| Isn't it funny how things just sort of fade away? I was listening to the Smashing Pumpkins today and was taken aback by the fact that I rarely listen to them any more. I mean, when I was 14 my mother took Melon Collie from me because I had been listening to it continuously for something like eight weeks. Now? They're no big deal. But that sort of thing is alway happening, right now. And not only have the band faded from the music scene, but my memories of their songs, and the feelings they generated, have also faded. The CD sleeve has faded as well for that matter. So many things have happened that just aren't that important any more. All of history is now viewed from the outside, we'll never be there, no-one will be, again. At some point, no-one will even remember me, let alone my being partial to the odd vegetable named four-piece. They'll know I was there once, that great-great-uncle Stefan was a link in the chain, but it'll have no emotional resonance. It'll have faded. Unless I leave a huge inheritance, then I'll live FOREVER! There is no earth shattering revelation herein, just a thought I had. Damn Muzzle was a great song. |

| A lot of people like to insult Dungeons and Dragons, but I don't think many of them realise what the experience entails. Don't get me wrong, if I walked into a candlelit room full of people in crushed velvet cowls screaming "Thou hast foresaken mine maiden troll, now havest atst thee!" I'd be running for the hills with the rest of you. But it doesn't have to be that way. Ignoring the obvious fantasy elements for a second, D&D is much like writing a blog. It's about storytelling. Creating something and then sharing it with others. Now I'll admit that I find magical cults and mystical swordfights appealling (alongside other crazy crap like transforming robots, Jedi Knights and Paris Hilton), but that's not really what the whole thing's about. Like many forms of (...pretentiousness rising....) art, you create something, and feel great in the process, and that feeling only increases when you start sharing it with other people. Also, I'm a nerd of Herculian proportions. |
