Volkswagen proves once again that small-capacity engines offer a true alternative to its huge and heavier engine counterparts. The automaker has used the annual International Motor Symposium here to introduce a new turbocharged 1.4-liter direct-injection four-cylinder TSI gasoline engine.

The compact unit churns out a claimed 122 horsepower along with 148 pound-feet of maximum torque at an ultra low 1,500 rpm. It surpasses its revved up capacities of VW's normally aspirated 1.6-liter direct-injection four-cylinder engine to the tune of 7 hp and 33 lb-ft.

The new engine is based on Volkswagen's impressive Twincharger power plant embedded to the Golf and Touran with a bore and stroke of 76.5 mm and 75.6 mm. It's definitely unlike the existing 140-hp and 170-hp Twincharger engines which it metes out with the supercharger, depending solely on a turbocharger to engorge its reserves.

Also exhibited in Vienna is Volkswagen's new seven-speed double-shift gearbox (DSG). The new unit, code-named DQ200 and perceive for torque loads of up to 148 lb-ft, differs from Volkswagen's existing six-speed unit, the DG250, by integrating a dry sump engineered by German specialist LUK. This arrangement does away with the need for expensive servicing.

Volkswagen's new turbocharged 1.4-liter engine and seven-speed double-clutch gearbox are claimed to provide the Golf with combined average fuel consumption that is the equivalent of 40 U.S. mpg in combination.

The engine unit's scheduled to hit into next year's all-new Polo and to go into the Golf and Touran later this year.
