Entry explains my knowledge of the Donkey Lady Bridge in San Antonio Texas located off of South Applewhite Road.

Update: 08.31.08
I received an email from a visitor today so I decided to post it.

quote:
Thanks for posting the information on the Donkey Lady Bridge. I went out there and took some videos and pictures.

The video can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0kYa5VKCKU

I'm new to San Antonio but came across some stories on the internet regarding haunted places. I read your page and headed out there one lazy weekend.

Thanks again.

So as the story goes, long ago there was a Chinese Woman who lived alone in her home in South San Antonio Texas around the Applewhite Road facinity. If that doesnt strike you as being odd from long ago try this. The Chinese woman was 6.5 nearly 7 feet tall.

The people in the community in South San Antonio at the time felt threatened by this lonely introverted woman, that they devised many plans to be rid of her. After trial and fail, a few of the near by residents decided to burn down her home. One cold night in early November this was finally done. The home burned but what people didnt know is that the lonely Chinese woman was asleep inside. Some say that she ran our flesh torn, burned, and cindering.

Some say that the Chinese woman in South San Antonio died that cold November evening, but some say the survived the fire.

Why is she called the Donkey Lady?
Well first off as she was running outside of the home on fire she fell on both of her hands which broke immediately broken. All her hair fell out, and her warped face now hung low perceiving an donkey / horse like creature.

What is the Donkey Lady Bridge?
The Donkey Lady Bridge is located on the South side of San Antonio. It is a very small, odd looking bridge that very out of place. The bridge is one way, so on coming traffic must stop and let others go by before preceding. At night the bridge is highly dangerous, due to the woods, darkness, and creek bed below.

It is said that the Donkey Lady roams this bridge on all fours, with the sounds of her bones going click, clack, click, clack, on the pavement of the street and bridge.

Not many have been to the bridge, but a lot of people have heard there version of the Donkey Lady Story. This was mine, if I think of anything else I will be sure to add more.

Directions to The Donkey Lady Bridge
The bridge is located at the corner of Applewhite Rd. and W. Jett Rd. I have added a link to Google Maps that will give you a visual of where this is located in San Antonio.

Thank you to the other David Polanco (Alienanchovies) for the ride and the efforts to take these pictures even after the flood. As you can see in the pictures above, the Donkey Lady Bridge is flooded. So much so we were not able to take pictures of the bridge on this day.

I always thought that there were two differing stories. One is of the Chinese graveyard, where a 7 foot tall Chinese woman killed the people who ridiculed her. And then a story of an unfortunate half woman/half donkey who roamed that bridge. When I was younger, there was a phone number that we would call, and it would be hooves clacking and someone braying like a donkey. It only fed fuel to that tale. I enjoyed your entries!

the way i heard it was the woman had a pet donkey who she loved very much and she was tryin to save the donkey from the fire and she got melted to it. so she is half donkey half woman hence the name "donkey lady". where did the chinese part come in? i never heard that before.

We've been out to the DOnkey Lady Bridge plenty of times before. We've had some crazy ass experiences in the woods and on the bridge at night. This was all before Toyota came about though. We were out there maybe two weeks ago and saw some crazy stuff.
The Chinese Graveyard is located on Zarzamora street on the way out to the Donkey lady Bridge. The original name of the cemetary is the reason why they call it the Chinese Graveyard. Cant think of it for the life of me but yeah. A friend of mine has a picture of a gremlin that was there. I say was because the damn thing followed me home. I know, it sounds funny and fake, but believe you me, it's not. There is a cemetary by the DLB, in the woods though. A friend of mine has been there a few times. We used to meet up with this sheriff many years ago when I was in high school and he woulld tell us about all the dead bodies they've found and that the Mafia has thrwn out there. Pretty cool place though.
Well if theres any other way that I can be of assistance get at me at jro2783@yahoo.com or myspace.com/jro2783
    Happy Hauntings...

4 years ago my best friend and i heard the story of donkey lady bridge through his sister. So we decided to check it out for ourselves. We decided to take a video camera, digital camera, walki talki's, and 2 other friends along with us. Once we crossed the first bridge on applewhite road we all got the odd feeling that we shouldn't be there. Some call it nerves, but for me it was something more. We pulled onto the bridge, turned the lights off, and yelled "donkey lady" 3 times. ( what his sister told us to do) Within seconds we heard what sounding like hooves running through he water and then dead silence. It was pitch black so we all coudn't see very well, but we heard a loud thud against the the back of my car. I threw the lights on and kicked the car in reverse to get off the bridge and stoped on the curve that is about 50 feet infront of the bridge. Then there on the side of the road we saw litterally a donkey figure glaring at us. I reversed again and turned around and speed the hell outta there. Never have i ever been back to the bridge and still get chills when i think about that night. We had the whole thing on tape where you can hear the loud thud hitting the outside of my car, to seeing two beady eyes from the side of the bridge. I am a firm believer that something not natural is out there.

