trying to fix up an old Compaq Presario 5000

I have an old Compaq Presario 5000, which looks like this:
This computer is older than life itself, I know (according to Wikipedia, it was manufactured in 1998). This computer is not one of the computers in use in my household. The one I'm using is a Windows Vista Premium, and the other one is a Windows XP Professional. This computer is loaded with Windows ME (LOL).

This computer had problems turning on when we stopped using it (around 2004). We had to use Safe Mode to try to diagnose it.
However my little sister, who was in elementary school at the time, decided to put a password, "computer", for the Compaq system (NOT the Windows Operating system; the Copmpaq system before the computer even turns on). Unfortunately, SHE SPELLED IT WRONG so the computer has not been able to turn on since that day. >.<

The things that I would like to do to this computer are:

1) Format the hard drive
2) Install Linux
3) Use as a jukebox, possibly (since I'm the one fixing it up :P)

I would like to know how to go about doing this. I have no idea how to crack the password, so I can get to the operating system, and format the hard drive.

If any techies can do this, it would help a lot!

hey thought I could help with the problem you have. The bios (the area your sister pass worded) is powered by a small watch battery type thing, so you just need to pop the side off your case find the battery and pop it out (while the comp is not plugged in) for about a 45 second count. Should fix your problem.
