Cummins Inc., manufacturer of power generation equipments and power systems has recently launched the company’s strongest, cleanest, quietest, and best-in-class 2007 Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, according to the company.
Cummins has increased the horsepower and torque output of the poplar 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel engine that is exclusively installed in the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickup trucks as a standard powertrain parts. Not only Cummins improved the power output for the engine, the company also revamped the engine enabling it to achieve the lowest emissions for the advanced 2010 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) NOx (nitrous oxide) emission standard.
“The application of the right technology on the Dodge Ram is an extension of the joint clean diesel development work Cummins and DaimlerChrysler have performed together for nearly two decades.” said Cummins President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Loughrey.
“The new best-in-class Cummins Turbo Diesel and the Dodge Ram will provide the strongest, cleanest, quietest solution for heavy-duty pickup truck customers,” he added.
Although the torque and horsepower output of the new Cummins Turbo Diesel engine has been increased, Cummins said the engine still achieves 50% noise reduction, thanks to its reduced combustion noise, a low-noise VGT, and optimized fuel timing, . To achieve the lowest emissions for the 2010 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) NOx standard, Cummins used different technological methods such as:
- Combining advanced in-cylinder technologies, including a Bosch flexible 1800-bar High Pressure Common Rail fuel system with Cummins next-generation cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT™)
- Advanced exhaust aftertreatment technology system that includes a close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst, a NOx adsorber catalyst and a combined diesel oxidation/particulate filter.
- Incorporating a proprietary closed crankcase ventilation (CCV) system to eliminate crankcase fumes and “driveway drips.”
Watch out for the new Cummins Turbo Diesel engine when it goes under the hood of Dodge Ram 2500 and 2500 heavy-duty pickup trucks.
