For all of you guys that have had no luck installing your Creative Soundblaster Live 5.1 Driver on Windows Vista, here is a resolution that works!
After I installed Windows Vista I noticed that windows update did not support my Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 so I decided to look for an alternative driver. I tried the following programs that did NOT work.
SBL51_W9xME.exe - This download is a standalone package of Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 software meant for existing 5.1 card users who have lost their installation CD. It also includes the following Creative Audio software suite
ngocmd.exe - This applies to all Live! products, including OEM Dell, Gateway, HP, etc. editions, 24-bit, 5.1, and the rest. Vista 5308 may or may not find drivers on Windows Update, but even if it does, they will not support Digital Audio.
So I went straight to my manufacture...Dell. I begain looking for my computer type, then by its model. I noticed that a old driver was avaliable.
Direct Download from Dell Servers
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Digital
(Note - You do not need a Dell to download this Driver, its from Creative)
So I downloaded it - Right Clicked on it > Properties > Windows XP Compatibility > Apply > Ok. Then I double clicked and installed.
Luckly, after 2 hours of searching I found a resolution to my audio problems window Sound Blaster Live 5.1 for Windows Vista. All of you that have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2, this should also work for you.
Direct Download from Dell Servers
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2

Be sure to follow the directions strictly as they are written in blue...it's not hard
Here's a mirror of the file you have to extract:
SBXF_PCDVT_LB_2_13_0012.exe
And this WORKS FOR EVERYONE that has a Sound Blaster 5.1 Digital on Vista

My recommendation would be to uninstall any audio drivers that may already be present from a past installation. Then proceed with the steps listed above. |
anonymous - May 14th, 2007
hi David,
Thanks for the response. On my first attempt, there was no drivers loaded. The card appeared in Device Manager with a yellow ! |
 |
david - May 14th, 2007
Ok try this, unless you already figured it out. Go to the device manager and uninstall any present drivers. Once that is complete, give the PC a reboot. One that is done make sure that you are installing the correct sound card driver. I've been through many installations of different sound cards in the past, and not all sound blasters are the same. Once that is done proceed. If possible, give me a full name of your soundcard. |
anonymous - May 15th, 2007
Hi dude! Thanx but it's not working for me. I downlaoded this exe file and ran it in Win XP compatibility mode. The files are extracted and the setup program starts. But then without showing the wizard it says that a Creative sound blaster 5.1 was not found on my system. Anything i can do for this, please? Thanx a lot!!!! |
anonymous - May 15th, 2007
hello from Portugal, I got the same message went for the ngocmd.exe witch i had already installed without sucess so i ran it again and now its working fine. make shure the plug & play OS is set to yes in your bios.

ok so this is what i did:
first i went to device manager and under other devices i uninstalled the "multimidea audio device". it didnt even recognize it as a sblive at this point. then i downloaded Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Digital driver and put it on xp compatability. then i installed. nothing happened though. i didnt get any errors. it never really asked me anything. it just extracted and then installed but my card still isnt recognized. |
anonymous - May 21st, 2007
Does THis Work With x64-bit version of Windows Vista!!!!!!!!!???????? |
 |
david - May 21st, 2007
Give it a try and tell us. |
anonymous - June 01st, 2007
Okey, this is what I've done lately, but the problem still persists and this seems to be getting out-of-hand,and Microsoft & Creative should really spend a huge time & effort for fixing this huge problem. What I did was install a fresh copy of Vista Ultimate on my PC.After installing I've noticed immediately that my PC has no sound whatsoever, after investigating a bit in device manager (Which showed my sound device having that yellow thing.),and attempting to install my Sound Blaster Live! driver from the original cd (Which would not recognise the driver.).I have aslo tried you're suggestion of installing the driver posted in you're blog and putting it in XP mode compatible, but the problem still persists saying: "Setup could not detect any sound blaster audio card in your system."Any posts concerning this problem is a BIG thanks..

david - June 01st, 2007
Be sure to uninstall any existing driver that may have been installed prior, once that is done it should work. |
anonymous - June 02nd, 2007
Hi!
David, great work that you are at least making the effort. Unfortunately I have the same problem that it mentions a Soundblaster sound card could not be found.
How can I determine the exact make and model of my card? I'm pretty sure it's a Live 5.1, but I'm afraid I'll have to pull it out of the machine first.
I've also tried extracting the files to a folder and by installing the new drivers navigate to that folder. Didn't work either.
When I did that while internet drivers (by MS I presume) where installed through "Update drivers" and then navigated to the unpacked information it mentioned that the drivers installed where up to date. (However the sound was still crap.)
Any other ideas? Thanks! |
anonymous - June 05th, 2007
Are you able to get 5.1 surround working?
I'm using the KXproject drivers and after messing around for about an hour they're working okay.

