Sometimes it is difficult to hear the “s” on the end of a word, but you can still tell if it is a singular or plural by paying attention to if there is an article such as (a, an) in front of the word. If there is such an article in front of the word, it is singular e.g. a book. If not, it is plural e.g. the books or some books. Also pay attention to the verb form. This can change when you go from singular to plural e.g. the book is on the table; the books are on the table.

A. Remember to pay attention to what I say about certain questions before I play the tape. I have gone through these tasks beforehand and I know what the trick questions are. These are questions that require you to think a little longer about the answer. Sometimes the obvious answer is, in fact, incorrect; and the less-obvious answer is the correct one. I suggest you mark off in your book those questions which I tell to you to pay attention to. Then when you go to answer them, you will take extra time to think and improve your chances of choosing the correct answer.

Social customs and ways of behaving change. But they do not necessarily always change for the better. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite behavior for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make a fool of himself by smoking when a lady was in the room. The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable; especially if they are your guests.
