Howto: Disable Windows Security Center Balloon Warning
by FrosT

Introduction
Do you ever get annoyed with the Windows Security Center Pop-Up telling you that you are not protected because you do not have any Anti-Virus Software, or Automatic Updates is turned off? Well so was I. That is why I searched the internet for the answer and I finally found it. In light of that here are detailed instructions on how to disable those Balloon hint tips from the Windows Security Center.

Removing Annoying Balloon Pop-Up
In order to remove the annoying balloon pop-up from windows security center we need to follow these steps exactly. Click on the Windows Start button. Next click on either Programs or All Programs and from there click on Accessories and than to System Tools. Click on Security Center which should pull up the Windows Security Center window which shows the Anti-Virus, Windows Update and Windows Firewall.

Look to the left hand side, you will see a Resources pane. Once you find the Resource pane in the Windows Security Center window click on the "Change the way Security Center alerts me." A Window will appear with multiple check boxes which allow you to choose what you want to be alerted on. My personal setting is un-checking all, Windows Firewall, Anti-Virus and Windows Update. If you leave any of these boxes checked Windows Security Center will alert you if you disable that item. For example, if I do not un-check Windows Firewall, and I find out that my Router has a built in firewall that works 100times better than Windows Firewall ever will and I decide that I do not need that on, the second I turn off Windows Firewall a red security shield will come up on my taskbar displaying a balloon hint that states something like I am un-protected and click here to protect yourself.

Following those simple steps you can choose what to be notified on and what not to be notified on.

Ending Notes
I hate Windows telling me what to do. I am glad Windows Security Center has the option to disable these alerts, as the Security Center alerts annoy me. Whether you want to choose to have it alert you for one item instead of 3 this tutorial should help you accomplish your goal of being less annoying by Windows Security Center.

"change the way security center alerts me" is a light gray color for me...not allowing me to click on it to change it. :/

I find that if it is greyed out that means it should not be alerting you. Can anyone verify this?

Woo hoo! Finally got rid of this annoyance. THANKS FrosT!

Posted by anonymous on May 17th, 2008

Worked for me also. Don't know why it pops up because everything is enabled and working. Anyway what idiot in their right mind would create a popup that displays so quick you cannot even read it to see what is causing it. I disabled eveything else in MSconfig but still didn't stop it. Only when I got the same thing on a very slow computer did the popup stay long enough to be read. Very bad programming.

Posted by anonymous on August 16th, 2008

I hate the fact that you have to manually do this. I have a small reg script that disables ballon tips, but of course the special 'security' bullshit is exempt from that. Anyone know a way to script turning these options off?

Posted by anonymous on August 20th, 2008

Still a useful tip!

Thank you so much. Have ditched all but one office PC in favour of Macs but had to keep this useless heap to run our accounting software. At least its a bit less annoying to use now.

Posted by anonymous on March 04th, 2009

I find things like that annoying, but I'm a computer person (like most who would post here). But we are less than 0.5% of computer users, the other 99.5% need to be told that stuff.

Posted by anonymous on March 08th, 2009

Go to Help and Support in Windows. Search Security Center. It tells you how to turn off security alert in the help and support section.

Posted by anonymous on March 16th, 2009

well, i do not have the security center in my system tools listing. I have already turned off everything in service awhile back and the freaking thing still give warning every time I start my PC. damn microsoft...not like its security does any good, damn bandaid company

Posted by anonymous on June 17th, 2009

I also didn't have the security center in my system tools, but I "encouraged" it to pop-up by stopping the Security Center service and was able to disable the balloon warning from there. Thank you very much for the info, that thing has been bugging me forever!

Posted by anonymous on June 27th, 2009

Cannoy image how easy. Thanks.

Posted by anonymous on July 07th, 2009

Anyone encountering the buy antivirus software you are infected with spyware, please download and install Malware Bytes which is also free.

Posted by anonymous on July 31st, 2009

Hah! Simply easy, but simpler to find instructions that fiddle with it for 15 minutes, thanks for the help man.

For those of you with questions about virus protection, get AVG, it's best for it's price seeing how it's free, virus free for 2 years now, and I download things all the time, if you're looking for heavier protection, just search around and avoid Mcaffee(Spelling) and Norton.
