This morning when I woke up I felt it in my throat, this irritated feeling of the upper throat, indicating that I was either fighting off or getting an infection there, a cold. Fun. So far today I have managed to fight it off though, so hopefully it won't hit me full force.

I left early today, started at 09:00 instead of the agreed on 09:30, but it was alright. Next week I am starting at the normal time of 09:00 again and that will last all through the summer. I did the basics and left for home again after I was done.

I did need a few things before I could really head off, like getting my nasal spray just in case that infection hit the nasal area. I need to be careful with that since when it clogs up the stuff goes up to my ears, and THAT is where I do not want an infection to be. Very weak spot, and hurts like (pardon my French) a motherfucker.

When I saw a couple of guys washing windows I spoke to one of them and asked them if they washed regular homes too. They did, and after a bit of back and forth talk I arranged them into going to my Wednesday morning's client who desperately wants a person to come wash windows for her, for upstairs. I went to see her right after and I was lucky! She had just gotten home from some grocery shopping of her own, and she was very glad that I was able to find her some folks. Gave her the phone number which she can call sometime early next week, and after that all we can do is wait.

Immediately after I got home it was still nice out, so I took a few pictures of the exchange car for posterity sake. It would be fun to see what car I drove and what license plate number was on it back when.

Dad hopped online, still no internet, so he was still on my 14k4 modem which (despite it being tiny) gave him quite a whopping speed. For dial up modems, that is. I asked him if the garage had called about his car yet and he immediately called them. Indeed, it was ready to be picked up, so I suggested we pick that up right away, considering he had stuff to do in the afternoon, and the weather today was so so. Having the car available would prevent him getting wet yet again.

So.. off we went, picked up the car, and then we headed back in our own cars. He followed a different route than I did, considering the road is getting so bad that the dips on the side are a bit too deep for my comfort, especially having this exchange car now that I of course don't know as well as the one I normally drive.

I did some grocery shopping but before I got around to that I spoke with dad's friend's helper for a bit, who wondered if my car was ready already. They had checked it out and saw nothing on the hood anymore. That was because I put a thick coat of wax on it, I told her. Only at a certain angle it could be seen still.

Then they didn't see the car anymore, did I park it all the way back in the other street or something, as they saw it there. Told her that that one must have been the car's twin, as I would never park it that far away.

Then another story that the car was no longer there and ohhh I hope nothing bad happened to it. Apparently they hadn't noticed the writing on the side of the exchange car, indicating that it was indeed an exchange car. *shakes head* Sweet, but.. ahrm. I told her that when she was biking home she could take a good look at it.

Got the groceries, grabbed a bite for lunch and then my dad called again. The car was ready. What? Already? A day early! This strange feeling hit me. I wanted my own car back, of course, but I was kind of looking forward to driving this one for another day still. Double feeling, really, but yeah.

Picked up my dad and off we went yet again, to the same city where we had just picked up my dad's car. We drove up and right then and there I saw my car standing there. The hood is soooo smooth now, and the little dent that was part of it for years is now gone. The nose looks.. strange really. It is perfect, don't get me wrong, but I guess after a long time you get used to its scratches that were already there, if you catch my drift. But she's looking swell again and when the weather is ok tomorrow I will take a picture of the new and improved front.

Driving was quite an experience! The difference in sitting positions was so obvious. It was like getting out of a luxury car and getting into one of those shaped seats that sports cars have. Including the low lying down way of sitting. Trust me, my car is not a sports car, but yeah, it feels that way alright, compared to the other one.

The pedals were in the wrong spot compared to the exchange car, but it didn't take long to get used to it again and after the initial feel-r-uppers it was back to the way it was again. Glad to have it back, familiar feeling, ahh.

Tomorrow afternoon (got a call from a painting company) a guy would come by to fix my back door window. He kept saying I had anti break-in screws on the frame, and I told him that I had taken a good look at them, and that we would have to agree to disagree and if he had a problem with it he would have to call the rental company. I was in no mood for discussions at all at that point in time.

He wouldn't need to, so he said, he would bring stuff along to fix things proper. Alright, wait and see I guess, but I have this feeling I have to watch over this guy's shoulder to see if he does it right this time. Man, one would expect things to be done proper if a professional is going to handle it, no?

Tomorrow at 15:00 it's showtime. Best get it over with.

Oh yeah.. and before I can go home I have to go to the body shop again. I forgot to take my work bag out of gray's trunk. *hand forehead*

Friday morning started very interesting. The PLAN was to wash the windows on the outside, but as every good plan has a plan wrecker, so did this plan have one. I entered the house and as usual I looked at the floor. Habit from stepping into too much poo in my younger days. My eyes spotted this terribly speckled floor. Brown carpet, white splatters over it. I asked if someone had painted in there or something, and.. to my horror.. someone had.

The grandson had come to visit and he had repainted his grandmother's hallway with white latex. Now.. I don't mind latex, but I do mind people who don't have the sanity in their brains to tape things off proper. So.. what happened is the frames of the doors, the wall protectors on the floor side, the windows above the doors, parts of the doors themselves.. everything was covered with a layer of latex. Even on the kitchen floor (vinyl) there was latex. Oh man.... it looked horrible!

This lady was obviously at her wits end, not having seen soon enough that he was working without taping stuff off, and getting visitors that very afternoon. After I had tested on the kitchen floor and had seen that the stuff actually came off with plain water and soap my job for the morning became clear: I was going to sweat myself up cleaning all that gunk from everything that didn't listen to the name ceiling or wall.

The client helped me a bit, but she soon had to stop as she got too tired. I was able to finish it all up and dust randomly and vacuum left and right before it was time. That sure was something else alright! Pfff.

After that I left for the body shop, but during the drive there I almost got run over twice, was anticipating and avoiding animals suddenly jumping on the road, not to mention bicycles... it was kamikaze Friday that day. I was extremely pissed when a garbage truck with no right of way whatsoever tried to push me off the road, nearly hitting me in the process. Goddamn! I don't swear much but THAT time I was swearing like a boat worker alright.

At least I got there safely, and also got back home safely, with my bag. I paid my gas bill that I owed them still, and that was that. My dad has all the paperwork now so he can keep it all together in his binder.

I spent the entire Saturday tuning and tweaking my SeaMonkey install to the way I like it. Having a few extensions installed the major one was Tabbrowser Extensions, and that one has given me a lot to play with. It took me a day or two to figure out what exactly everything does and then I decided to move my tabs over to the side, from the top.

It was annoying me that many tabs up there becomes unreadable. Multiple rows doesn't work on my install (maybe a bug, who knows), and I still wanted readability. I could set a minimum size for the tabs, but that would mean a tab bar is filled up quite fast and with the set width of the tabs, you catch my drift.

So.. I moved them to the left hand side at first. It felt way off to put them there, so.. back to the top they went. Last Saturday I decided to put them on the right hand side, and oh yeah, much better. I had already discovered in the process that SeaMonkey gives you a nifty little preview screen of what is under a tab when you mouse over it, but this tabs on the right stuff was the solution for me.

I have fiddled quite a bit with the settings and now when I double click on a tab, it reloads. When I do that on the tab bar all the tabs reload. In order to quickly open a new tab all I have to do is middle click on the bar, and when I accidentally close a tab shift click will bring it back for me. When I scroll the wheel while in the tab bar it will roll over and open the various tabs for me.

Of course I also have mouse gestures enabled and a bunch of other minor things have been added that you cannot see right off the bat. I did go into about:config a lot to speed things up which helped tremendously. I feel like I have a cockpit now from which I can steer every single thing I want. The reduction in width of the visible screen is something I can live with just fine.

Next was my dad's internet. He has been without for days now. I even checked into flat fee dialup for him, but no luck on that in this country. This morning I went to the website of his new provider and checked out the modems. He is still waiting for his new modem to be shipped to him and a welcome letter that hasn't arrived yet either. The latter one holds important info on email things and what not password and settings related.

Upon checking the modems I noticed something interesting. They have CopperJet modems. The same modem brand I have. As his line provider is BBNed, just like mine is. Ahhh.. I drew the logical conclusion that this might be a good shot in the dark with a chance of a hit.

So, in the afternoon I took my modem off the wall (it's mounted against the wall for me for easy lights viewing and no table clutter), packed it up and went on my way. I connected the thing at my dad's and we restarted the ethernet.

Lo and behold! Google comes up and works! The shot in the dark hit its mark.

Now all we had to do was set HIS modem up the way MINE is set up. However no luck getting into my modem settings though (found out later that is related to some bug), but my dad had found this little bit of info on the net that was applicable to his BBNet line. Subnetmask or something was set to 0.0.0.0 and that should have been 255.255.255.0. Small but fatal error on the provider's side telling me that it was 0.0.0.0.

After I changed that it all worked dandy on his modem as well and he immediately went and did a speedtest, and we saw that he is getting the speed he is paying for. His upload could be better, but it's acceptable.

Thank goodness he hadn't sent his letter of complaints yet. He changed that around to contain the latest info. He spent 33 Euros on helpdesk calls which pretty much got him nowhere. He still hasn't got that letter with important info (I re-requested that one for him this morning), and no modem either that he DID pay for.

All in all I am glad it is sorted out now, but it took way too long to do so. I was plain lucky to see my modem work, and we were even more lucky that those settings he had found did indeed work on his system. I am curious how the provider will respond to the letter.

As for me, I wrote another letter to the rental company, complaining about my back door. The guy came over on Friday afternoon and did not take the window out, yet again. This time he claimed that it was stuck to the glue. Yes of course it was now, you put the glue there yourself last time you came over!

In any case.. a letter went to them, and a link in there to a picture I made of the door on Saturday morning when it rained and I noticed the problem still wasn't fixed yet. I cannot repaint that door if it isn't fixed first. So.. we wait again.

eadwine Gas leak Monday, March 5th 2007 @ 22:48 - Subscribe
I have been feeling a bit icky all day, The morning I started out feeling a bit feverish, but I didn't want to call in sick just because of that. It's a rebound, or rather a continuation, from the weekend where I was having the runs pretty much all the time.

