Nissan Motor Co. has done it again with a new engine up their working sleeves. The new engine technology delivers power, fuel efficiency and low emissions while matched by Nissan’s newly developed Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) and continuous valve timing control (C-VTC).
Let’s take a peak at its high-powered engine performance:
• Higher fuel efficiency - the system controls air intake at the intake-valve instantly before it enters the combustion chamber. In the low and medium rpm ranges, intake-valve lift is kept low to reduce camshaft function and caters to a whole fuel efficiency improvement.
• Better response - controlling air intake at the intake-valves progresses speed response by allowing more dense air into the cylinders from the start of the acceleration.
• More Power - low rpm range: intake-valves open for a shorter period, preventing blowback of the air-fuel mixture and advancing torque. High rpm range: greater intake-valve lift allows increased air intake to deliver greater torque outputs.
• Cleaner emissions - intake-valve timing is optimized on startup when the engine is still cool to rapidly boost the temperature of exhaust gases and more quickly activate the catalytic converter. Hydro-carbon emissions are minimized in the low-to-medium range by keeping intake-valve lift low, speeding intake flow and dispersing the fuel into a finer mist, resulting in more efficient full combustion.
The new engine technology has been creating much hype among car buyers and Nissan fans. Actually the first product that will include the VVEL technology is the Infiniti G37 coupe, set to be released at the upcoming New York Auto Show this April.
The VVEL technology will be made available globally to the general public through Nissan and Infiniti product lines and accessories. Nissan Motor Co. has planned to integrate the VVEL system which harbors up to a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions greenhouse gases and fossil fuels. The VVEL system will be wedded on most of Nissan parts and products starting from FY07 under the Nissan Green Program in 2010. While undertaking under the green-schemed program, Nissan has also took into consideration the development of gasoline-powered engines also to be released by the year 2010.
