Entry explains my knowledge of the Donkey Lady Bridge in San Antonio Texas located off of South Applewhite Road.

Update: 08.31.08
I received an email from a visitor today so I decided to post it.

Thanks for posting the information on the Donkey Lady Bridge. I went out there and took some videos and pictures.

The video can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0kYa5VKCKU

I'm new to San Antonio but came across some stories on the internet regarding haunted places. I read your page and headed out there one lazy weekend.

Thanks again.

So as the story goes, long ago there was a Chinese Woman who lived alone in her home in South San Antonio Texas around the Applewhite Road facinity. If that doesnt strike you as being odd from long ago try this. The Chinese woman was 6.5 nearly 7 feet tall.

The people in the community in South San Antonio at the time felt threatened by this lonely introverted woman, that they devised many plans to be rid of her. After trial and fail, a few of the near by residents decided to burn down her home. One cold night in early November this was finally done. The home burned but what people didnt know is that the lonely Chinese woman was asleep inside. Some say that she ran our flesh torn, burned, and cindering.

Some say that the Chinese woman in South San Antonio died that cold November evening, but some say the survived the fire.

Why is she called the Donkey Lady?
Well first off as she was running outside of the home on fire she fell on both of her hands which broke immediately broken. All her hair fell out, and her warped face now hung low perceiving an donkey / horse like creature.

What is the Donkey Lady Bridge?
The Donkey Lady Bridge is located on the South side of San Antonio. It is a very small, odd looking bridge that very out of place. The bridge is one way, so on coming traffic must stop and let others go by before preceding. At night the bridge is highly dangerous, due to the woods, darkness, and creek bed below.

It is said that the Donkey Lady roams this bridge on all fours, with the sounds of her bones going click, clack, click, clack, on the pavement of the street and bridge.

Not many have been to the bridge, but a lot of people have heard there version of the Donkey Lady Story. This was mine, if I think of anything else I will be sure to add more.

Directions to The Donkey Lady Bridge
The bridge is located at the corner of Applewhite Rd. and W. Jett Rd. I have added a link to Google Maps that will give you a visual of where this is located in San Antonio.

Thank you to the other David Polanco (Alienanchovies) for the ride and the efforts to take these pictures even after the flood. As you can see in the pictures above, the Donkey Lady Bridge is flooded. So much so we were not able to take pictures of the bridge on this day.

I always thought that there were two differing stories. One is of the Chinese graveyard, where a 7 foot tall Chinese woman killed the people who ridiculed her. And then a story of an unfortunate half woman/half donkey who roamed that bridge. When I was younger, there was a phone number that we would call, and it would be hooves clacking and someone braying like a donkey. It only fed fuel to that tale. I enjoyed your entries!

the way i heard it was the woman had a pet donkey who she loved very much and she was tryin to save the donkey from the fire and she got melted to it. so she is half donkey half woman hence the name "donkey lady". where did the chinese part come in? i never heard that before.

We've been out to the DOnkey Lady Bridge plenty of times before. We've had some crazy ass experiences in the woods and on the bridge at night. This was all before Toyota came about though. We were out there maybe two weeks ago and saw some crazy stuff.
The Chinese Graveyard is located on Zarzamora street on the way out to the Donkey lady Bridge. The original name of the cemetary is the reason why they call it the Chinese Graveyard. Cant think of it for the life of me but yeah. A friend of mine has a picture of a gremlin that was there. I say was because the damn thing followed me home. I know, it sounds funny and fake, but believe you me, it's not. There is a cemetary by the DLB, in the woods though. A friend of mine has been there a few times. We used to meet up with this sheriff many years ago when I was in high school and he woulld tell us about all the dead bodies they've found and that the Mafia has thrwn out there. Pretty cool place though.
Well if theres any other way that I can be of assistance get at me at jro2783@yahoo.com or myspace.com/jro2783

4 years ago my best friend and i heard the story of donkey lady bridge through his sister. So we decided to check it out for ourselves. We decided to take a video camera, digital camera, walki talki's, and 2 other friends along with us. Once we crossed the first bridge on applewhite road we all got the odd feeling that we shouldn't be there. Some call it nerves, but for me it was something more. We pulled onto the bridge, turned the lights off, and yelled "donkey lady" 3 times. ( what his sister told us to do) Within seconds we heard what sounding like hooves running through he water and then dead silence. It was pitch black so we all coudn't see very well, but we heard a loud thud against the the back of my car. I threw the lights on and kicked the car in reverse to get off the bridge and stoped on the curve that is about 50 feet infront of the bridge. Then there on the side of the road we saw litterally a donkey figure glaring at us. I reversed again and turned around and speed the hell outta there. Never have i ever been back to the bridge and still get chills when i think about that night. We had the whole thing on tape where you can hear the loud thud hitting the outside of my car, to seeing two beady eyes from the side of the bridge. I am a firm believer that something not natural is out there.