I started by calling the gas company this morning. I was tired of that smell in my meter room, and by this time I was pretty much convinced that this had to be a gas leak. And if not, well, then at least it would have been looked at. Turned out I had to call back after work because these folks weren't reachable before 08:30, which is when I have driven off already.

The first client wasn't feeling too dandy either, but we both managed. At one point in time she told me I had broken her Swiffer (one of these old type kinds, with the hair) because I used it as a mop. I had come downstairs with it once, and it was wet. I was like what the hell? I did NOT do that. My memory may be bad, but do THAT? No way in hell. She stuck to her case though, all I could do was shrug and mutter inside myself that I did NOT do this. Geez, do I look to be that stupid or something? *shakes head* Must have been one of my replacements from the rare times that I had been either sick or had a day off or something. I did NOT do that. *shakes head again in disbelief*

People will blame you for the weirdest things, but this is the weirdest one yet. Then she says she is not losing her memory yet, but... oh well. I did not do this, period. I am not that stupid.

Then she expects me to be able to remove a calcium stain that has been there for ages. "Yeah but bleach would work". Bleach does not work, all bleach does is make it look like it is gone, it does not take care of the problem. Thing is in her shower there is this drain from her boiler. The overflow runs in the drain of the shower. However, the water in this town that I work with is very hard water, high in calcium, and that shows. Now.. imagine this water running over this very same spot every single day, day in day out without a stop. And now I have to remove this stain?

No can do, sorry. Not unless you are willing to treat this spot daily you are not getting rid of it. Then she wants me to scrape it off with a knife or something. I can see this already, I scrape it off with a knife and then she starts complaining about scratches on the floor. I can wait for that to happen now, and then she'll turn that one around into an argument that I ruined her floor. I am not falling for that one.

The thing that irritates me the most is the fact that she has another person helping her. Not that I dislike her, but "she does her work so well" blah blah. Client proceeds with telling me that this helper mopped the hallway on her knees! Umm.. that is NOT allowed. We have to follow a protocol to avoid us getting a work injury, mopping on our knees is NOT included in our protocol. "Oh but she does things much better that way".

I cannot tell you how much that irritates me. I feel like I am working there for shit, she does everything better.. bah. My response to that is not to work even better. Hell no. If she wants to be on her knees to clean the piping behind the couch (she did that too *rolls eyes*) then she is welcome to. I will limit myself to the remainder of the work which is plain standard every day dusting and vacuuming. It is something I will bring into the work meeting for sure, it irritates me enough to do so.

Client number two was her nice usual self and she is a world of difference alright. I never quite know how to behave when she tells me that she tells other people how much she likes me, and that she likes talking with me. Heh, I listen to the same stories over and over again, but if that is what makes her happy I gladly do so. I give her some feedback, I try to encourage her to do new things, to stand up for what she feels is right and she learns things alright.

I have been putting on a record every time now that I was there, and lo and behold: she is doing it now! She single handedly, without my guidance, put on a record, started the spin and put the needle on (too far, ok, but hey! she did it). I am proud of her, and glad too. After all this time she finally found the courage to do it. Nothing is going to break. The worst thing that can happen is that she breaks the needle or scratches a record to hell. It's not as bad as wrecking a car or something like that.

While I was there I got a call from the gutter folks to make an appointment to come re-align my front and back gutter of the house that are hanging through. I told the girl on the phone to tell the work folks to bring extra equipment since the one on the front had now broken at the weld and needed more than just plain aligning. They'll come over at 14:00 on Thursday afternoon.

I went home and upon arrival immediately called the gas company. Too bad I had the wrong number, because I spent 7.5 minutes waiting for someone, at 10 cents a minute, telling me to call the toll free number since that is the one I needed. Argh!

So.. I call this number, report the issue. I get this question: "Does it smell bad?" Does it smell bad? That sure is open to interpretation. Which is what I said. What is bad? How bad IS bad really? Does it stink, yes it stinks, but I have no idea how bad on the Richter scale it stinks, no. "Have you done anything to the room there recently?" This room thing is a closet really, what on earth should I be doing in there anyway? Which is what I told him. "Alright, someone will call you back in due time".

At this point in time I expect that to be sometime next week. Not 15 minutes later my phone rings and this unknown cell phone number is in the display. "Yeah, I am calling about that leak?" Yes? I can have someone there between now and an hour or two, is that ok?

*insert bulge eyes* I am not used to this fast treatment stuff so I must have sounded really stupid to the guy on the phone. Sure thing, after about an hour there was this mechanic guy on my doorstep with the necessary equipment to test the pipes for leaks, and sure thing, he found a big one. But in a not too convenient spot. He would have to dig in my yard to get to the gas closure point since it was before the gas mains point.

Ah crap.

He pretty much said the same thing. Not only that, he would have to wait for a colleague of his to get to the scene. He called his supervisor and explained the situation to him, and asked his permission to do the repair on an active line. All he had to do was mount a new knee in between the pipes, so no welding or anything was involved.

The supervisor asked if someone else was present there (yep, me) which I am sure is a security issue should something happen to him (like him passing out or something). He got the ok and I put Dixie upstairs now since I had to open the front and back door and block them so the wind could draft through the hallway which is where he would be working.

Quite a fun sound, 100 millibars worth of gas pressure, released as soon as he screwed the old knee off. He had brought some corks so he rammed that in the hole and then prepped the new knee to be put in. After he was all done he ran along all the pipes with his meter, did so about four times, then restarted my HR heater and all was fine and dandy again. Great! No more leak, no more icky smell in that closet anymore. On to the next interesting challenge. I am telling you, life here is never dull!

eadwine New template! Tuesday, March 6th 2007 @ 21:27 - Subscribe
In the morning the drive to work was spent pondering what to do at the client when I got there, but she settled the problem herself when she asked me if I was going to do the little shack first or later on. Oh, that is easy then, I'll start right off on that one.

I don't want to startle her by doing something unplanned or that I haven't mentioned the week before because that unsettles her too much. But, since she suggested this one herself I am perfectly happy to follow her on it. An hour later the entire thing was nice and clean again. Not something you would do every day, maybe once a year or something.

For next week she even came with a suggestion: the fridge. Sure thing. I am dreading things a little on that one with where to put the stuff that comes out of it, but as long as I remain calm and listen and watch closely I am sure I will be able to figure out what it is exactly she wants and how she wants it. It'll be alright.

I was not bothered by my feeling icky as much as I was yesterday and this evening I found that the runs has stopped as well. Thank goodness for that.

This afternoon I had off and I got really bored. Mepislovers has been pretty much offline for most of the day due to a server problem, and everything else at some point in time has been checked and read. I was getting a bit tired with the winter template that was up before, so I went on a search for something new, more spring like. I think I have lost my first pictures from the camera in "the crash" that happened two years ago, so unfortunately I couldn't delve from my own pictures of nature anymore. I did find something online though.

I have been fiddling with the Gimp and layers, opacity, gradients and trying to combine all that into this template's picture. It's been a challenge, but it has worked. The result is different from the original alright.

My original idea was to make something with opacity, like the original template has, but in order to do that it has to end on the sides with something close to white to be able to blend in to the background. As I wasn't able to do that with this image I decided to take a different route and go with the sidebar image only. But that still had to be adapted in order to make it a whole in that left hand side. I think I managed quite alright, and it is now easier for me as well to change the template around as I only have to worry about the top gradient.

On a different topic, my hair has been given a cut again so I am not being bothered by my bangs anymore. Yay! They had gotten really long despite the fact that it was the normal interval of cutting, so I must have been doing something right, making it grow so fast.

After she had left my dad and I went on the internet to figure out his login stuff. He had gotten a letter from the internet provider but we found out that half.. more than half the pages we went to didn't work. I decided to go to Windows then for the heck of it, because it would probably be IE only. Nope, wrong again.

Finally I managed to find a spot where we could type an actual email to the folks in which we complained about the extremely bad programming of the site. I even checked the source, nothing at all in there that could help us further. Bad coding, really bad coding. Bah.

eadwine Sick Wednesday, March 7th 2007 @ 22:12 - Subscribe
This morning when I started off at the first client I already felt it coming. I knew I wasn't going to make it through the whole day today. It started out with this nice big headache that even a 400mg Ibuprofen couldn't kill off, meaning it officially counts as a migraine for me. Regular headaches hit the road within 15 minutes when I take one, this one didn't. Bah. You know what it is like when at some point in time you'd rather cross your eyes and close them than keeping them open.

I let the afternoon client reschedule by allowing him to choose between my usual afternoon off, tomorrow, and Friday's. He picked tomorrow. Me in my headache state forgot the appointment with the gutter folks tomorrow afternoon, but those were easily rescheduled to Friday afternoon 14:00. At least that was settled easily enough and after I had called him I called my team leader to inform her of the planning change.

I also rescheduled the plans I had of visiting my dad to get his ftp stuff going for his new web space, made a new appointment for 13:00.

Today was voting day though, and I am pleased to hear the party I voted for won big time again, just like with the national elections back in November. I actually had to conquer a mud pile to get to the voting room, people working on the street, repaving.

I spent my afternoon calmly, reading some things left and right and watched a movie before now. I did manage to get myself to do the dishes before bed, when I am sickish I don't want to do those. I made myself, tomorrow I will be thanking my responsible self for taking charge.

At least I am feeling a lot better. The headache is almost gone, and hopefully tomorrow I will be able to function normally and work the whole day, in the afternoon explaining to the man what had happened to me. It's always tough to reschedule someone, but it is better than having them get a whole other helper sometime during that week and not knowing who it is going to be. Insecurity sucks for some people, that is for sure.

Well.. I have spent my whole scale of interesting words on somewhere other than this blog, so.. it's a boring entry, sue me. I'm off to bed.

eadwine Changes Thursday, March 8th 2007 @ 23:28 - Subscribe
Things are changing, and as early as next week. My morning client, upon my arrival, announced that she was going to be admitted to an elderly home facility, in the sick chambers. Those folks will move from there to temporary stay chambers, and from there on become regulars.

She told me that she feels her husband is with her (note that he has died years and years ago), and that is something I hear quite a bit from people who are close to passing on. It shocked me, and at the same time it was confirming what my thought was when I walked in and saw her.

