Unable to Join Network on iPod Touch & iPhone

Posted by David  •  Feb 6th, 2009 6:23:46 pm - Subscribe | Mood: good | Music: Rick Rolled :)

This entry explains the Unable to Join Network for the iPod iTouch & iPhone. The process is simple as all my other tutorials are so here is my step by step walk through.

Ok so you have a Wireless Network and you would like your iPod iTouch or your iPhone to connect to it right? It was working but now its not right? RIGHT?! Ok no worries, I will show you how to get your device connected to your local area network in a jiff.

On your iPod Touch iPhone do the following

  • Go to Settings
  • General
  • Reset
  • Now select Reset Network Settings

This will now reboot and restore you network connections. Pretty simple right? Well it is. If you continue to have problems please post a comment along with your router model number. Happy browsing!

yeah the wifi works fine on my iMac but not any of our family's 3 iPod touches. They worked fine since we had gotten them but just one day they all magically stopped. Tried resetting on the iPod but that didn't work. What I ended up doing was unplugging the actual hub, counted to 10, plugged it back in. Worked like a charm.

So I did what you described and no joy. The iPhone worked fine on the network prior to upgrading to version 3.0

I have checked the router and it's fine. I can connect to it with my daughter's iPhone and my wife's iTouch. Just not my iPhone

Try doing a hard reboot / shutdown on the iPhone / iTouch. HOld down the power button on the top left of the iPhone or iTouch then hit the home buttom at the bottom middle of the device. This will reset it.

    Hi.
My 32gb ipod touch connects to other wireless networks but not my own. It connects if I turn off the WEP key but when it's turned on, it finds the network but with just 1 or 2 bars out of 3 for strength and it just says unable to connect.

Before I upgraded to OS 3.0 my wifi worked fine even with the WEP key activated which is obviously what I want for security.

I've tried resetting the ipod but it hasn't worked and I'm most definately sure its my router settings which don't like something on the new OS 3.0 update.

The router is a ZyXel Prestiege 660. Please help!

hi i have just replaced my GSM iphone with the 3GS. the gsm was connecting to the network fine under WPA security. i backed up my GSM phone and restored the back-up to the 3GS. when i tried to connect the 3GS to the wifi at home using the same password it says "unable to connect". if i turn security off it connects fine. when i turn it back on it does not work again. i have typed the password in carefully 10 times at least. i have re-set the router (power off/on). i have put the phone into sleep and done a hard re-boot. same result. "unable to join the network". useless. this is incredibly frustrating given it did work before and the system gives no clues as to why not working now. any help gratefully received.

    anonymous Says:
    August 29th, 2009

Got the same issue. Was able to surf the web then cannot connect anymore (although settings report WIFI active and running).
SOLUTION: <<I had to reset (power off then on) my WIFI router Netgear WGR614>>
Anything else listed above didn't solve the problem => it is indeed Router related.
--FYI-- I'm using iPod Touch 2.2.1 (5H11a) + Netgear WGR614 WPA-PSK [TKIP] with password // channel 07 // "g and b" active. Strong signal at home, and my lappy doesn't have connection issue when the iPod Touch stops being connected.
However, I still have to figure out why Youtube Application cannot connect (never succeeded since I bought the iPod yesterday)

    anonymous Says:
    August 29th, 2009

and the SOLUTION to "connect connect to YOUTUBE" with the factory settings: forums.cnet.com/5208-7595_102-0.html?threadID=275565
go to date/time settings and change the year to e.g. 2030, then go to Youtube then change the year to 2009 and you can connect to Youtube happy.gif

    anonymous Says:
    August 29th, 2009

another issue related to Youtube: censorship of internet in your country (like mine in Northern Asia... you guess!)

    anonymous Says:
    August 29th, 2009

i tried re-setting the router as per my previous comment including a hard reset by removing the power for 20secs and a soft re-set by pressing "restart" on the router homepage. my theory is that it will work if i restore the iphone and just sync it, rather than restoring a back-up. if that doesn't work then i am lost. i will report progress later...

