As stated: The Steam Community is comprised of people who play all sorts of PC games. Now it's easy to find someone to play with, meet up with friends, connect with groups with similar interests, and host and join chats, matches, and tournaments. Best of all, its all free.

I recieved the invite to join this beta project by Valve some weeks back, I just joined today. The last time that I saw something like this was done was back on Mplayer (now gamespy) in 1999. Obviously the Valve Corporation is now going community based. Can't blame them, social networking brings in traffic.