The main idea is: I have lost that client and thus those hours. I called my team leader, and she immediately said that she would hook me up with a new client for the coming Thursday. I told her I didn't know how long this sick stay was going to last, but yeah, she also knows the above logical scene of events there.

I don't think the lady will survive much longer, to be honest. And despite the fact that we were constantly disagreeing on my work materials and the way things were done I will miss her. She was steady, in her own at times irritating way. I can only hope I will get an easy to work with client back in her stead. I rather like the way my clients are right now.

I must say I was partially surprised about my team leader's immediate response of finding me another client. I remember her telling me that I have way too many hours of work, contract only having 15 and me working 21 to 24 in a week, however I think my email about the fact that I am just cutting things even with these hours mattered. I cannot work for less than the 21, I'd be suffering a major financial cutback if I were forced back to the 15 a week. Well.. if you can talk about a force back, I never worked 15 a week, I started out with the 21 from the get go.

It's confusing but reassuring at the same time. Her contradicting herself on the hours by simply handing me a new client, instead of taking the easy copout by simply letting those hours drop out of the loop. At least I know she cares about the fact that I need those hours to get by. She could have simply gone by the numbers.

Now I have to wait and see what the new client will be like, and how they are going to respond to me. What kind of person will it be like? I have had everything from sturdy to spiritual, the latter being quite fun because you can tell things about yourself and things you have encountered which you normally wouldn't share like that with the world. The fact that it makes them feel less "weird" helps them in feeling more comfortable with me in return and we are full circle. Instant like on that end. All I can do is wait and see what happens, and hope for the best.

The afternoon client was one I should have gone to yesterday afternoon, but I was sick then and had him choose where he rather wanted to be planned into. He chose today, and even though I usually have the afternoon off on Thursdays, I gladly moved him into that spot to sort things out to both our likings: he doesn't have to get a replacement, and I don't have to deal with better or worse comments about the replacement. We both win, as I keep things in my own hands, and he has the person he is used to.

He fell down though, at one point in time, that was a scary one there. I was washing the windows outside and had just proceeded to walk back out again when I heard and felt this kabroom like sound. That did not feel like a closing door, and after determining that one in a split second I ran back inside to find him sitting on the floor, him being amazed he was down there. He had simply lost a few seconds there, probably low blood pressure, is my guess.

I was able to pick him up from the floor fairly easily. At least I know that hauling 60kg up from down at my feet is something I can do without too much trouble. Hopefully he will be able to continue living at home for a while longer (it is what he indicated he wanted) and he also told me that he didn't want to die yet.

That is a first.. all the clients I have had that went backwards in their physical health indicated that they didn't want to live anymore. Just come and take me, is what they say. This man however apparently has enough to live for to WANT to live and I like it. It is a welcome change from the main stream.

If he wants though, he can go and move straight to that same elderly home that the lady is going to. He doesn't want that yet though and he told me: "I have a good helper, you know, that makes things easier". Grinning at me at the same time he spoke. Made me blush alright, and I topped it off with a joking comment saying: "Yeah, I know her personally, she's a nice person". *laughs*

Good thing we can do that all the time, laughing a lot despite his fall and decreased physical state. I have taken over a motto from one of my clients, I have no clue anymore who said it first, but it goes as follows:

A day not laughed is a day not lived. Damn truth, that.

Friday morning went by nice and fast and the first thing I did when I got home was start filling out my leave of payment form for some municipality taxes here. It's not a huge amount but if my income grants me the freedom to not have to pay, then I'd rather take that chance of course!

About 15 minutes before the appointment with the gutter people I got a call from them. They wouldn't come because of the weather. Nothing will hold then if they repair something. Perfectly reasonable as it was pouring down. I called the main office and rescheduled for this coming Thursday afternoon.

As I was on the phone anyway I also called work for an appointment with someone from the salary department. I have these hours stated on my 4 week slip that I can take off still. However, the amount is so strange that I can't make heads or tails out of it, and I also need to know how I can spend these.

I mean.. I have a 15hr a week contract, but in order to make a living I need to get paid at least 21 in that week. I work the 21 no problem, but my main concern is when I have a week off if I can get a payout of 21 instead of the 15 as per contract. Seriously, you do not expect me to take a vacation when I get cut in pay when doing so, do you? Hence my reluctance in taking time off. I need to get this explained to me good and proper so I understand what I can do with all this.

I have downloaded Virtualbox that evening and after quite a few mistrials managed to install the program. At least I jotted down what I need to do, just in case I need to reinstall. After setting the settings right I went and installed Windows 2000 Pro on it, in the hopes that this bit of software was able to run my scanner properly.

I have had this scanner for over two years, and have had no luck in getting it to run properly. Linux itself does not support the thing (that becomes a major annoyance after 2 years, let me tell you that) and neither wine nor CrossOver Office (both things that enable you to run windows things inside Linux) managed. So.. I was having a hard head in it really, but.. I was hopeful.

It paid off thank goodness. After the initial annoying thing of installing Windows and clicking no and yes to various things I installed the scanner software. CO got the furthest with that before, but it crapped out almost straight after loading the setup screen. This Virtualbox program however did not. I haven't been able to use Windows this easily yet! Boots much faster in fact than the real life Windows, imagine that.

After the software was installed I tried, and it failed. Oh booger. Then I saw that my scanner wasn't enabled (you can select that from the devices menu), clicked to do so, waited a little bit and tried again. It worked! So.. now I have my Mepis machine running, and in there a virtual machine, Windows.

All I have to figure out now is how to get the shared folder thing set up, but that is in the works. I already got me a blue screen to boot, something I hadn't seen in my installed version yet. I cannot send my webcam image to someone else in MSN Messenger, but oh well. I have Linux for that now anyway.

What else useful did I do this weekend.. I wrote a letter to my rental company which will get mailed tomorrow morning. My roof is leaking, oh joy. Those people re-doing the cement work on the chimneys of the houses have managed, in their eager to sit straight, to kick a roofing tile out of place, so now when it rains... you get the picture.

Also because they cleared out the old cement in the chimneys and the new cement hasn't been applied yet, it is very likely this is a co-cause of the leak I have now. Thank goodness I discovered it early on, and I can put a towel where the water goes along so it doesn't go down to the bedroom and ruins my wallpaper.

Hopefully they will come and fix this quickly. I put in the letter that they should, to avoid damage. I mean.. not just to my wallpaper but also to the house itself. I have wooden floors in the attic and the bedrooms, and they should not be touching water for a long period of time. It's been dry the past day or two, so that is good news at least.

Then the other useful thing.. I washed my windows downstairs, inside and out. *gasp* Last time I did the inside was when I moved in, last year in April, so it was due alright. All the kitty nose prints that were on there have been removed and things look better from the outside now too. Not that I care too much about what other people think, but I like things at least a LITTLE bit clean.

As I was at it, I grabbed a garbage bag and went in my pantry. Everything that was past the "good" date got tossed, no excuses. That cleared things out rather nicely, and I decided to check the fridge and the freezer as well, while I was at it. Half full bag got put in the garbage as a result of that. I have some room left again!

Dad called me a little while after that, telling me he had no internet again. Oh man that provider is giving some headaches alright. I downloaded some user manuals that I thought he might be able to use and went off to see him. By bike no less, yes. The weather was nice and I didn't feel like taking the car for such a short stretch.

We spent some time talking about things, I tried my Mepis LiveCD on the machine and the funny thing was that the kweather applet loaded, the ifdown ifup eth0 command worked, but.. no net.

We tried with the other unofficial modem and that one gave me a normal result. No eth0, no net. I guess the official modem is doing something in between the user and the ISP, not a clue. I told my dad to remain on the old modem for a bit since that one gives us normal results and we spent some time talking about this whole deal. Then he checked his email and lo and behold, it was working again!

Shortly thereafter it went down once more and when it came up yet again we quickly reset the official modem and re-did the install. If there is ONE thing that is going very nicely it is the installation of the modem, very smooth and quick.

His internet speed isn't exactly top and after checking in the old modem I saw that he gets more than he got a contract for, speed wise, but he is not getting the speed he reasonably (loss and such taken into account) should get. He wrote a letter of complaints about that, and also about the fact that there doesn't seem to be a list anywhere on the site with planned maintenance causing down time. My ISP has that on their site and in that I found some info that was also important to my dad. Major downtime then, so..

Anyway.. complaint written and I will be amazed if they actually will respond to the thing. The helpdesk is not something that gets my praise.

It is now Sunday afternoon and I intended to do some yard work today, but I don't feel like it at all, so.. poo with that. It's not like the grass is four inches high or anything and the coming week is looking rather good weather wise so I can do it when I get home someday.

Tomorrow morning I have to deliver this letter to the rental company about the roof, tomorrow afternoon I have to deliver and get a proof of receipt from the municipality about this bill thing that I got from them. By the time I get home I can start dinner again. I'll be glad when that all is done!

Over 1000 hits already, pretty nifty. Sure, those aren't all unique hits but it is a fun thing to see none the less. I don't think I had that many in such a short period of time back on Diary-X. Thanks for reading! grin.gif

First thing I did today before even driving on to work was getting this letter in the mail that is for my rental company about the roofing tile. Hopefully they will respond soon on this issue, since it is quite important. I will have to stick to the towel plan if they are slack, I don't want my wall paper that I took so much time getting right on the walls to get smeared with roof gunk.

At the first client things went reasonably alright. I wasn't compared to the other helper as much as last time and all I can do is my best. There wasn't much that needed to be done, so I took it easy too, I have butchered myself plenty of times there to take it easy for a change.

She was having trouble with the menu of a DVD so I took some time to calmly explain things to her and the main thing turned out to be the way she was pointing the remote, which was at the TV. Of course this is an easy to make mistake, and I added it on her notes slip "point the remote at the DVD player" *giggle* Hopefully that will help her now.

The one disk she was having trouble with getting Dutch speech on there I took back home with me. I have asked my dad if he could re-master it for her so it will start only with the Dutch speech and nothing else. Wait and see how that will go.

