| A lot of people like to insult Dungeons and Dragons, but I don't think many of them realise what the experience entails. Don't get me wrong, if I walked into a candlelit room full of people in crushed velvet cowls screaming "Thou hast foresaken mine maiden troll, now havest atst thee!" I'd be running for the hills with the rest of you. But it doesn't have to be that way. Ignoring the obvious fantasy elements for a second, D&D is much like writing a blog. It's about storytelling. Creating something and then sharing it with others. Now I'll admit that I find magical cults and mystical swordfights appealling (alongside other crazy crap like transforming robots, Jedi Knights and Paris Hilton), but that's not really what the whole thing's about. Like many forms of (...pretentiousness rising....) art, you create something, and feel great in the process, and that feeling only increases when you start sharing it with other people. Also, I'm a nerd of Herculian proportions. |