Hi, nice post. I'm having no luck getting Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 512V to work, any help would be apreciated. |
anonymous - June 08th, 2007
Thanks for the tip at the top. I tried the steps that you outlined. Found that I had to do two more things for the driver to finally get installed:
1) I made sure to uninstall the audio entry in Device Manager before installing the CD Driver
2) I made sure that I went to the Dell/Drivers/R69382 folder and made sure that the file SBLA05W.exe was set to run in XP compatibility mode.
Thanks again. |
anonymous - June 10th, 2007
"setup was unable to detect and sound blaster card installed on your system"

anonymous - June 12th, 2007
this very wierd, the only positive remarks are at the beginning and at the end....i have tried unistalling multimedia audio from device manager before, plug and play OS from bios on, compatibility mode XP SP2 Yadda ok....forget that
here is the solution:
forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=14650#M14650

anonymous - November 10th, 2007
If you get the "unable to detect" error message, here's the fix (this has been a known fix for years - even for Windows XP):
Install a program like WINRAR so you can right-click the downloaded .EXE and extract it to a folder. In the folder is another compressed folder called DRIVERS - extract that one too. Inside THAT folder is a program called "CTZAPXX". Run it - it will ask if you want to install the drivers (gee, you think we do after all this?). Once you accept the install, it will ask for a reboot. You should already have sound as it plays the Windows shut-down sound as it reboots. This has always worked for me on all machines! |
anonymous - November 22nd, 2007
hey david
Could you confirm that SB 5.1 Live works fine with the Vista Update
thanks |
 |
david - November 22nd, 2007
I am unable to confirm anonymous November 22nd, but I am pretty sure it will indeed work. Keep in mind that this is simply a driver, and honestly...its not a really 'a good one'....but all and all it works. Can anyone please verify? |
anonymous - November 24th, 2007
Hey david
i have changed to Windows Vista Ultimate now, and it has updated the C 5.1 SB Live Drivers.......now the thing is that: IT WORKS WELL.....but only 3 of my speakers work(Left Right and Subwoofer).....Otherwise if i click: Sounds ==> Playback ===> Configure(5.1) and Test Each Speaker WORKS Fine!!!!......but otherwise only 3 work......i have searched like hell passed few days....and i found this:
=======
forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=26559
=======
The only problem is that the two files i need to activate surround sound are on rapidshare....which does not work in my country.
If any of you could find the same 2 files in the link please let me know.
The files:
Sound Blaster Live series 4.1 - 5.1 vista 32/64 driver
rapidshare.com/files/64356124/SBAX_2_12_0001_20.zip
Creative audio console - Install this to surround sound work ¡
Creative audio console Version 1.20.57 (preferably use this version)
rapidshare.com/files/65598530/AudCon.zip
Thankyou

YOU CAN READ ALL INSTRUCTION AND PROBLEM SOLUTION ON MY ORIGINAL POST HERE:

If you hear distortion sound, change speakers to 4 or 5.1
Sounds in Windows Vista enviroment (music, mouse sounds, theme sounds, etc.) have only two channel, this is windows vista problem not hardware sound problem, multichannel sounds work only in OpenAL games how "Bioshock", "Prey" or DVD 5.1 surround sound movies.
Note: For multichannel sounds in windows vista environment, you have to enable Speaker Fill option in control panel - sound enhancements setting in my naimadekar driver mod.
I test multichannel 4 and 5.1 sounds successfully in Bioshock, prey, crysis and Virtua tennis 3 games!
You can try too, other driver how Daniel_k mod this work great and have support of CMSS and Stereo Surround too! Here:

anonymous - June 14th, 2008
It said there is no such sound card on my system?! |
anonymous - June 14th, 2008
i tried many solutions here.. nuthing works Oo
this modded driver works like the rest: front-left/right works. subwoofer does as long as the front-boxes do.
rear and center says nothing.
in windows-driver i have 5.1 in this creative-optimize-thingy i had to choose between 2.1, 4.1 and headphones..
all with the same effect.
same happens with x-fi driver.
bullshit -.-
i'll try to force xpdriver again and if this wont work i'll use kx driver again (which for some reason stopped working yesterday o,o i had sound just to the point where kx loaded after each reboot) |
anonymous - June 15th, 2008

If you get distortion after installation ann you have to do is go to playback devices select Creative SB Live! Speakers Click on 5.1 Souround then next uncheck all unavailable speaker such as center, subwoofer & rear Pair, click next, select only front left and right click next then finish |