It was so sunny today that I knew for certain that the afternoon was going to be an outside day, so, after having done the groceries and eating a sandwich I went off to client number two and found that indeed.. we were going to French it on the dusting part, just rush over stuff with the vacuum cleaner and then head on outside.

She got on the scooter and then I remembered the tires. "No, stay put, just don't drive, I will get some air in them." She thought it quite a hoot when I got down on my knees to get to the front tire in the center of the wide thing. The pump just barely made it. It drove better than before though, so that was a good thing.

It was so sunny I didn't even wear my sweater, which I usually do, AND wear a body warmer. It was 17 to 17.5 C outside, unheard of at this time of year when you should take off 10 of those to get to a normal value.

After work I went straight to the municipality to get my paperwork handed in and signed as received, so now I don't have to worry about that anymore either and I am on time filing the thing. All I can do now is wait and see what the decision will be.

Soon after I left for work I was driving behind this child on a bike. I could have easily passed, but I decided not to, something held me back and made me stay behind the little girl. Not even 10 seconds later I was really glad I had done that, because she crossed over to the other side of the street, right in front of me. I didn't have to do an emergency break since I was already going so slow.. but just imagine if I had hit the gas pedal to pass... brr.. those are things you rather not think about!

It was weird all over though, because about a kilometer further down the road a girl on a bike was riding toward me, with in her hand a leash. No.. there was not a dog on the other end; she was leading a horse along. Amazing things can happen in this country *laughs*

At the first client the fridge was on the menu. Last week we had agreed to clean that thing and when I got there and parked the car I repeated to myself: "This is out of the ordinary for her, go along with what she wants and how she wants it and it'll be fine. If she does not want a shelf removed, leave it be." At least the entire unit will be cleaner when 95% of the gunk has been removed.

We had agreed to do that at the end of the day, but when I got there she was already waiting for me, in the kitchen, with the fridge open and the freezer defrosted. She had gotten up early and had managed to unplug the thing and empty it out as far as she could.

I was pleasantly surprised and, even though I was early, told her I would go and grab a bucket right away to start cleaning. Calmly and orderly I cleaned out everything that I could easily reach and went to reinsert things to her orders. She smiled a lot and even laughed sometimes to remarks that I made; the better we get to know each other, the better we are getting along to the point of joking and everything. I sure hope her class 2 will remain with her!

She told me she had had another helper before me, but there were two things that went wrong. One fault was the helper's, the other was her own. She said she had pushed the girl a bit too hard by being even more precise than she is with me, and the helper couldn't handle it because she wasn't used to compromising. That is the one difference she noticed with me; I AM willing to do that.

It helps that I had another very difficult client back at the old town that I used to work at, one that was more extreme than her, and the colleagues gave the same response to her as they do to this client. "Do you work for Mrs, So and So? Oh pfffffff." I guess I am used to the more difficult of the bunch and I must say: I am very happy I sort of passed that test, also for the team leader's sake as this lady has not called her once to complain about me. There is for one nothing to complain about, but the fact that she is a difficult one makes her more prone to calling in.

I don't really care how things get done, and given the fact that I am not that precise myself sure helps to slack where these difficult ones apparently want me to slack, and to give the little extra effort where they think it's important. How to keep the client happy by doing things exactly the way they want them done, and still getting your work done at the same time. There are more ways than one that lead to Rome, is what I say.

When we were done and downstairs to walk to the trash containers there was this lady who was standing there with a necklace in her hand, looking for someone willing to stop and help put it on. She wasn't able to anymore, her hands and all. I had my arms FULL of stuff, but yet I decided to just drop all that I was holding and put that thing on. Two seconds of work, one very happy lady who waved vigorously at me when I stuck my head around the corner of the large dining room looking for someone. I didn't find her but shouted inside that they all have a good meal. That resulted in heads turning, and massive smiles and waves directed my way. That was so cool! *grin*

The afternoon client went by without a hitch as usual, and when I got home I found a letter of the rental company on the floor. It was about my door, once again. A reply to the letter I had sent them. They will once again send the company to me to fix it. This time not to reglue the window, but to scrape out and glue all the door's wooden seams, and then to repaint the entire door.

I called the company and made an appointment for Thursday. They will come over about 30 minutes before the gutter people will. Wait and see on whether they will cancel once again or not, as it is supposed to be raining yet again. If they do, and the painter does as well, then I am free to go to the city to get me some new jeans. The current ones are a bit too tight now, plus that they are showing wear as they are quite a few years old already.

The last thing I did today work related was change my email around. Work hasn't been so smart as to type in my website address and then linking the name Eadwine to me after which to find this blog, and I have set up an email account at gmail on my real name now to kind of close that gap that I have left there.

Not that I mind work finding this place, I haven't shared anything that identifies my clients as such, one would never find out who the clients are or who work is, but still, I rather like some privacy. I have tested by sending emails to myself, and neither my nick is mentioned in the headers anymore, nor is the name of my website. After I get the confirmation email about the mail change from my team leader I am shutting down that old mailbox.

I have been pretty tired all afternoon and evening, so.. before 22:00 I am calling it a night. Another whole day tomorrow and then a new client on Thursday that I need to mentally prepare for. Amazing that I made it through my first work week at all, all those new folk!

and in more ways than one to boot!

This morning I left for the new client, on the way there reminding myself that it is only for three hours, that if it doesn't go ok then I can leave, I can report it in and not have to go anymore.

Unrealistic fears, and they happen all the time when I have to go to a new address. It is less bad when I am called to fill in all of a sudden. I don't like that either, but at least I haven't had all week to worry about it.

I parked my car on the main parking lot about a minute's walk away from the client's home and went to the door. The first impression was an eek at the fact that he hadn't showered or anything yet, but that wasn't his normal stance. He had figured I would come over on Friday instead of today. Mistake there.. ah well.. no biggie.

We spent some time talking, and he talked, and he talked, and he talked, and he talked, and he talked, and he talked, and he went upstairs to take a shower and I took a big breath! Hell, I know -I- talk a lot, but -he-! Good grief my dear mother Mary. And all this within 6 feet of you, and wherever you go he follows like a puppy.

I have had clients that followed me around before, not that they are checking on me, heck no, they are merely liking your company that much and yap your head off. I don't mind, but this one is the worst of the lot!

He came back downstairs, and he talked, and he talked, and he talked, and he talked, and he talked some more, and in the mean time I had to figure out how to get my work done. One thing I have to hand him: his place is clean and when he got back downstairs he was all dressed up and even had a tie on! Much better impression there, at least.. after we wiped the cut wounds on his chin from shaving *giggles* I get to go to him again next week.

What a contrast with the former Thursday morning client! This one will NOT complain about my work material; he even said: "I purchased this and that because of workman's rules you have to live by." *insert my gaping mouth* I just have to get my brain reset to another mode when I go there and make sure I can get some work done while he is yapping. He needs guidance so I might be able to get him to.. say.. vacuum downstairs while I work upstairs. Not all the time, but at least a bit of the time! Anyway, I am sure he is workable with, and when I know him a little while longer I will also know what makes him tick.

But he talks, and he talks, and he talks, and he talks, and he talks, and he talks, and he talks.............

After I managed to leave his house I went to the salary department to get my free hours checked out. For this year I have over 200 hours to take off, and last year left me over with 99 positive hours. Even if I get sacked, they still have to pay me those 99 hours plus a part of the other 101. That is the current status in any case, based on me working only 15 hours a week, and since I am not working that little amount things will grow exponentially.

I had two issues: are those 200 hours really my hours that I can take off? Meaning: don't I have to put some math on it since they are based off of 36hr contracts and I have only 15, so divide by, etc etc. Nope, none of that. And the second issue was the time off itself: can I take out more than 15 hours a week of off time. No I cannot, but there is a way around that. Good.. since I have issues with getting paid only 15 hours!

Let's explain this thing, based on me wanting to take a month off (or rather, 4 weeks). The number of hours I can take off are based on the contract hours, which are 15 a week, 60 per period (a period is 4 weeks). So.. I can only take 60 of those 200 to be paid as vacation pay. I work on average 85 per period PLUS gas money, the total of which is what I need to get by in four weeks or I can't make ends meet. Simple math states I am at least 25 hours plus gas money short in pay when I take a whole period off.

This can be sorted by having extra days paid out outside of the vacation chart. That means those get taxed 33%, but I at least get extra money paid out, which is what I need. So.. say.. to get the same total net amount of money I need to take out those 60 standard ones, and then have another.. say.. 40 paid out in addition. That STILL leaves me with 100 hours worth of time that I can take off this year.

Now.. of course this shows I have a ridiculous amount of time off in this job, however, the hours I get include leave, national holidays that I have to write, funerals and doctors appointments, you name it. NOT sick leave, that comes out of another jar. So.. if you don't get sick much (I don't) and don't have many people dying on you (I haven't had many) then you are one happy camper.

The salary lady that I spoke with is going to calculate for me the number of hours I need to get paid outside the paychart to get to the same net amount per period when I take two, three and four weeks off. This way I have an idea of things.

This whole problem would not be an issue if I had a 21 hour a week contract, because then I could simply take the 21 a week off the regular chart. But since that isn't going to happen anytime soon, with all them changes and stuff going on in health care here, this is the best solution for both me (since I can actually take time off now without having to worry about money) and the employer (who does not like me having 200+ hours now and in a year well over 300 hours; employees are required to take time off for health reasons, inspection issues and all that).

So.. after that was sorted I drove straight home because in about 45 minutes the painter guy for the back door would drop by. I filled the car up and bought a bun at the gas station to save me time.

None too soon either. Around 13:45 I saw the painter car parked outside my door. I went downstairs and opened it, to be met by these two strange guys. "Hi, are you the painter guys? No? The gutter guys then? No?" Turns out they were there for the roof leak that I had reported!

So.. I let those in, showed them the prob and let them back out again. And right as I did that the painter guy was waiting at the door. I let the roof guys out, and let painter guy in. In the mean time this big green thing I mentioned earlier on was being lifted and a guy hoisted up to my roof and the bell rang again, it being the gutter guy this time. So.. I opened the back gate for him and let him on his way again.