    anonymous Says:
    August 29th, 2009

didn't work, not initially at least. lost patience with it. so much for apple's fabled 'usability'. "unable to connect" - what kind of useless information is that. even my two year old asks "WHY?", so why not give a bit more useful information. dumb machine.

    anonymous Says:
    September 08th, 2009

i have just tried resetting factory settings on the router. again, no joy. interestingly, i went to the in-laws this past weekend and connected the 3GS to two of their home networks with no issues at all. this suggests it is something to do with my router, but what?! seems like my only next options are queue-up in the apple store and hope for some help (seems unlikely) or buy a new router and see if that works. talk about extreme solutions.

    anonymous Says:
    September 08th, 2009

finally i made it work. belkin support were useless, but apple's second level support suggested upgrading the firmware on the router. i had tried this myself but i couldn't quickly find the upgrade file. belkin support did help with this. after upgrading the firmware, i then changed the SSID on the router and connected on the iphone through the 'other network' option where you can enter name, encryption type and password all at once. what a relief.

Same problem but FIGURED IT OUT! I'm a neophite but played with settings. The iphone asks for a password but really wants the WPA Shared Key (assuming you chose WPA for encryption). To find it on the Linksys WRT54GS interface, put in "192.168.1.1" (without the quotes) in the address box of your browser. Here is where you type in the username if any and password (default is "admin" for both, no quotes). Once you see the router's interface on your screen, find the key by clicking Wireless then Wireless Security and write it down. Type this character string when the iphone asks for the password. Worked for me.

I have tried the disconnecting and the reset of network connections to no avail. My Wi-Fi password is not accepted. I've also tried admin as a password.

Is this a problem with the IPod wifi firmware where the device is not able to find the network? I'm leaning towards the problem being the IPod's registered DHCP issued IP Address being taken by another device and the IPod wifi software not being smart enough to realize that it's previous held address is now being used by another device on the network. Seems like the IPod requires a reset to dump it's previous IP Address in order to seek an new DHCP address.

I've tried all of the above help solutions and still pulling my hair out. After a long extensive search on all the boards of reseting network setting , rebooting itouch and my router/modem, I was still getting "unable to join the network". My solution was as follows: Check through your home for other devices that are running 2.4 ghz frequency. Go unplug them and see what happens. I had a wireless camera network for our baby nursery and backyard running and must have been hogging up the same band that was necessary to connect my itouch to my network. Solution: I unplugged the wireless camera and I am up and running. Also couldn't connect via my Wii to home network and now I can after unplugging the wireless camera system.. VICTORY !!!!!!!!!

Ok, what u have to do is go to settings in your itouch/iphone , then go Wi-Fi and TURN OFF wifi. wait a little and turn it back on. If it didn't work then try reseting network settings , or rebooting your router. Worked for me

My modem router works fine with many different PC's but my Ipod T just could not see the router???
I toggled many of the setting on the router to try and solve, but no joy.

I noted my SSID had a space in it "Belkin KB"
I renamed the SSID without and space "Belkin" and the Ipod immediately saw the router and connection was made.

I had the same problem with my ipod touch, my iphone, and my 27" iMac. Was getting the 'Unable to join....' message on all three. 1)Read the posts here, 2)reset my router by disconnecting from the power supply, 3)reset both ipod touch and iphone by holding down power button till the red slider came up,4)restarted the router,5)started both devices,6) followed Reset Network Settings as described above, and had to put in password in all devices, then they all connected. Thanks.

my iphone will not connect to ANY wi fi network. It is 3G. It worked fine, but somewhere after upgrade to 3.0, did not work with wi fi. I did these things:

    1. reset network settings
    2. hard reset
    3. wiped out the phone and reinstalled all software
    4. replace the wi fi antenna
Nothing worked. It is not just one wi fi network, "Unable to Join" all networks. So, reset of router, etc. won't work. Any ideas??