I didn't believe this story. I always thought that it was someone on some good stuff.. we went a little over a week ago. gives me chills just thinking about it.
we were going up and down the street honking because the bridge entrance has been closed off. Two sets of red eyes popped out of no where. and we saw two dogs. my mom said theres a name for them but its in spanish and my brother refers to them as the "hounds of hell"
after that, the windows fogged up to the point where we couldnt see anything. we had the wipers on because it was getting fogged from the outside.. then it looked like someone was standing in front of the car and threw a huge rock at the car.
we wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, but actually came back up the street to find we had gotten a flat. the tire was completely ripped apart.
we found some ppl sitting over the bridge entrance and they were telling us that at exactly midnight you hear rustling noise and foot steps and ppl yelling.
I swear, I kept hearing like a car trying to turn on, like the sound of a starter.. and then we heard foot steps right behind us like coming to us.
we hopped into the car and took off..
i have it all recorded on video if you think im BSing you:|

ahh yes i remember the donkey lady !!! i was more scared of the weeping woman or la yorona ( hope i spelled it roght) but yeah the whole storie of the chinese graveyard from what i heard was the graveyard itself had a burial ground containing chinese immigrants moving to the U S. supossitly their plane crash near the area and of course all passengers passed in a burning wreckage ,none of the victims had identifications on them so basically there in unmarked graves hidden in the cemetery. when you enter the cemetary park in the middle ( NOTE THE CEMETERY ITSELF IS ONLY A BLOCK BIG) turn you car off and flick your lights three times 9 of course shut your lights off they you can see the the sprits walking throught the garveyard but yeah last itme i went there was a big iron fence shut ... and a sign which read " ALL TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT" and " NO SATANIC RITUALS ALLOWED" i guess its a case of
" never mind the ghosts beware of owner" but yeah HEH !

I haven't tried this number in a very, very long time: 225-LADY. I swear that it used to work (i.e. the sound of hooves clopping, then a braying moan. Ahhh, the memories).

    anonymous Says:
    October 26th, 2007

that 225-LADY number used to be on in the 80's. there was that one and another for the Llorona. I know this, because i used to call them both from my grandma's house. of course my older sister would threaten me when i didn't want to change the tv channel from cartoons to whatever she wanted to watch, she would say she was going to call the donkey lady to come get me....
but they were definitely working number. the Donkey Lady number did 1 of 2 things, it was either the clack clack clack of hooves or it would be donkey noises. the Llorona would be someone crying, but not like a boo-hoo cry, it was a mono tone dull wailing type of cry. it was freaky! when we used to call them, it was when we used to live with my grandma, so that was probably about 1982, 1983. we only lived with her for a year or so. after that, i don't remember calling anymore....

as we were walking back down the dirt path there was another direction to go left so we went left and about 45 seconds going in that path we smelled something horrible : like dead but a strong dead smell..so we kept walking and as we were walking we looked down and saw 3 huge blood splats that looked kinda fresh..OMG haha one of my friends said DONT RUN...DONT PANIC!ha and what did we do FUC*ING RAN LOL and as we were running
it was like that smell was following us..idk it was some scary shit.......YOU GOTTA GO!

I don't believe any of you. It's funny how you all have seen something or called and heard something, yet none of you have any proof. No one can remember the numbers and the ones they claim to remember, don't work. And someone posted about a video, yet they never showed it to anybody. You would think if someone had proof of something like that, they would want everyone to see it. Very suspicious to me.

Go to YouTube and search for "Donkey Lady Bridge kotsu777" and it's listed as "The Donkey Lady Bridge of San Antonio". You can't miss it. The bridge is closed off by a guardrail but is plainly visible from the main road off Old Applewhite Road.

I've been there a few times, but only driving by it. Always wanted to get off and walk around. I have been to the Chinese gravyard. Went there a few years ago. We parked and walked around. You diffenetly get the eerie vibe. The people is was with were scared so we left. But on our way out some people in black robes started running after our car. And yes this really happened, doesn't really mean it's haunted but it does give reason has to why that sign is up about rituals. I guess some people used to out there and conduct rituals of some sort.