Right after I closed the door I went back outside where the door guy was scraping on the door, and the roof guy was on the roof with no harness nothing. I think I told him to be careful about every 30 seconds or so, if not more often. He said that the roofing tile being shifted couldn't have been their fault, but, he shifted it into place anyway, and went back down after telling me to wait and see after the next rainfall on the result. Alright, nothing more I can do anyway either.

As this roof guy was climbing back into his little carrier the gutter guy was already climbing up to the gutter and he saw the drain part was clogged severely, so he cleaned that out proper and then proceeded to hoist up the gutter again. They had already fixed the front side, so that would be ok now.

Then this roof guy suddenly reappeared over the top of my roof and he started putting cement on the chimney. I guess his boss had told him to do that. Not a clue really. Anyway, something done is better than nothing done, and off he went again when he was finished.

I grabbed some garden gear in the mean time and weeded my back yard. I didn't want to leave these men alone and with an open back gate, so I had to stay outside. Might as well do something useful while out there. As I was working on that the gutter guy told me he had done all he could do, and indeed, the drain was running quite nicely even after he had left the premises.

The door guy filled the gapes and possible leaking parts of the door, both inside and out, and then started sanding both sides as well. He told me he would put a layer of ground paint on the inside and proper lacquer on the outside of the door.

The inside bit amazed me, but left me pleasantly surprised since I still have to sand and paint that thing in the summer sometime. No more need to put ground paint on anymore; all I have to do now is put the final coat on after a mild sanding. Great!

I was glad when everyone had finally left and I had to wait for a while before I could close my back door again, the in and outside having been painted and all.

What a day.

eadwine Listening to the music Saturday, March 17th 2007 @ 22:04 - Subscribe
Live365.com with the Celtic Highway channel at the moment, it's great. I haven't listened in a long time as I lost the ability to listen when I moved back in with my dad the first time, and after that I simply forgot it was there. This is a re-finding of a long lost friend, that is for sure. I actually ended up buying a CD of an artist I heard on there first back when. Nicole, who plays Native American music on her flute.

Yesterday morning after work I went off to the city to get me some new clothes, or better: pants. Now.. if you are a woman of less than perfect figure, then you will know what a torment this can be. The pants I tried on at first made me look ridiculous, and put the attention extremely on my upper legs and buttocks. I have this so called pear shape thing going on, multiply that by three or so and you get what I looked like.

Utterly stupid.

The last pair of pants I tried on at the first store fit me, but just barely. Sorry, but when I want tight I will wear my current jeans, thank you very much. I told the girl I'd think about it and left the store to go to a cheapo one.

Disadvantage when you are shopping on your own is that you don't have anyone with you to watch your stuff while you cruise through the various racks. Every time I left the stall I closed the curtain and when looking around I kept glancing over at it to see if no-one came close. That part at least went just fine, and as it was a Friday afternoon and still rather early the main shopping spree consumer group hadn't made an appearance yet. It was nice and quiet in the store.

I tried on various models and most were way too small, or had a shape that made me look like crap. When the legs fit, the waist was way too big, or things were too tight in general. The waist was too low at times (stupid fashion) and at other times I could just as well have worn a paper bag.

By that time I was groaning and would much have preferred to go home, but that wasn't possible. I really needed new pants, and leaving meant having to go back again at another time, and most likely at a more busy time, which is harder for a solo shopper like myself.

I glanced over at the men's section where they have the plain jane straight jeans. No shape in the legs, just straight. When the legs are narrowed down toward the ankles they make the stuff above look bulgy, which is part of the cause of the extreme pear shape.

So.. I tried those on and instantly better fit. It is not perfect either, but hell, it will do just fine. I kept on trying until found a model that fit almost ok, all I needed to do was shorten the legs and put a waistband in because that part was too large. I bought me three of those jeans, and one other pair of pants that I did find in the lady's department. The damage? 17 Euros per jeans, instead of 47 or 57 per!

I washed them on the long cycle right after I got home and hung them to dry. This early evening I grabbed the first to be altered, and put them on. Thank goodness the jeans hadn't shrunk, but even if they had, at least they would have shrunk before the legs were adapted. You can cut fabric off, but you cannot cut it back on.

I shortened the legs and it is now a perfect fit on that part. The rest is a wee bit roomy, but nothing too much or really noticeable, so I will be able to wear those tomorrow to the family visit. The rest I will do at another time, it was stressful enough adapting the first!

Oh yeah.. before I forget.. the Diary-X mug has finally arrived. Yay!

eadwine Some weekend! Monday, March 19th 2007 @ 21:11 - Subscribe
I spent Saturday doing some online things, basically being a bit bored, while working up the courage to start shortening the first of the pants. In the end I picked the shortest of the jeans and put it on, hemmed it anew and put some tailor tacks in the bottom side of the hem. Thank goodness it all went very well and I could hang the pants back on the line to dry more as they weren't fully dry yet.

The fabric was a very heavy denim and the little Singer went through it without trouble. On the 6-layer parts I did slow down a lot to guide things gently. The second leg went much faster as I knew what I had to do. It turned out great. At least I had something to wear for that family gathering without it being tight on me and irritating.

Sunday I woke up early, 7 in the morning. I didn't really want to get out of bed, but I started thinking about all that needed to be done before I was going to be picked up by dad. I got out of bed and went downstairs to turn on the heater and then I got a shock. There was a puddle of water on the floor. I looked up to see where it came from, and immediately went back upstairs to my bedroom and opened the curtains. There was this nice wet spot on the wall over my window and a similar puddle as I had just seen downstairs on the floor.

Even further up in the attic I found the spot rather quickly. I had a nice leaking roof. And not where the workmen had been either. That one with the shifted roofing tile was sorted out, this was a totally different leak. One that went all the way down through the floors. It didn't look so bad on the wall over the window in the bedroom, but still, the consequences were quite dramatic.

I went to the website of the rental company and after some searching found a number that I could call for pressing matters outside of office hours and decided to give that a shot. At this time it was 07:30ish. The call was answered by this nice man who took my address and phone data and told me I would be called by someone shortly.

At this time I had already contacted my dad and gotten dressed as well, knowing that people would be coming over this morning or early this afternoon to fix things. Dad came over around 9:30 to help me with calls/repair folks, should I be in the shower at the time.

After various call backs by different people I was finally called by the contractor and they told me they'd be there in 15 minutes. By this time it was around 10:00.

The guys showed and I took them upstairs where the leak was. You could see it dripping through and the younger of the two stepped out the window and went on the roof, shifting tiles as he made his way up and then back down. They found it fairly quickly and fixed it with a lead slab.

Turned out that, likely due to the gutter fixing, another gutter part had shifted. This part is sitting invisible under the roofing tiles so the repair guy that came over earlier couldn't have seen it happen. It was just a case of bad luck there.

I left the towels and bucket where they were, just in case, took the shower and then we left for the family gathering after all. I was pretty tired throughout though, not having slept enough during the weekend, and even now I am feeling the consequences with a nice headache. I took a second ibuprofen not too long ago, hopefully that will kill off most of it. After posting I am off to bed.

When I got back the wall paper had dried, and there was no more puddle to be found, thank goodness, and even this morning, after having removed the towels before I went to bed, still nothing. Looks like that one is fixed! Whew alright, since I do have wooden floors after all, not just talking about the carpeting but also the floors themselves which aren't made of concrete; they don't handle prolonged fluid drips well.

eadwine Embroidery, but then by hand Tuesday, March 20th 2007 @ 21:12 - Subscribe
That is what I have ordered after I got home from helping my dad hang his modem in the utility closet. He needs to put it there because when the new phone line decides to become active.. whenever that may me, if it ever does.. he needs to hook the line up in there and into the modem. He's gotten rid of the clutter on his desk too now, having the modem in a different spot. For me, my modem hangs on my wall next to the monitor. I can easily see that way what it does. Ever said I was a control freak about computer related stuff? I must have *grins*

The reason I got to ordering an embroidery package is simple: my client got me into it. She was tired of reading books to stimulate her brain cells, and she joined the handiwork club at the elderly home. She was working on some rag and making patterns on it with embroidery thread, and as she was working it gave me an idea. I need some things on my walls but every time I see something that would apply I don't much like it. Too big, too small, too.. standard. Yuck.

I started searching and found something that I liked and that I could start off with. Lanarte's The Four Seasons by Marjolein Bastin, which are four separate projects that I can do one by one, and then frame and hang as a group.

They weren't expensive at all, and it is a complete pack, so.. for a starting point that was a nice buy. I could have gone to a store for it, but I know I will not find exactly what I like that way, add to that store people hovering over me, and having it delivered after an online purchase is more often cheaper than going into a store and buying them off the rack. Hopefully it's in stock and will get here soon.

When I got home there were a few things on my doormat, amongst those a letter from my health insurance company. Turns out I am getting my no claim back. 255 Euros straight into my bank account, to be transferred by April first. And no that is no joke. I thought they had abolished the system altogether, but apparently the 2006 part is still being transferred. Well.. you won't hear me complaining about it, that is for sure. It can go nicely to my savings account, as far as I am concerned.

Last thing of interest I did was call the rental company. The contact person I had been dealing with for the past few weeks, starting with the door and the shower drain. I told him things had been fixed and I also told him about the leak that I had had last Sunday. When I mentioned the fact that I had found a puddle in the living room he gasped and realized that it was in fact quite a serious leak. They should know by now that I don't call in for a mere fart. When I say it is serious, trust me, it is serious.

He told me that the next thing that was up was painters for the outside and folks reworking the cement between the bricks on the rest of the house. And it was important that the paint people did not come over and work before the cement people did. Ah.. good to know! I told him I would keep an eye on that and if the paint people DO show up first, to let them call the rental agency, because that of course is no use; their work will be ruined by the violent removal of old cement.

I can give it to you on a piece of paper, watch this: the painters will be here before the cement people.

There, now it is on record, wait and see and hope this one premonition of mine does NOT come true!

How to tell if you're Dutch - by Bas Suverkropp

If you're Dutch.....