    EUREKA!
Folks, the solution is very simple!
When you configure the router, you define:
    - The network name
    - The router password
    - The security key
When the iDevice (iPhone or iPod) finds the network, it shows you the Network Name it has located, and prompts you to enter the password. You then must enter the SECURITY KEY, not the ROUTER PASSWORD!!!

2010 WiFi suddenly quit working on barely used 1st gen iTouch (which was working with the latest update). It cannot see any networks anywhere. I have another that can see three networks right now. I have rolled back the firmware to 3.0 and back to 2.2 nothing. I have reset everything, updated and undated the iTouch and nothing. I have reset the router, made sure it was up to date and on and on. I am beginning to think this is terminal. Sometimes I wonder if self destruct mode software is built in to these things to make you got get another?

Apple seems to have a problem here. Of course there are many reasons for "unable to join the network" XYZ, but some of the people on this list, including me, seem to have defective iPhones/iTouch. The symptoms for me are
    1) I get the same error message on ALL wi-fi networks, whether secured or unsecured, home, office, Starbucks, etc. When I first got it, everything worked fine; this developed probably after a software update.
    2) I tried re-installing from scratch; shutting down; resetting the network.
    3) All other wi-fi devices in my house work fine.
    4) I turned it over to my university IT people, who all have iPhones themselves. They tried multiple fixes.

So, this seems to be an Apple software/OS problem, with very strange interactions with other factors. Seems like Apple ought to fix it! But the store said it was hardware, and out of warranty. I'm not spending another $200 to fix a software problem!!

I have saw that Ipod Touch uses 802 b/g for wireless. If you have N wireless setup on your router you will not beable to connect. If your router has the ability to change to the lower speed of B or G you need to change it so Ipod touch will work. I am lucky enough to have someone with open network that is b/g since my entire home network is wireless N.

I get the message "unable to join the network" when I try to connect my iPod Touch. I had a connection which was working fine via my Netgear Wireless-G DG834G modem router on BT in the UK. The problems occured after I changed my SSID and removed broadcast of SSID. Tried many of the tips listed above (hard reboot of iPod, complete reset of content & settings, disconnected power to router, changed all security settings WEP/WPA etc and even disabled security. Still unable to join networks. I'm typing my security password that I set-up upon installation on several new networks. None work. I notice many of you refer to the security key. I don't know what this is.

This is what worked for me.
My iTouch instructed me to select a network - I had 2 to choose from: my personal WiFi network accessible via my personal password and the other seemed to be an alphanumeric code which was for my combo modem/router from Verizon. I chose the modem/router code as my network and entered the WEP code as it appears on the bottom of my modem/router as my "password". For whatever it's worth, I use my combo modem/router as a modem only and use my Airport Express from Apple as my wireless router. Worked like a charm for me and I now have full connectivity on my first generation iTouch.

My iPhone lost connectivity for no apparent reason. My fix is for a Linksys WRT54G router but *might* work on other routers.

    1. Visit the IP for your router (Mine is 192.168.1.1)

    2. Enter username and password.

    3. Click on the 'Wireless' tab >> On the 'Basic Wireless Settings' tab change the 'Wireless Channel' to 11 - 2.462 GHz (Mine was originally set to 1 - 2.142GHz)

    I then was connected immediately.

Careful David is a genius posing as a moron... Or just a genuine moron. Bad news is most of the time it's your wifi router that had actually burnt out. I've had it happen to 2 iPhones already. It is common enough that apple employees told me "it is common enough" when I asked them, "hey! Is this common?" 4 things you can do. Freeze phone to keep it cool enough for wifi to work. Restore phone, which would NEVER be the case. Reset network settings. Or buy the apple care package for $100 and come in a week later and get them to replace the phone for free. Or just pay $250 for a replacement. Sorry, these are the only options. Good luck.