I have been there a couple times. There is also something similar in helotes. My mother told me about that one... wouldn't recommend it from what I heard she carries an old style shotgun. anyway I remember from my youth the donkey lady number was 210-225-LADY. don't know if it works anymore but it used to be pretty scary at least to a 5 yr old in 1989.

I've heard stories of the D.L. myself. May i add, that i actually know of a person still living (barely), who has had contact with her. The family will not tell his story out of embarrassment. But here goes. One night while playing pool at a nearby Applewhite bar, a patron came in wearing a hooded coat. Upon further inspection, they noticed a donkeys tail hangin down from inside the coat on this person. Immediately, the patrons yelled in spanish, el diablo and started chasing this patron around the bar and out the back door. The mysterious patron made a hoofing sound as it galloped out and into the darkness. I keep teasing this old man about his story, but he just looks back in awe that no one believes him. He has a sound mind, and has never done anything outside the law, and a solid family man. He is not known for telling lies, but this one is too much. Why he continues to tell it is unknown, unless it carries some weight.

3-13-09, my friends and I tried to find the Donkey Lady bridge, but becuase we didn't turn off of Apple White onto OLD Apple White (we were coming from the North) we missed the bridge. All I could figure was that it was torn down and Toyota had built a 4 laner bridge there insted. However , thanks to your google maps link, and your mention of W. Jett, we figured it out. Goole map's satalie image is old, so the NEW apple white isn't on it, but the road is digitally marked in. WE'll have to go out again and try to find the Real bridge- which is most likely closed.
In the end we kept going down Apple white until it turned in to a dirt road which we KEPT going down. That road was pretty scary at night. Some friends of friends who were following us in thier car called us and swore up and down that they saw a woman in the woods there off that dirt road...we don't know if they were messing with us though. the road eventually ended at a gate marked as some ranch. WAY, WAY south of where Jett is.

Also we've read different variations of stories. Never heard about her being Chinese. There's some interesting tetimonials in the "Wierd Texas" book.

Hi David, my name is Jennifer. You linked to my old Haunted San Antonio site on your Midget Mansion page.
I would like to clairfy a couple of things on your original posting of the Donkey Lady. She and the 7 foot tall chinese woman are not one in the same.

The ghost of the seven foot tall Chinese woman is said to wander through Mission Park Cemetary on Military Drive. She is a tourmented soul who took her own life because she could not bear the constant teasing regarding her height. Her punishment for her suicide is to wander the cemetary. An interesting note to this story is that there is indeed a section of the Mission Park Cemetary that only has Chinese people buried in it.

The Donkey Lady is the ghost of a woman who drowned her children in a creek, in the hopes that her lover would not leave her. The punishment for her sins is to wander the creek where she killed her children with the head of a donkey and the body of a beautiful woman.
I remember calling her "number" in the late '80s. All you heard was the sound of a horse running. The number probably doesn't work because the area code in San Antonio at the time was 512.

Oh gawd, I've heard of the Donkey Lady Bridge...I've been to it too. Mind if I tell my story?

Back when I was 11 years old, I went on vacation with my dad, mom, and neighbors. We stumbled across a website that told about the Donkey Lady. Once we knew where the bridge was located, we noticed that we lived right by it, lol. So me, my dad, and my two neighbors went to the bridge to investigate. It was me and my one neighbor who snuck out of the car to go on the bridge. Surprisingly, my dad didnt mind, but he gave us pocket knifes (and no flashlight -_-). My neighbor started running across the bridge. She stopped right in the middle of it, staring into the creek. I snuck up behind her and yelled "HEEEE HAAAWWWW" (believe it or not, it sounded pretty realistic too). Then, the unbelievable happened, she ALMOST fell into the creek, but I grabbed her legs before she could fully reach the water. When I pulled her up, she started running off of the bridge, terrified. She stopped at the end of the bridge and ran back to me. I appologized to her, but she said that she didnt care about that. What she really was scared about was the fact that when she was falling, she saw a hideous face in the water, that was possibly the Donkey Lady. She sounded serious too. Then we heard my other neighbor yell "HOLY CRAP!". We ran back to the car and saw tiny dents in the car. My dad said that the car was bombarded by rocks. We drove back to the hotel as fast as we could, but my friend caught a glimpse of a pair of eyes in the bushes.