* You're familiar with Sesamstraat, Big Brother, Johnnie en Rijk,Youp van het Hek, Star Trek, Derrick, de Fabeltjeskrant, Baywatch, Goede tijden slechte tijden, Magnum P.I., Married with Children, and Tatort. In general, you watch Dutch soaps and sitcoms, German crime series, and all kinds of English and American series.

* You know how soccer is played. Of coarse, you call this sport football. If you're male, you can argue intricate points about its rules. You've heard of American football but don't know how it works. The only sport that can equally arouse your passion is speed skating.

* You consider four weeks of vacation a year normal, and in many professions count on a 36-hour working week.

* Most likely you are not religious, or religious in a very loose way. There are people in your country who have very strict religions. You consider this either quaint or somewhat scary. Except for some Jehovah's witnesses or Mormons knocking on your door, nobody will ask you whether you believe in Heaven.

* You think of McDonald's, Burger King, KFC etc. as cheap food.

* You own a telephone and a TV. Your place is heated in the winter and has its own bathroom. You do your laundry in a machine. You don't kill your own food. You don't have a dirt floor. You eat at a table, sitting on chairs.

Got herring?

* You don't consider insects, dogs, cats, monkeys, or guinea pigs to be food. Raw herring is a well-liked delicacy, though.

* New houses have bathrooms with a toilet, old houses have separate toilets and bathrooms. A bathtub is not uncommon, but certainly not standard.

* Most utilities are in the process of changing from state-run or monopolies to privately run. While you welcome lower prices for phone calls, you are suspicious whether private companies really look out for their customers.

* You expect, as a matter of course, that the phones will work. Getting a new phone is routine.

* The train system is good, although trains may be late. Trains are about as fast as cars. There are inland flights, but the chance you've ever used one is close to zero. If you are between the ages of four and eighty, you own at least one bicycle and use it, too.

* You need to be 18 to get a driver's license. You have to take paid lessons and cannot practice on your own. This makes getting a drivers license very expensive.

Where the Brits go wrong

* You find a multi-party system natural, and can hardly imagine another fair way to run a country. You expect your country to be ruled by a coalition of two or three major parties, not by a single party. It would scare you to give one point of view so much power. You think consensus is more important in politics than rhetoric. You expect politicians to be inefficient at times, and sometimes stupid, but you don't expect them to get into politics for self-enrichment. (A minister recently resigned because of faulty declarations made back when he was a city mayor.) You find two-party systems (like the UK's or the USA's) unfair and restricting.

* You see no contradiction in having both a democratic government and a queen who is head of state.

* Socialism is OK, if not taken to extremes. Undiluted capitalism scares you-- you expect the government to protect you from corporate greed.

* Communists are 1) students in the sixties who wanted to change the world; 2) some old farmers in the north of your country who still vote for the minuscule communist party; 3) tough guys who did their patriotic duty against the Germans during the occupation.

* Race is a complicated issue. Where people come from is about as important as their skin color. You consider people with Indonesian ancestors Dutch.

* You think most problems could be solved if only people would put aside their prejudices and work together. You also think that the Dutch people are better at this than other people. You think EU, NATO, and the United Nations are a Good Thing. Sure, there might be some corruption and inefficiency involved, especially in the EU, but how are international problems ever going to be solved if nations don't work together?

* You take a strong court system for granted, even if you don't use it. You know that if you went into business and had problems with a customer, partner, or supplier, you could take them to court.

Why foreigners will never learn Dutch

* You speak English, at least somewhat. After all, you are exposed to at least two hours of it daily if you listen to pop songs, TV and movies. You also know enough German to get by, and watch German television. If anybody starts talking in broken or accented Dutch to you, you will reply in English. Only the most determined English-speaking foreigner has a change of learning Dutch in your country.

* You take it on faith that nobody abroad (except in Belgium) speaks your language, and are amazed if anybody has bothered to learn it.

* An income tax rate of 60% is high, but you think that people who earn a lot of money should pay high taxes. You don't believe in a trickle-down effect.

* School is free through high school (at least, it's an option, even if you went to private school); university isn't. You expect the state to help you pay for university, if your parents can't.

* University is (normally, and excluding graduate study) five years long.

* Mustard comes in jars or glasses that can be reused as drinking glasses. Shaving cream comes in cans. Milk comes in cardboard boxes or (rarely) bottles.

* The date comes first: 5/5/45. (And you know what happened on that date.)

* The decimal point is a comma. Certainly not a dot.

* A billion is a million times a million. A thousand times a million is a miljard.

Still sore about the bikes

* World War II was the biggest thing that happened to your country in the 20th century. Your poor, neutral country was quickly overrun by the Nazis, who behaved badly, deported the Jews and stole all the bicycles. It was a time when the country came together and did what was right, except for some collaborators who are still shunned. You were liberated by the Canadians. The war showed that neutrality didn't work, so now you depend on NATO for your security. Anybody born before 1940 may be asked whether he or she was 'right' or 'wrong' during the occupation. If you were 'wrong' (i.e. a Nazi collaborator), chances for a political career are zero.

* You expect marriages to be made for love, not arranged by third parties. You marry at city hall, with a nice ceremony and speech from the civil servant who marries you. After that, you may also have a church wedding, but this has no legal status. You have two to four witnesses at your wedding-- friends or siblings. And, naturally, a man gets only one wife at a time, and vice versa. Homosexual weddings are still forbidden, but homosexual couples can enter a contract that gives them all the legal duties and rights of a wedded couple, except for the right of adoption. Often, you have already lived together for a longer time before marriage, but you usually wed before you have kids. [note by eadwine: this has recently changed and homosexual couples can now legally marry]

* If a man has sex with another man, that's his own business. He is still a homosexual, though.

* With most people you know, you use the informal je form; the honorific u is used in more formal situations, like speaking to older people or to businesspeople from another company.

My face is up here, sir

* If you're a woman, going topless at the beach is an option, but usually restricted to the young and small-breasted. There are nude beaches, and while you may not visit them, you don't think it unusual for people to take their children to one.

* A pricy hotel room has a private bath, a cheap one has a bathroom in the corridor.

* Dubbing is for kids. All movies and TV series are subtitled, except for the Dutch ones.

* You are shocked if anyone offers you a bribe, or asks for one.

* If a politician has been cheating on his wife, you consider this bad form, but no reason for him to resign, unless he's from some conservative religious party.

* For a politician to show off his wife or kids during an election campaign is ridiculous, since you don't understand what do they have to do with his work. You don't even know whether most party leaders are married, divorced, single or whatever.

* Credit cards are accepted in many shops, though, but they are mostly for yuppies and snobs, and you don't have one. You pay cash in shops, or use a debit card.

* A company can't fire just anybody it wants. For this reason, many companies hire temporary workers through an employment agency.

* You don't eat very much bacon, and if you do, it's as part of an omelet.

* Labor Day is the first of May, but it is not a holiday. There's no surf music like Dutch surf music.

* You've probably seen Turks Fruit, Flodder, All Stars, De Lift and Soldaat van Oranje. If you're under forty, add Lang Leve de Koningin and most Disney movies. Otherwise, add Fanfare, Ciske de Rat en De Aanslag.

* You know Andre Hazes, Doe Maar, Volumia, Rene Froger, De Dijk en Golden Earring. If not, you know the Dutch Swing College Band, the Blue Diamonds, the Kilima Hawaiians, and Liesbeth List.

* You count on excellent medical treatment. You know you're not going to die of cholera or other Third World diseases. You expect very strong measures to be taken to save very ill babies or people in their eighties. You think dying at 65 would be a tragedy. You take it for granted that health care insurance is universal, and even grant illegal immigrants the right to basic medical assistance.

* You went over Dutch and European history in school, not much Russian, Chinese, or American. You couldn't name the last four wars that your country was involved in.

* You expect the military to contribute to peacekeeping operations, not get involved in politics. Having successfully led a military operation is not an advantage in a political career. You used to have conscription, but now it's an all-volunteer force. You have never heard of the names of the heads of the services.

* Your country came into being by liberating itself from the Spanish, and has been occupied by the French (no hard feelings) and the Germans (lots of hard feelings).

* You're used to a wide variety of choices for almost anything you buy.

* You use the metric system. The only exception is that a pond (pound) is half a kilogram, and an ons (ounce) is 100 grams.

* You are not a farmer.

What? They give Joost Swarte to kids?

* Comics typically appear as hardbound books (albums). Comics sometimes but not always appear first in specialized comics magazines. All newspapers and most magazines carry at least one comic, too. Comics are mainly Dutch, Belgian and French in origin. Unless you are a fan, you consider comics something for children, or akin to watching TV soaps, except for Olivier B. Bommel, which is regarded as High Literature.

* The people who appear on the most popular talk shows are mostly entertainers and politicians. Authors are seen on TV too, to promote their books.

* You drive on the right side of the road. You stop at red lights even if nobody's around. If you're a pedestrian and cars are stopped at a red light, you will fearlessly cross the street in front of them.

* You consider the Volkswagen Beetle to be a small to medium sized car.

* The police are armed, but not with submachine guns.

* The biggest meal of the day is in the evening.

* The nationality people most often make jokes about is the Belgians.

* There are parts of the city you where you walk carefully at night.

* You feel that the government is a bit out of touch with the citizens, sometimes.

* You wouldn't expect both inflation and unemployment to be very high (say, over 15%) at the same time. High unemployment may occur, high inflation never.

* You don't care very much what family someone comes from.

* The normal thing, when a couple dies, is for their estate to be divided equally between their children.

* You think of opera and ballet as somewhat elite entertainments. It's likely you don't see that many plays, either.

Peace on Earth, let's just try it / And shouldn't you be on a diet?

* Christmas is in the winter. Unless you're Muslim or Jewish, you spend it with your family, and put up a tree. Presents are given at December 5th, St. Nicolas day, and you include satirical rhymes where you gently point out people's bad habits.

* Although there are traces of the major religious divisions that your country had in the past, the church has no power to speak of. There is a state church where the coronation takes place, but this has no practical consequences.

* You know the capitals of Europe, but you know the leaders only for the larger countries. The only US state you can pinpoint is probably California. [note from eadwine: that is not the only one I can point out!]

