"Who is this? Even the wind and waves obey Him!"

what a great description of Xp! who else, but the Son of God could control the forces in our world? when i read about the disciples in this passage i almost laugh because these guys are so much like you and me that it's just funny. i think most of us would have been just like the disciples scared and worried they were going to die. and there's Xp just sleeping! SLEEPING!

sleeping because He had it all under control! and He always does, yet when we have those seasons of life that are chaotic and filled with stress we get just like the disciples. we fret and worry, all while Xp is there next to us, saying "I got it all under control, take a deep breath, trust in me and let me do my thing."

our worrying does nothing but usually complicate the situation. we should just have faith and rest in Xp that in the end it will work out just like He wants it to.

there is a definite distinction between how people respond to Xp in this chapter. on the one hand Xp does this miracle and drives many demons out of a man and the towns people actually beg and plead for Xp to leave. on the other hand Xp is swarmed with people who want to be near Him and if they can just touch Him so that they could be healed.

it's sad and at the same time comforting to see people react in this way. sad cause i would want to see all people be like the crowd and the woman who just wanted to touch Him. but it's comforting knowing that we as humans have responded the same to Xp since the days He walked this earth.

we either want Him in our life and will stop at nothing to make that happen. or we're convicted and scared of the fact that we have not lived up to the bar that has been set for us. when we can get past the fear and doubt, like that of the people who begged Him to leave, we can rest in and embrace His love and mercy.

thanks for the comments, and feel free to not be anonymous

living a life following Xp is plain and simple...an adventure. when Xp sends His disciples out He has them take just their staffs, tunic, and sandles. nothing else. i think we as Christians have lost this concept of what it means to follow Xp.
we've gotten holed up in our churches and are afraid to take the risks that Xp obviously was expecting us to take. He sent His own disciples out with nothing more then the clothes on their back and the sandals on their feet.
some how we need to get back to that. we need to live that adventure...the adventure that can only come from fully depending on Xp. that's what the disciples were called to do...that's what we're called to do.

a large section of Mark 7 discusses the concept of "clean and unclean". the Jewish traditions (and laws) mandated that certain foods (pork, food offered to idols, etc) were "unclean" and therefore Jews could not consume them. Xp comes with this radically new idea that "there are no unclean foods".
this idea for most of us seems quite foreign since we don't have any of these kind of stipulations on what we eat (unless you're on an Atkins diet, carbs are bad bad bad lol). but Xp doesn't waste time talking about what we should eat and not eat, He gets to the heart of the matter.

we create traditions and some how crown them as the truth and scripture!

more then likely if you've ever been to church or known a "Bible thumper" you've heard that something is unbiblical. for instance you may have heard that drinking any alcohol (being of legal age or not) is completely wrong and that you'll burn in the fires of hell. this would be a TRADITION that people have made. the Bible is quite clear that the only sin associated with drinking alcohol is drunkeness. do you think it would be a sin to drink any alcohol considering one of Xp's miracles was turning water into wine?

Xp's point in this passage is clear. the evil things in life come from our own desires. they do not come from what type of food we eat. we have to get away from making traditions that are not of a Biblical nature!

if you are someone who has had a bad taste left in your mouth from an encounter with a person or church who has created these so called "traditions" let me apologize for them. and then let me say look into scripture to see what is truly of God and what is of man.