I didn't believe this story. I always thought that it was someone on some good stuff.. we went a little over a week ago. gives me chills just thinking about it.
we were going up and down the street honking because the bridge entrance has been closed off. Two sets of red eyes popped out of no where. and we saw two dogs. my mom said theres a name for them but its in spanish and my brother refers to them as the "hounds of hell"
after that, the windows fogged up to the point where we couldnt see anything. we had the wipers on because it was getting fogged from the outside.. then it looked like someone was standing in front of the car and threw a huge rock at the car.
we wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, but actually came back up the street to find we had gotten a flat. the tire was completely ripped apart.
we found some ppl sitting over the bridge entrance and they were telling us that at exactly midnight you hear rustling noise and foot steps and ppl yelling.
I swear, I kept hearing like a car trying to turn on, like the sound of a starter.. and then we heard foot steps right behind us like coming to us.
we hopped into the car and took off..
i have it all recorded on video if you think im BSing you:|

    anonymous - September 10th, 2007
ahh yes i remember the donkey lady !!! i was more scared of the weeping woman or la yorona ( hope i spelled it roght) but yeah the whole storie of the chinese graveyard from what i heard was the graveyard itself had a burial ground containing chinese immigrants moving to the U S. supossitly their plane crash near the area and of course all passengers passed in a burning wreckage ,none of the victims had identifications on them so basically there in unmarked graves hidden in the cemetery. when you enter the cemetary park in the middle ( NOTE THE CEMETERY ITSELF IS ONLY A BLOCK BIG) turn you car off and flick your lights three times 9 of course shut your lights off they you can see the the sprits walking throught the garveyard but yeah last itme i went there was a big iron fence shut ... and a sign which read " ALL TRESSPASSERS WILL BE SHOT" and " NO SATANIC RITUALS ALLOWED" i guess its a case of
" never mind the ghosts beware of owner" but yeah HEH !

    oh yeah ^^^^^^^^^^^^
its " flick your lights three times" not " flick your light three time 9"

JUST LAST NIGHT MY FRIENDS AND I CALLED THE NUMBER THAT SUPPOSABLY BELONGS TO THE DONKEY LADY :l IT WAS PRETTY SCARY I HEARD UGLY WALES AND HER HOOVES ON THE BRIDGE.. I DIDNT WANT TO BELIEVE IT AT ALL. ALTHOUGHT I DO WISH MY FRIEND GAVE ME THE NUMBER
    avatar david - October 14th, 2007
Thats really interesting, I never heard of a number. You need to see if you can get that for us. If so email me at david [at] aeonity.com
    anonymous - October 17th, 2007
I haven't tried this number in a very, very long time: 225-LADY. I swear that it used to work (i.e. the sound of hooves clopping, then a braying moan. Ahhh, the memories).
    anonymous - October 26th, 2007
that 225-LADY number used to be on in the 80's. there was that one and another for the Llorona. I know this, because i used to call them both from my grandma's house. of course my older sister would threaten me when i didn't want to change the tv channel from cartoons to whatever she wanted to watch, she would say she was going to call the donkey lady to come get me....
but they were definitely working number. the Donkey Lady number did 1 of 2 things, it was either the clack clack clack of hooves or it would be donkey noises. the Llorona would be someone crying, but not like a boo-hoo cry, it was a mono tone dull wailing type of cry. it was freaky! when we used to call them, it was when we used to live with my grandma, so that was probably about 1982, 1983. we only lived with her for a year or so. after that, i don't remember calling anymore....

so last night we went to check the bridge out. but nothing ever happened although it was pretty scary because it was late in the night.
    anonymous - January 06th, 2008
to the legend i herd a lady was in a car accident and all of her fingers melted together and her head hung low so therefor she looked like a donkey or hores lady. thus the name Donkey Lady was born.

    scary shi*.

im only 17 and me n my friends went out there cuz we felt like getting scared...when we got there we saw the bridge crossed it..went down some dirt path[[all around there was trees]]and saw and heard absolutely nothing
as we were walking back down the dirt path there was another direction to go left so we went left and about 45 seconds going in that path we smelled something horrible : like dead but a strong dead smell..so we kept walking and as we were walking we looked down and saw 3 huge blood splats that looked kinda fresh..OMG haha one of my friends said DONT RUN...DONT PANIC!ha and what did we do FUC*ING RAN LOL and as we were running
it was like that smell was following us..idk it was some scary shit.......YOU GOTTA GO!
    anonymous - January 30th, 2008
I don't believe any of you. It's funny how you all have seen something or called and heard something, yet none of you have any proof. No one can remember the numbers and the ones they claim to remember, don't work. And someone posted about a video, yet they never showed it to anybody. You would think if someone had proof of something like that, they would want everyone to see it. Very suspicious to me.
    anonymous - February 18th, 2008
Well i found ur take on the story pretty interesting. I grew up on Applewhite rd., and yes I too know all about that story...As a matter of fact, my fam still lives out there. If u want a better pic of the actuall bridge and not the river. I have a MySPace u can look at it there.....www.myspace.com/luv58 or carmen_pena58@hotmail.com.....It is in danger of being torn down due to the Toyota plant....the actuall bridge is no longer in use anymore....

