Spambots Flood Blog Hosting Website
Today we had about 150 to 200 accounts created on Aeonity all by a spambot. For those of you who do not know what a spambot is, perhaps we can clear that up for you.
quote:
Spambots is a program designed to collect e-mail addresses from the Internet in order to build mailing lists for sending unsolicited e-mail, also known as spam. A spambot is a type of web crawler, that can gather e-mail addresses from Web sites, newsgroups, special-interest group (SIG) postings, and chat-room conversations. Because e-mail addresses have a distinctive format, spambots are easy to write. - wikipedia
Well the spambot that was on Aeonity created nearly 200 accounts and spammed them with ads, redirects to other websites, and even codec installers (spyware). Luckily, Jim / FrosT created a mass remove that helped us take all these spambot created users off of Aeonity.
Whats crazy is that these spambots even created multiple entries, all the entries were redirected to a pornographic movie that required you to install a 'codec' to view. Note this codec is spyware.
Well, thats all the news for today. We will be taking extreme means on our registration / captchas to make sure another instance like this does not happen again.