* You are familiar with Lucky Luke, Asterix, Guust Flater (Gaston Lagaffe) and Kuifje (Tintin), but you aren't familiar with Spiderman, Sailor Moon, Mafalda, Ralph König or Judge Dredd, although all these comics have been translated into Dutch.

* You've left a message at the beep.

* Taxis are generally operated by locals, who tend to drive a bit too fast.

* Unemployment benefits are your right, you've paid for them after all, and of course people who don't have any money should get welfare-- should they starve or what? But you also think that there are a lot of people cheating the system.

* If you want to be a doctor, you need to get a doctoraal (masters) degree first. Bachelors degrees don't exist. [note from eadwine: yep they do, writer got that wrong]

* There aren't that many lawyers, and you will need them only if you go to court, not for a business deal.

The trouble with the neighbors

* You don't really know what to think about your neighbors the Belgians. In general you think they are happier, less intelligent, more corrupt, and simultaneously more formal and informal than the Dutch. They speak Dutch, but in a funny way, unless they speak French. Their beer is the best. You get along well with them. A good thing about Belgians is that they are not arrogant. (They think the Dutch are arrogant and stingy, and make jokes about them).

* Germany and the Germans are overbearing neighbors. You get along well with them, but Germans are known to be arrogant, which you are always alert to point out them. The war is not forgotten, and most people have elderly family members who were killed, deported or otherwise mistreated by the Nazis. Germany never returned the bicycles it stole, either. Even the most politically correct can make jokes or disparaging remarks about Germans and get away with it. Your greatest dream is beating Germans in the World Cup finals.

* France is a country that doesn't understand your soft drugs policy. This is arrogant. It is a great place for summer vacation, and you like their cheese and wine.

* The USA provides most of your entertainment, as well as technical innovation. If a non-American explains to you that something is better in the US than in the Netherlands, you will explain that American ideas will not work in the Dutch context. If an American tells you things are better in the US, you just think that he's arrogant. Apart from always telling you that things are better in the US, Americans are nice people. Your country has more money invested in the US than any other country in the world. [note from eadwine: and I wish they KNEW this too!]

* Japan is a faraway country that produces cars and video recorders. If Japan is on the news, it is probably because they still haven't apologized for the mistreatment of Dutch citizens during World War II. You have never seen or heard a Japanese comic, pop song or movie.

* You don't think much about the UK. They produce pop music and football hooligans. Our Royal House shows how things should be done. Their Royal House shows how things shouldn't be done.

Your Highness, I want to be called Kuifje Kilima

* You think it ridiculous that any private person would want to have a firearm. The government should protect you against such people.

* You think it normal that any woman who wants to can get an abortion, and that sex education and contraceptives are freely available. It's nothing out of the ordinary to see naked breasts on TV and in advertisements.

* You have never heard of Creationism. [note from eadwine: I have, not that I believe it, but that is another matter]

* Your country used to have colonies but you rarely think about this.

* You think development aid is a Good Thing. Sending money for arms isn't. You think human rights should be most important in foreign aid decisions.

* Journalists may write about everything but usually avoid the private life of public people. They only talk about private life (I'm not talking about the gutter press here) when people choose to make their private life public.

* You think people shouldn't make themselves more important than they are, we are all normal people after all.

* Having a Royal House and a Queen is a Good Thing. Why, you're not sure.

* Changing your name is very difficult. It takes a lot of paperwork, you need to convince the authorities that you have a good reason to change your name, and you need the Queen's permission (yes, really!)

* You can drink alcohol at age 16. IDs are not often asked for.

* If male, you are uncircumcised, unless you are Muslim or Jewish.

* You were born in a hospital or at home (these are about equally likely) and were delivered by a midwife, general practitioner or gynecologist. Unless she had a cesarean, your mother did not take anesthesia during the delivery. Your father was most likely present at your birth.

eadwine Dictation entry Saturday, March 24th 2007 @ 08:28 - Subscribe
This is a diary entry written entirely using a speech recognition program. There were a few things that I needed to correct manually, but overall it works quite well. The one downside is that I have to use it in windows plain install; in virtual box the system freezes. I haven’t been writing much lately because I’ve been fiddling with my install, trying to see if upgrading windows in virtual box would work. What I found is that the system actually runs slower after the upgrades. I guess this has something to do with the memory allocation. That may also explain why the dictation program freezes. In any case, I will make an attempt to write this entry through speech alone. I doubt it will completely work, but it is fun to try nonetheless.

I have been checking every day to see if my roof still leaked, but I think I’m in the clear on that one. It hasn’t left any damage on the wallpaper, only a tiny section has come loose from the surface. Nothing that can’t be repaired. As for the floor, it simply has to dry out, slowly but surely.

I have also been spending a lot of time at my dad’s, trying to help him out with his phone connection. His provider has not been following up on what they’ve written him in letters. His modem arrived late, the welcome letter containing his username and password also arrived late, and it actually didn’t arrive until I requested it using a form on their website. He has also received a phone letter, a letter containing the username and password for his internet voice calling system. In the welcome letter it stated that he would have the phone connection after two days of activating the account. However in that letter with the phone information it stated something quite different. The line would not be activated until at least five days after he had registered. Which meant that he would be several days without a phone. Needless to say he did not like that much.

When he finally received the phone letter he went to activate his account he could not, rather he was able to activate the account but it didn’t work. He called the help desk, and they told him he had to upgrade the firmware. However the upgrade firmware was the same version already installed in the modem. I Googled around and found that there was a even newer firmware version available from the manufacturer and installed that. That is when shit really hit the fan. The configuration screen asked for a proxy, which was data we did not have. I had to cancel out of it and try to reinstall the old firmware. Of course that also went wrong, and despite numerous resets, the modem still would not install the software. We were about to pull our hair out. At least my dad still had his old modem, and after we connected that at least he had his internet back. After I left my dad kept trying and finally managed to reinstall the old firmware, and consequently also managed to setup his internet again. Then he could retry to install the phone service, which to this day is not working correctly. The helpdesk has helped him go over various settings, and found nothing wrong with his configuration. The problem then had to be on their end.

That same day I also had to visit a friend of my dad. He was connected using the same isp, only a different line provider. He had internet, but like my dad no phone. To make a long story short, we managed to activate his connection today, but not thanks to the helpdesk. We called the store where he ordered his internet and spoke with someone who could give us the right sip (or something) settings. It turned out that the cd settings were all wrong. Of course that is some way to make money for the isp; people will have to call in to get the problem solved. At 70 cents a minute this is easy money. In any case, after activating his phone account, the connection worked normally for him. No periods of inactivity or getting the busy signal like my dad is getting. Sometimes it works, most times it glitches. This has pissed him off so badly that he has contacted his legal insurance company. The isp has promised to check on their settings, and hopefully that will fix things over the weekend, but if they haven’t further action will be taken.

It’s a long story that spans multiple days, and multiple visits to my dad. One thing I did find out is that I am quite handy with this sort of stuff. My dad seems to consider me a whiz kid at this. I told him, when he asked me to go to his friend, that I was very good at mucking things up as well as fixing them. No guarantees. Yet he still wanted me to go and thank goodness I did.

When I was not working on any isp systems, I was at work of course. Wednesday went by normally and the morning client told me that the window washers had come by. She was very happy about that, and they also ended up doing the neighbor’s windows. I did see something strange in the afternoon. The trees in the street that my client looks out on were all being chopped down. The reason they did this was due to sewer maintenance that they needed to perform. Now the street is so empty, without those 50 year old trees. Quite saddening to tell the truth. The whole character of the street is gone, you can see some housing that was previously hidden, and it just looks cold.

Thursday I was less nervous than last week. At least I now knew the client and a big part of the stress had gone because of that. He was still as chatty as last week, but he was less nervous than last time and he didn’t follow me around as closely. We made his bed together and I also performed a special task: cleaning out his shower head. A lot of calcium had accumulated and it was clogging up the holes. When I showed him what I had done he was very happy, and I am fairly sure he tried the shower that same evening. I saw a note there that said I could stay for a while, which is a good thing. He does not have to get used to a new helper and I don’t have to get used to a new client. Time flew by and before I knew it I was on my way home.

On Friday I took along the bag that I had bought for my client’s grandson last week. When I arrived I immediately saw that my client was not feeling well, she had probably gotten the flu. The plan was to do some intensive cleaning in the shower but that was thrown out the window and instead I was sent out to go and buy us some fish. While I was there I received a call from the friend of my dad. He had reset his modem and asked me to come help him configure his phone settings. I also received a call from the office asking me if I was ok with working a four hour morning. This would be the Thursday morning I had just gotten that new client on.

She also told me something disturbing: my Tuesday afternoon client had gotten a stroke, he was found in his bathroom. Apparently he had just taken or was about to take a shower. He had been lying there for a long time and had caught pneumonia on top of it. We’re not sure whether he will ever be able to return home, as it is not clear what damage his brain has suffered. I was quite shocked to hear this news, this was a man in nearly perfect health save for the lack of eyesight and trouble walking. I would never have expected him to suffer from a stroke. Goes to show how something can go wrong in a body and hit you when you least expect it. That makes three clients that are sick; one of them has already been admitted to the elderly home, one of them is now in hospital, and the third one is hanging in there still at home. I don’t know how long that will last though. He seems to be improving, but every time I am there I keep a close eye on him, considering that fall he took two weeks ago.

I told my team leader that I did not object to having a four hour morning, but that she had to make sure that the client was ok with it. After all we are just getting used to each other, and he had gotten a promise that I could work there for a while. I am pretty sure that he will not like changes, but maybe he will agree to be moved to Tuesday afternoon. I don’t know what will happen, it all depends on that one client, and hopefully he will be able to return home. However, I think the chances of that are almost nil. It is more likely to receive the message that he has passed away. I really like this guy, he is different. He is the one guy that insisted on me calling him by his first name rather than mr. so and so.