So that is my story, its true, all of it. I couldnt sleep for days on end (also considering the fact that I was 11). So yeah, enjoy!

ok, I've been trying to find the donkey lady bridge for quite some time but I can't seem to find it. I went there once when i was lke 8 and I didn't pay attention to any landmarks that were around the bridge at the time. Any way, I know they built a new bridge over where the Donkey lady bridge was located (by Toyota factory). Is the bridge located under the big new one (over Medina lake river?) let me know please. I always see the google maps that have a pin point o Applewhite rd and W. jett road but none of those lead me to the bridge. please help me out guys.

I lived in SA as a kid (13-18 y.o.) and heard many of the local ghost stories (La Llorona, Insane Asylum, and the Haunted Railroad Tracks), but only heard the full versions of the "Donkey Lady" legend recently. In 1993 or 1994 (I was about 13), a neighbor friend of ours told my sis and I that if you lock yourself in a dark closet, and chant “Donkey Lady, I have your son” three times, she will appear and claw and stomp you to death! It didn’t work obviously. But I can’t help thinking that our neighbor was mixing up the Donkey Lady with La Llorona. I guess its an “urban legend” spin on the Donkey Lady, not unlike the “Bloody Mary” chant. But its interesting how La Llorona and Donkey Lady are both women, associated with a creek and bridge, who died tragic deaths, supposedly in the San Antonio area. I wonder if “Donkey Lady” is just a newer, different spin on the La Llorona tale? What do y’all think?
Also, I wonder if someone could find a newspaper mention of this lady’s death, it seems to have happened in the 1900s.

On the Google map, look at the "satellite" image and you will see the creek running east-to-west just north of Jett Road. The bridge is over that creek.

    “Donkey Lady” House found?
Look at the Google map (in “satellite” view) of the Donkey Lady Bridge (just north of the intersection of Applewhite and West Jett Road). Not to be confused with the larger, newer Applewhite Road and bridge further east that goes past the Toyota plant. The Donkey Lady Bridge is a narrow bridge crossing the Medina River, and sits right at the eastern border of the “Medina River Natural Area” (park). I found something interesting: look at the Google map, start at Applewhite Road and follow W. Jett Road west for about 1800 feet (600 yards). There is a large newer house on the left-hand (south) side of the road (address: 2662 W Jett Rd)—but across the street, on the right-hand (north) side is an old broken-down wooden house with a trashed yard. Looks abandoned, like it may have burned, and that people seem to have been dumping trash there for years. The old house backs up toward the Medina River, and from the satellite map it looks like livestock may once have been kept in the yard near the house. Could this have been the Donkey Lady’s house??? It’s only 600 yards from the bridge. I looked at the satellite map for other abandoned-looking houses in this area, but could not identify any. And this house is so close to the Donkey Lady bridge! We know the house is in the 2600 block of W. Jett Rd., perhaps we can search old S.A. news articles for house fires here? Maybe an old San Antonio City Directory (1930-1970) to find out who lived there? If so we may be able to link Donkey Lady with a real person and event!!!
Let me know your comments, what you think, and what you find out!

Oh wait…looks like the house found on the Google map was recently under construction when it burned…I guess this explains all the debris piles around the house…false alarm L…

    San Antonio Express-News
    2/4/2007

“Local lawyer Philip Ross' three-story dream house was damaged Saturday in a fire likely sparked by a barbeque pit left smoldering on a back deck, fire officials said.
Ross was not home at the time of the blaze, which injured no one.
Ross had been constructing the metal-framed home himself along the banks of the Medina River on West Jett Road in an area recently annexed from South Bexar County.
An aspiring sculptor and former foe of the abandoned Applewhite reservoir, Ross also had been accumulating vast amounts of scrap metal on the property.
A structural engineer on Saturday was determining the integrity of the edifice, which towers 70 feet tall and includes pulleys, bridges and two metal sculptures of cyclists topping a crow's nest at its peak.”

Hmm, I am seeing one small, old abandoned-looking wooden house on the Google sat map, just west of the burned metal house. It is alone in a field close to the banks of the Medina River.

