I have installed Zonealarm and Avast Antivirus, They should be sufficient for my relatively low standards.
Now on to the last part of phase 2, get that backup up and going.

After a lot of googling, bugging lots of people at irc and some quiet pondering, I've come to the conclusion that a good bet would be to install the lightweight firewall "ZoneAlarm". I'm not sure how much better (if any) it is than Windows own builtin FW. But I would suspect that ZoneAlarm has more configurability, and therefore is a better choice.

I've also found a soultion for one of my backup problems, my bookmarks. I'm using both IE and Firefox, and so it has become a hassle to copy the bookmarks between the browsers, and there's also the dataloss factor. The solution is a Bookmark sync software called "BookmarkSync". With that I will set my bookmark folder to my external hd and sync to it with both browsers.

I have this crazy idea that I'm going to learn programming, but as I'm also quite interested in learning about computer security, I want the rest of my system to be reasonably secure first (Both from dataloss due to crashed hardware etc. and from malicious hackers that may find their way to my own little corner of the web).

This means my work will be done in two major phases.

1: Harden windows, and come up with a backup-solution for valuable data.

2:Decide on a language to learn. search the web for suitable documentation for learning how to program in said language.

I will update along the way...

PS. Comments and advice is always appreciated.
