“I went to see the family in Edmonton.” I told my buddy.
“You have family in Edmonton?” They inquired with a puzzled look slapped crooked on their face.
“That’s what I said.” I replied, “Imagine my surprise.”
And that is just what happened.

I spent a week away in Edmonton, far from my humble abode. They’re not really family, or at least never behaved like it. They are usually referred to as “the in-laws”. And most of you who are reading this are most likely either cringing or bouncing in your seat or whatever in the name of Gandhi you are sitting on. You will all utter the same word with that gut feeling of dread or joy, “the in-laws”. In fact, I suppose that is not what I am talking about. I take more to my mother’s side of the family; hence my father’s being the “in-laws”. They are a wretched bunch. But not to the untrained eye. They are the mouthiest, cruelest, without a doubt studies should be done on the lack of heart let alone civility from these people. They don’t condemn you. They give you a direct invitation to have a sit down with the dark lords’ minions over your choice of chicken or fish and one refreshment (which is almost always coffee) and then they discuss your condemnation with the presence of a likable “but never smiles” jury. It really is a fascinating process. Even so, I know loan-sharks that are more forgiving.

I had wondered what sin I had committed that was so bad I had to room with these people for a week. Was God punishing me? Or was this just some practical joke? I suppose at the end a little smile was cracked. I thought perhaps there had been a massacre in the family I was unaware of due to their unexpected show and tell of “pleasantness”. To even further the surprise, they invited me for Christmas. I wasn’t sure whether to assume fetal position, stop-drop-and-roll, or just start hyperventilating. If I can be Frank here, and you can still be Bob, I felt like they were playing some sort of sick joke.

Anyways, by the end of the week, I had seen that they had changed just a little. A little tweak had been done in their behavior, but that was all. They are still the in-laws, but now they serve goulash at the condemnation party which has been renamed “the act of contemplation, we serve cookies too”. It feels like some quirky Holmes and Watson case in the after hours when both are stoned out of their minds and have had a little too much opium while asking the same questions more than three times and switching the subject abruptly to “how do you like the cookies? They are home made. Now back to the subject. Um. How do you like the cookies? They are home made.”

You get my point. And this was the wildlife sighting of the month.