The "Chinese" connection in this story is very interesting, and may explain Donkey Lady's origin. In 1916, there were only about 50 Chinese people known to be living in San Antonio--most of them on the west side. But in 1917, US Army General "Black Jack" Pershing returned to Texas from fighting the Mexican Revolution, taking 427 displaced Chinese workers with him. The "Pershing Chinese", as they were called, were used to build Camp Travis in south San Antonio between 1917 and 1922. This explains the Chinese cemetery on Zarzamora, and the Chinese burial section at Mission Park. If "Donkey Lady" was Chinese, she was probably the wife or daughter of one of these original workers (most of whom lived in south San Antonio).

    anonymous Says:
    May 04th, 2011

The Chinese cemetery off zarzamora has nothing but Hispanic names. I used to go to all those sites years ago. You get off on 35 south on zarzamora and take a left ( right passed south park mall.) you go down a ways and on the right side of the road there is a small cemetery gate opening. The cemetery off of Fischer road futher south is more tripped out. There's some old graces in there. That ones a little harder to explain how to get to. It's left passed the truckstop then you have to go down various unmarked roads. The donkey lady number was 221-lady and it hasn't worked for years. The llorona and donkey lady are to totally different creatures . Y'all gotta know about the lachusa also. I stayed at the metzger hotel next to the Alamo on Christmas eve and that was a trip walking around at night. I grew up I'm sa during the 80s and 90s but have been in Waco for 8 years so I know about all those legends. Any questions my email is robtmmartinez77@gmail.com

Cool site! Too bad there isn't a way to weed out the drunks, druggies and children who've decided to post here, but you can tell who's got their sh*t together and who doesn't.
I've been to DLB and have never seen nor heard anything resembling a donkey. Have I experienced anything paranormal out there? Bet your ass I have.
Have I had park police ask what I'm doing out there and/or ask me to leave? You betcha! I haven't seen anyone post anything about legal consequences that may be imposed (depending on the officer's mood) once it's been discovered you're trespassing on private property. I know of a friend that got arrested out there one night for having outstanding warrants; everybody else got tickets. And make no mistake about this: there are feral and Javalina hogs in those woods. If you piss one off and it charges you're gonna wish for a ticket!
My paranormal experiences include an extremely loud bang upon the guardrail, a very loud moaning or groaning or growling sound emanating from the woods and phantom footsteps approaching me from behind. My experiences took place between January and February of last year between the hours of 12 am and 4 am. Most of the experiences occured on the road next to where the small parking lot is for park visitors or the parking lot itself. No one has mentioned either that DLB is located within the Salado Park Greenway.
DLB is located where W. Jett Rd and OLD Applewhite Rd intersect; not Applewhite Rd itself. Google maps does not label Old Applewhite Rd, but rather as Applewhite Rd which can be confusing so my suggestion is to just type W. Jett Rd and then follow it (on Google maps) to where it intersects (Old) Applewhite Rd. Hope this helps and gives ya a little more info.

After many times visiting The Donkey Lady bridge and not seeing, hearing anything i thought the many tales of The Donkey Lady and other people's story's were all bs! sorry lol. I thought everything was fake. On April 19, 2013 a friday night around 10:20 pm my boyfriend was talking about the bridge and i was telling him how fake it is and of course he disagreed and decided he wants to visit the place so i was like whatever and i was so sure nothing was going to happen. So we get there he parks the car we get off and start walking to the bridge seconds later after stepping foot on that bridge what we heard i will never forget, we heard some sort of hooves coming towards us from the other end of the bridge then it stopped then it continued again so not even thinking i just ran off to the car scared and left my boyfriend behind walking lol mybad! OH MY GOD i was so scared lol!!!! then we sat in the car for a while and we heard someting crying. (im not sure what it was it was some sort of animal cries but honestly i can say i never heard anything like it) Has anybody heard any crying there??? then a cop showed up so we had to leave lol becareful people. but yeah i believe it now. creepy stuff man! -dest

One of the most chilling nights I have aver encountered! I went there with my 3 sisters and two brother in laws. When we got there around 1 am it was obviously closed but we decided to go anyways. So we told the girls to stay in the car while we walk the whole street and bridge. As we're halfway through the bridge we all look at each other because it got so cold we could actually see out breaths in the air. We just kept on walking and we felt as if we were being followed by this mysterious shadow like figure. Then we start hearing quiet whisper. But it definitely didn't sound American. It was more of a Male Chinese accent. We had also brought a phone so we could record or pick up any audio. As we were in the car we decided to play it through the car speakers. And we could hear a male Chinese accent saying "why have you come here". As we let it play we hear it say "the SMALL one"!! It must have been talking about my sister son that is still a baby. We all sat in shock because of what we were hearing through the recited audio. There might not be a donkey lady but I know that there is defitely something paranormal or supernatural out there!!!!