I have tried to connect to both password protected and open internet it comes up with 'unable to join network' no matter where i am. I have reset network connections, restoring the itouch to factory settings. Tried both my work and home wireless which are working fine with other wireless devices (lap tops and others itouches) I have reset routers, even gone to starbucks to try it out and still came up with 'unable to connect to network' The itouch will show networks but when i try to connect i get that message. Its not my internet or my router. The itouch does everything normal connects to my laptop ect. What can I do?

    1. replace if it's impoossible to fix /or/
    2. simply fix the thing!

I have an ipod touch 4G, and I have tried everything, forget network, reset to defaults, reset router, changed password and other things. It's happened before when I first got it, and now a few days ago it stopped again. When I enter the right password it comes up with 'Unable to connect to network'. Without security on the router, it shows full bars, but won't connect on Safari. The router doesn't have 'Network Settings' on the .192... thing. It's annoying because Apple still charge you to phone them and the Belkin people knew nothing last time.

To the guy above: I reset all my settings to default, and I didn't lose any music or apps, or anything. All that happened was the background changed and the setting returned to the factory default.

    Thanks,

    Any ideas appreciatted...

    Hi,

I have an iphone 3G, It used to connect to my internet connection fine. It also connected to my university network without any problems and also an internet connection at my friends house.

Recently its stopped working, when I try to connect to any wifi network it asks for the network key which I type in and it says incorrect password, even though it know its the right password, I have even removed all security from my home network to see if it connects and it still comes up with the error network of 'unable to join network'.

I have restored my iphone network settings and tried and that still won't work, I have also restored my whole iphone through itunes and tried again but still nothing.

so it basically will pick up networks in range but does not connect to them?

PLEASE HELP! it's driving me insane. thanks.

I have a linksys router and was not able to connect with an iphone. It would say "unable to join network", or something to that effect. I found that when it was asking for a password it was really asking for the WPA Shared Key. This password that the iphone is looking for is different than the password that was setup for 'local router access'. If you have a linksys router this info can be found here: go to 192.168.1.1 (type this is your URL bar in you browser) --> then click on "Wireless" --> then click "Wireless Security". You should then see four (4) pieces of info. One of them being the WPA Shared Key - This is what i typed into the iphone when it was asking me for the 'password' my homes router. Hope this helps.

Please help, I am trying to connect my ipod touch (4th generation) to my network using a Dir-655 router. I've read so many other inquiries and suggestions of others which didn't help at all. When I enter my password I receive a message saying "unable to join network." Is that a problem with my laptop or computer, and does it mean the network is preoccupied by other medias?

This can be SO frustrating. Because my computer and everything worked on my WiFi but not my iPod Touch... I tried resetting Network Settings through Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    and it didn't change anything.

    THEN

I saw you mention the hard restart on the iPod, I tired it AFTER resetting my network (as mentioned above) and now it works!

    Here's what I did:
Hold the top left button until it says "Power Off". Slide it to power off. Restart it by hitting the top left button again. Go To Settings>Wi-Fi> Choose your router, put in the password, and hopefully it'll work now!

    Hello Lizz here.!
Ok so did all of the above and it did not work. So I was messing around my Wi-Fi settings omy iPOD Touch 5 gen and this is what worked for me.
    1. Go under settings on your iPod
    2. Click your Wi-Fi
    3. On the "Choose Network" list click OTHER
    4. The NAME should be your router name listed on the bottom
    5. The SECURITY you can also find on the bottom of you router undr ENCRYPT
    6. And the PASSWORD should be the NETWORK KEY also found at te bottom of the router

Well like I said this worked for me so I also hope it works for you
    GOOD LUCK.!!!!!!!

It's only a temporary fix. When the phone starts that unable to join network bullshit, your phone is physically damaged. I've been there and it's the last, since I'd never waste my time or money on an iPhone again.
