Tips on How to Stay Awake

Of course there is caffeine, in all its guises, from Frappuccinos to Vivarin, but sometimes caffeine simply isn't enough, or it is too much. If you can't create on coffee nerves, take heart. Try some of these alternative methods to get you through the night. And, next time, kids, promise us you'll start that project sooner!!!

  1. Keep the room very cold. Use old wooly gloves with the fingers cut out so you can grip the pen or tap the keyboard.

  2. Eat a Slim Jim or other sufficiently pungent foodstuff. Your breath will keep your head from dropping to your chest.

  3. AVOID...your bed, hot showers/baths, the horizontal position and "easy listening" music.

  4. Wash your face and brush your teeth once an hour.

  5. Change your clothes, right down to your underwear. No jammies!!

  6. Go for a brisk run in the cool night air, or take walks every couple hours. Not only will it jolt your sleepy nerves, it's good for your heart, too.

I think you all need to look at this in a little clearer light. The reasons you get tired in the first place are:
1) You sit too long on your butt and your brain emits melatonin to make you store fat and get tired.
2) You are eating too many sugars and simple carbohydrates and get a little bit of a buzz but then crash
3) You've been up too long in the first place and need some heavy Theta Level Sleep to restore the Sodium and Potassium levels on the brain needed for osmosis, which occurs most actively while you are wide awake.

Here are a few smart tips:

* Get something hot (spicy) and chug it. Go out and buy a bottle of tabasco sauce and just chug it. I know it sounds disgusting but the chemical that causes it to be hot will cause your metabolic rate to increase by 25% on average. Also, Norapenephrine, adreniline, and serotonin are emitted into your bloodstream because of the shock from the intense flavor. You'll be wide-eyed and bushy-tailed before you know it. This'll last for a couple of hours.

* Drink low-fat milk or eat low-fat yogurt. The calcium will break down your stored fat reserves and burn your fat, this will give you energy to last.
* STAY AWAY FROM SUGAR: Sugar will cause your body to emit a huge amount of insulin, which tells your body to store fat, rather than burn it (burning your fat will give you energy for a longer time than sugar).
* Get up and move every thirty minutes: if you sit for longer than thirty minutes your body will let out melatonin and you'll be asleep before you know it.

hey i was in the army and served in iraq 3 stay awake bro,eat a cup of pasta evry hour,and stand up anytime you get a chance and listen to fast paced and loud music and strech and drink a few sips of soda or water and keep room bright atleast you dont have to worry about a insurgent shooting at ya,take it easy bro

you do an all nighter every night? so you have never slept?

anyway the tabasco works well i have tried it, not the whole bottle beacuse my mouth was on fire, it made me go get a drink which woke me up more, thanks great yips

Definitely no sweet stuff, & to keep the sodium & potassium levels in the brain in balance, drink warm to hot water, ( as U like it ) with salt added. 1/4 to 1/2 a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a pitcher of water. Don`t use ordinary old table salt either, it`s pure sodium & free-flowing agents will ruin your health, U need to pick up some top quality salt, probably from a `Health Shop` can recommend a top brand, `Sel Marin` organic `Celtic Sea Salt` is one of the best. Drink it as often as U like, it dosen`t have a strong bitter/salty flavour & is full of minerals & nutrients.

its 4am im tryin to stay up till a 8am class...i dont usually smoke cigs but smoke one at least once every hour or so listen to loud music and drink water it helped me go northern mich and slap youself every half hour or so

drink lot's of st. pauli girl beer...the water in the beer is more pure than anything you will drink in the united states. it cleanses out your whole system living you feel like you can walk on air...

If you happen to be a smoker, smoke every few hours. This allows you to be more alert. Or just try avoid watching TV, it causes your brain to gently fall asleep.

S/he has no idea about biology. I am a GCSE biology student and i can see many errors in this persons post. Osmosis happens at the same rate wether you are tired or not and it is beyond your control. Serotonin is used so you can send messages across your brain, it is not released into the bloodstream and has nothing to do with tiredness. You do not need sleep to balance the sodium and potassium (he probably means the body salts) in the brain. The comment also suggested that calcium breaks down fat, not true at all calcium is used in bones, teeth and nails as most of you know. Just because he can use big words that he doesn't know the meaning of doesn't mean he is inteligent.

on my onvernight shift at work, made the bad decision to have a nap in my break earlier.

- cold air temp keeps you alert, or maybe its just not cosy so you fall asleep.

- drinking lots of water

- moving around as much as possible (even just looking around the room and focusing on diff points often)

- generally keeping yourself mentally stimulated works.

well thanks for all the tips everyone , i havent slept much in 2 days now and i work nights , i got 2.5 hrs on sunday and now only 1.5 today plus i need to stay away for another 14 hours , work included in that time , i will let you know tomorrrow how it all works out ,

These are all great tips but as for me ... a mug of concentrated coffee with intence house and trance music can keep me up all night ! not to mention drinking water through out the night !

Here is what I pooled from all the sites I googled:
Stay away from your bedroom (Dont look at the bed, it will seduce you)
Sit on a stiff chair
Sit in a well lit room
Take breaks
Splash face with cold water
Bath in cold water
Make the room cooooold
Doesnt mean you should cuddle under the blanket
Sleep well the previous night
Eat pungent foods
Energy drinks
Low fat yoghurt
Listen to rock music
Apply powder
Keep alarm for every 10 minutes, though you are wide awake.
Watch something interesting
Dance a lil bit
Read out loud
