Silence is golden... maybe

I have a question. Why is it that people when with another person always want to keep a conversation going. We try saying filler phrases in order to prevent silence. However some people like to sit and just enjoy the company of another person. What is it that makes a person act in either manner? Just something to think about and no, this isn't rambunctious.
