I need serious help!

With my template that is. I want to customize it like I see everybody else doing, but every time I try to edit the coding to make any serious changes, I get that stupid error page.

There has to be a simple basis for editing these templates because everybody is doing it except for me ..haha

Would greatly appreciate any help that you all could give me on this one.
