Beneath the 2008 Hummer H3’s gritty expression comes a 5.3-liter V-8 engine. Hummer engineers have propped in a Chevy Silverado V-8 and calling the resulting monster the H3 Alpha. Its powertrain parts constitute 259 ponies with an aluminum block. Maximum torque rating revs up to 317 pound-feet mated with a four-speed automatic gearbox allowing the H3 Alpha to haul up to 6,000 pounds and a four-wheel drive.

This is the second in a series of Alpha models churning off the H2 and H1. The H3’s not actually designed for a large V-8 but GM reconstructed the H3’s front end to accept its 5.3-lite V-8. The front end is also fitted with a new steering rack which according to Hummer “delivers a better steering feel and off-road capability”. The H3 Alpha is the first Hummer to be engineered in a juxtaposed venture with GM’s performance division.

Among the Hummer H3 Alpha’s vehicle alterations include a cast-iron front differential, new engine mounts, retuned suspension 16-inch chrome wheels and rims and a 4.10:1 rear axle ratio.

Like all 2008 H3 editions, safety components are upgraded for most road users’ convenience. It consists of side curtain bags, stability and traction control, tire pressure monitoring system. H3 Alpha owners can opt for both a rearview camera and a navigation system.

The new model will be showcased at the 2007 New York Auto Show.