    anonymous - June 01st, 2008
    what's her number?
    anonymous - July 13th, 2008
i went there two days ago to see whats the big deal and found nothing(obviously)...i walked alone to the bridge and challenged her but nothing happened...keep in mind that all the lights were off, so yeah it was PRETTY DAMN DARK!
one interesting thing that freaked me out at first were the insects that made those "clack” sounds...made me believe for a split second...i do recommend checking it out though...pretty awsome it is...
    anonymous - July 17th, 2008
My family and I went there last month we did here something coming toward us.So we waited to see what it was. Whatever it was it stopped. It felt like we were being hunted or watched, for all I know it could have been a wildpig or something. We came to our senses and just walked back to the truck.Next time we will have some food or something!

I have current video of the Donkey Lady Bridge that I took today. It's the location referenced by David on the Google map. I would list the URL but it won't let me post URLs in the comments. Go to YouTube and search for "Donkey Lady Bridge kotsu777" and it's listed as "The Donkey Lady Bridge of San Antonio". You can't miss it. The bridge is closed off by a guardrail but is plainly visible from the main road off Old Applewhite Road.

Oh, and I almost forgot: I snapped some pictures so you can see the area when it's not flooded. They're over at flickr.com. Do a search for "Donkey Lady Bridge San Antonio". I think they turned out pretty good.
    anonymous - October 14th, 2008
I've been there a few times, but only driving by it. Always wanted to get off and walk around. I have been to the Chinese gravyard. Went there a few years ago. We parked and walked around. You diffenetly get the eerie vibe. The people is was with were scared so we left. But on our way out some people in black robes started running after our car. And yes this really happened, doesn't really mean it's haunted but it does give reason has to why that sign is up about rituals. I guess some people used to out there and conduct rituals of some sort.
    anonymous - October 14th, 2008
I have been there a couple times. There is also something similar in helotes. My mother told me about that one... wouldn't recommend it from what I heard she carries an old style shotgun. anyway I remember from my youth the donkey lady number was 210-225-LADY. don't know if it works anymore but it used to be pretty scary at least to a 5 yr old in 1989.
    anonymous - October 20th, 2008
is there another way to get a hold of donkey lady?
    anonymous - October 26th, 2008

I've heard stories of the D.L. myself. May i add, that i actually know of a person still living (barely), who has had contact with her. The family will not tell his story out of embarrassment. But here goes. One night while playing pool at a nearby Applewhite bar, a patron came in wearing a hooded coat. Upon further inspection, they noticed a donkeys tail hangin down from inside the coat on this person. Immediately, the patrons yelled in spanish, el diablo and started chasing this patron around the bar and out the back door. The mysterious patron made a hoofing sound as it galloped out and into the darkness. I keep teasing this old man about his story, but he just looks back in awe that no one believes him. He has a sound mind, and has never done anything outside the law, and a solid family man. He is not known for telling lies, but this one is too much. Why he continues to tell it is unknown, unless it carries some weight.

3-13-09, my friends and I tried to find the Donkey Lady bridge, but becuase we didn't turn off of Apple White onto OLD Apple White (we were coming from the North) we missed the bridge. All I could figure was that it was torn down and Toyota had built a 4 laner bridge there insted. However , thanks to your google maps link, and your mention of W. Jett, we figured it out. Goole map's satalie image is old, so the NEW apple white isn't on it, but the road is digitally marked in. WE'll have to go out again and try to find the Real bridge- which is most likely closed.
In the end we kept going down Apple white until it turned in to a dirt road which we KEPT going down. That road was pretty scary at night. Some friends of friends who were following us in thier car called us and swore up and down that they saw a woman in the woods there off that dirt road...we don't know if they were messing with us though. the road eventually ended at a gate marked as some ranch. WAY, WAY south of where Jett is.

Also we've read different variations of stories. Never heard about her being Chinese. There's some interesting tetimonials in the "Wierd Texas" book.

Hi David, my name is Jennifer. You linked to my old Haunted San Antonio site on your Midget Mansion page.
I would like to clairfy a couple of things on your original posting of the Donkey Lady. She and the 7 foot tall chinese woman are not one in the same.

The ghost of the seven foot tall Chinese woman is said to wander through Mission Park Cemetary on Military Drive. She is a tourmented soul who took her own life because she could not bear the constant teasing regarding her height. Her punishment for her suicide is to wander the cemetary. An interesting note to this story is that there is indeed a section of the Mission Park Cemetary that only has Chinese people buried in it.

The Donkey Lady is the ghost of a woman who drowned her children in a creek, in the hopes that her lover would not leave her. The punishment for her sins is to wander the creek where she killed her children with the head of a donkey and the body of a beautiful woman.
I remember calling her "number" in the late '80s. All you heard was the sound of a horse running. The number probably doesn't work because the area code in San Antonio at the time was 512.