After work I went to the office to give them my client sheets and then left for the friend. As I described above the issue was the isp that had given him the wrong information. It was sorted in an hour and I was able to go home. When home I decided to give up my ownership for a yahoo group. I have run the group for army women for quite some time and it is time to throw in the towel. I have asked for volunteers to take it over but no one has stepped forward yet. I might just have to sign it over to a random person, but I will give it a while longer.

I spent quite some time that afternoon configuring my dictation software. I went through all the training sessions and noticed that after each session speech recognition had improved. I just have to make sure that I pronounce things very clearly, if I do that the recognition accuracy is close to 95 percent. I still have to improve errors by hand, and certain words seem to not be in its dictionary. Words of the human anatomy, swear words, and other slang that is commonly used. Not that big of an issue, but at times you would like to use those words when you are in a chat.

Well, this has become quite a lengthy entry. Of course it is easier to just keep talking instead of typing. Before you know if you have said much more than you would normally type, and needless to say, it is much faster than typing. It does take some getting used to to dictate your diary entry. You seem to think more about what you want to say and how you’re going to say it. Of course having to take into account that a speech recognition engine is listening makes you more aware of how you say it. It kind of feels like when you are watching a Star Trek episode, where they can dictate things to the computer and also use voice commands to operate things. This voice recognition things still has a long way to go, but it is much better than a few years ago when I tried RealSpeak and Dragon Naturally Speaking. The latter has grown so expensive that it cannot be used anymore by the average person. Having tested dictation 2005 which is the software I am using now, I must say I like it a lot. It installs all the needed things automatically and doesn’t bother you with other software that needs to be installed. It installs everything in that one go. The price is reasonable as well, if it wasn’t for the fact that I don’t run windows as my main system, and if it wasn’t for the fact that it freezes in virtual box, I would buy it.

After getting to bed really late last night I had to get up early today, not because I wanted to, but because the neighbors were making such a racket. At some point in time when I see my neighbor I will talk to her about this. It’s not something I will just go and visit her for but I will bring it up in common conversation sometime. The same thing happened last week on a Sunday, and it was irritating enough then. I really do not wish to see this evolve into a regular pattern.

Though I really like the weekends at times I have no clue what to do with them. I’ve updated the virtual box program, and tried to reinstall the dictation program again. Unfortunately I didn’t have much luck, it froze on this install as well. I’ve taken some action this time though, I’ve written the developer of the software and explained the situation. I can only hope that they will receive the e-mail and that they will do something with it. It would be fun to be able to receive an update of the virtual box program and find out that the dictation program in it works.

I have received a letter from the salary administration of my employer with in there the calculation of my hours vacation time. It turns out that if I want to take three weeks off I will still have enough hours left to do it again. It’s a good feeling to know that. Now if only I had something to do TO take three weeks off... I am not going to do that just because, are you kidding? I would be bored stiff. I’ve had ten days off during Christmas, which was fun, but after about four days or five days I had just about had it and was very ready to go back to work.

Speaking of which, I am actually glad that despite the fact that my clients are dropping away my team leader is putting the effort in to fill up my hours. I was afraid with all the changes that this would not happen and that I would fall back to fifteen hours a week. It’s one less thing to worry about that is for sure. All that I need to do now is wait for more clients that fit into the second class category; the more we have of those the better, for the more we have of those the more workers are needed.

As a side note, I am removing my spam messages from my e-mail account, and am rather amused by what I read. I do not open the messages but the subject lines are humorous enough. What to think of this one: “be a man”. Unfortunately that is something I cannot do since it is physically impossible. What about this one: “he caught me kissing his best friend”. Well sorry but that is your own fault, I am not going to help you out of that shitty hole. Or this one: “increase both you and your partner’s pleasure”. I guess my dildo will like that one! Spam is so useless, don’t you think?

I am still waiting for responses to my wanting to change the ownership of the army group. I fear that I have to forcefully sign it over after Monday has passed. I really don’t want to be involved with the group that much longer, not having any connection left with the army at all. I could do this for a long while still but I’m kind of tired of keeping it into account all the time. We’ll see what happens after Monday has gone and went.

As far as my dad is concerned, he is still having problems with his phone service. I have explained to him how to auto fill out forms on the web using mozilla because every time that his phone connection craps out he wants to send them a complaint through their complaint web form. It saves him a little bit of time every time. He will give them a week to clean up their act, and if they still haven’t he is going to sue. Hopefully he will be more lucky with that.

Well here we are again, writing another diary entry. I find myself booting to Windows to dictate my entries. I’ve tried to check in the logs of the virtual box program to see if I could find something on the freezes, but there’s nothing there. Ah well then we just have to wait and see. I have just gotten lazy with this diary entry typing thing, speech being so much faster.

The one downside is that I don’t have access to all my programs when I am in Windows, but I’ve solved this by downloading an RSS reader, Omea, which after a lot of configuring (boy does it have a lot of options!) does what I want it to do. I have tried an online reader, but those were seriously slow loading at times, so I moved away from those and installed this software. At least I can keep up with my feeds while I’m writing an entry.

My dad’s internet problems are still not solved, he actually gained one. In order to get telephony service from his isp he had to cancel his account at the regular phone company. Then this isp had to activate the line again in a different manner, and the phone company charges them for taking the line away from them. These charges are being shifted to the isp’s client. This is an added amount of 9.95 each month, which is quite something. Needless to say he hadn’t seen this when he signed up for the service, and they don’t even advertise with it. Only after an extensive search on the internet can you find out about it. There is a mention about this in the terms of use, but there is never a specific amount stated. On the overview that he got from the isp after he signed up it isn’t mentioned either, and this is after all a monthly fee, something that is not easy to hide come billing time. This case comes very close to being misleading, if it is not that already, which can be enough grounds to terminate the contract. Of course the friend of my dad didn’t know about this either, my dad mailed him the webpage with the info and told him to sit down. I wonder what his response will have been.

Today we changed to summertime, and that has gotten my system all out of whack during the day. Right now things are better again considering it is dark at the usual hour, but the whole afternoon I thought it was one hour earlier that it really was. I am sure that by tomorrow this whole thing will be sorted out, I just hope that my clients will also have realized the time change. If not I will be on the first one’s doorstep at 08:00, and that will be hilarious. I remember one time when we had a similar change. The clock had to be moved one hour backward in time, and we switched it the wrong way, forward. This resulted in my ex husband being at work at seven, instead of at nine.

Anyway enough talking, it is time for me to go to bed.

The morning arrived way too early, and as I drove to work I told myself that I would not get my nerves wracked up by the client. I am sure it is completely unintentional, but she always makes me feel like her other helper is better. Today however that was not the case. I don’t think she mentioned her even once, so that all went calmer for me. She showed me her new bed, and also mentioned that she didn’t have fitting bed linen. That wasn’t too smart of her considering she purchased a bed outside the normal range. It is 120cm wide instead of the usual 90 or 100, and I suggested to her to use the other comforter, the one she already had, but she didn’t like the idea of things hanging over the side too much. Oh well, that is her choice. I would have changed the comforter around, a nice overhang of that thing is nice and comfy indeed.

After I was done there I went to the store to get me some groceries. On Monday that is not a hard job, pretty much everyone is still at work and nobody’s interested in doing groceries at that time, which is noon. You can buy the stuff you need and go straight to the cash register and pay. The weather was wonderful which enabled me and my second client to go for a nice walk. We also went by a store where I bought myself a bucket and a wring mop; I was tired of having to bend over every time that I cleaned the floor to wring out the rag, and this wring mop thing will do the job just fine. I have used it already and mopped both upstairs and downstairs, which was something that I hadn’t done in a long time. It sure shows as the floor is now an even color again and the water was colored an intense gray. At least all the dirty footprints are gone, those that all those workmen had left. This Thursday new ones will be added when the heater maintenance people show up, but those I can quickly mop away now that I have the right tool. Once I was done I put the mop and the bucket outside and was amazed by the attention it got from the flies. Likely something in that cleaning stuff that I use. *shrug*

When I got home there was an e-mail waiting for me from my team leader, stating that things for Thursday have remained the same and tomorrow afternoon I can go to another address. I have been there before, last summer, and at that time the client actually had to leave. She had however forgotten to notify the office which resulted in me getting a paid afternoon off. I distinctly remember that day, and the lady. At least I know what I can expect, and already knowing this lady somewhat makes it easier for me.

Nothing much happened this day other than what I just wrote, I guess you can call this day rather boring, but I like boring at times, especially on Mondays.

I've been feeling a bit off kilter today. This morning the first thing I had to do was sign over the ownership of the army yahoo group that I had run for several years to someone who didn't really want to have it since she didn't have the time.

No-one else freaking responded! I sent private off the group mails as well and none of the folks responded. I was appalled by that, and disappointed. I have signed it over to her after all and then unsubscribed from the group. I did manage to write a nice bye bye note and a sorry note to the one person who got force fed. I know she won't like it, but I really cannot be bothered anymore. I am leaving it up to her to find a new group leader, and otherwise it won't be on my shoulders.

I can just get irritated by this. Back when I was a moderator and when the owner asked me to take over I did it without even blinking. No problem at all. Too bad no-one would do the same for me. In any case, that was my last tie to the US army, and I don't want to hear a single thing army related anymore unless it is about Bush being stupid again so I can bitch about that. *mutter* It just pisses me off. However, small irritations are not worth getting worked up over, so I'll leave it be.

I had also received an email from the embroidery site, they apparently had forgotten to mention my order number on the bill, and apologized for that along with sending me a correct bill. I already paid for the thing with all the info that was needed, so it really wasn't necessary to get me a new copy, but.. oh well. Kind of them to think about it and correct the error. I mailed them back and asked them how long it would roughly take for the package to get here and they told me that it wasn't in stock, however it was a highly popular kit and it should be here in about two weeks or so. One week has already passed, so it should be two weeks tops in this case, as of now.

The morning went just fine, and I actually managed to get that client to laugh by a remark of mine. Amazing, for that one client at least. I also told her about ordering the kit and she was very complimenting about the Lanarte ones. Nice, very fine and detailed, she said, and when I mentioned that I had seen complete flower field huge ones she was mightily impressed with it. I will take the kit along to her when I have it in my possession.

When I was done and we went downst
