The Secret to Fast Torrent Downloading
by FrosT

Introduction
After a recent format of my computer I installed UTorrent a Bit-Torrent software package that is very light weight and works extremely well. I found out that my download speeds were extremely slow. 10KB/sec on average! Well I love to seed after I have downloaded the whole package and this has worked well for me in the past. Now that the computer was formatted and all my settings were wiped out my speeds were crap. I will describe the steps I took to go from a speed of 10KB/sec to a speed of 300KB/sec on average. Remember this is all speculation from what I noticed; I do not have any proof that any statements said here will make your speed increase. It worked for me and logically from that I will make the statements. First things first, make sure your network settings and ports etc are all correct, I will not re-invent the wheel here and tell you how to do that. Google provides lot's of great tutorials on how to setup different Bit-Torrent clients.

Seed, Seed, Seed
The key to getting awesome download speeds is seeding. From the looks of it UTorrent may have an internal credit system. I could be wrong, but from my extensive downloading research it seems as though there is a Credit system internally built into UTorrent. What is a Credit system you ask? Well a Credit system means that there is a record being kept at how much you download to how much you upload. A general rule is for every megabyte you download, you should at least upload 1.5 megabytes. This will get you a ratio of 1.5 which is ideal for most downloader's and uploaders.

Having a good ratio helps boost your speeds dramatically. Remember after a torrent has finished please seed till at least a 1.5 ratio. This will help out the whole Bit-Torrent community. Do not be a jerk.

Downloading the File First, Seeding Later
Back to my scenario, I love to download the file first and seed later. I used to set my upload speeds to 2KB/sec so I could accomplish this. I have a cable connection of 3MBps down and 40KB/sec up. The more upload speed I use the slower I can download. This is probably the case for most people. How do you get around this little mishap? Here is how, when you first start the torrent, make sure your upload speed is above 20KB/sec. Let this setting stay for at least an hour. Once your ratio has reached something above a 1.0, lower your upload to speed to 8KB/sec or above. I recommend 10KB/sec. This will show UTorrent and the tracker that you are a good seeder and from that they will send more bandwidth your way. Give it another hour and check on the torrent, your speeds should have dramatically increased. If not chances are the torrent is either not a very popular torrent, I am completely wrong or my testing was just a spoof.

Seeding Later
Remember to seed after the torrent file has finished. Seeding is how Bit-Torrents are kept alive. You were able to download the torrent because someone else was seeding it for you. Remember that! It is not just a take, but a give take community. You give back 1.5 times what you take. My suggestion is after you downloaded 3 torrent files, open those torrent files up for a single night at your highest upload rate. Once you hit a 1.5 ratio or above stop the torrents and you are finished. Than repeat the process for your next 3 torrent downloads. This way you can have the full file quickly and give back to the community at the same time when your internet connection is generally idle.

Ending Notes
Be a good seeder and leecher. Do not just take. Give back to the torrent community what they give to you. Without that Bit-Torrent will not survive and end up in the gutter. Seeding is the key to using Bit-Torrents. Hopefully the steps outlined here to improve your torrent downloading speed will inspire you to seed more and be known to trackers as a great seeder and be able to get any file you want in no time. I just downloaded a 4.7 GB movie file in less than 12 hours on a Cable connection. That is proof enough for me that this works.

Thxgrin.gif i got almost 10 kbs faster downloads with this guide. But what can I do to get downloads who are as fast as my band limit.

my mail is lars.grini@hotmail.com

The only way is if there are a ton of seeders and hardly any leechers. As long as there are a bunch of leechers on the torrent your DL speeds will be what allocation is allowed.

4.7 GB movie file in less than 12 hours? ...i hate to break the news to ya, but that is slow, and BTW the client has no control over the speed you get unless you set a Max speed specification, where are you people getting your torrents from? 40-60kbps to me is a slow torrent, fast would be 500+kbps, on one private tracker that i use my average download speed is 700kbps

frost
on December 14th, 2006
Private trackers are a ton different than general torrents. That and the connection speed of the end-user also plays a factor. For the most part all the torrents I download only have a few seeders and getting upto 40KB/sec is a great task. There are more popular public torrents that I download which I do get 700KB/sec.

It all depends on the type of torrents you are trying to get. Almost all of mine are rare.

yea i cant say that this works iv been using utorrent for over a year and on this computer my downloads are well over a terabyte and uploads around 400gigs... i seed on another computer after files are transfered to a external hdd, and i cant say that a poor upload ratio has ever slowed my downloads, unless the tracker capped me, but as for utorrent doing any kind of capping id have to say no, i still max out my download speed everytime i download

anonymous
on January 18th, 2007
works... downloaded same file twice. Once in beginning and again after a one week period of seeding files. increased speed about42 percent!

i dont under stand how you all can d/l so fast my bandwidth is 633kbps=D/L and 233kbps=U/L and all i can get minee to do is 10KB/s at the most. my settings in utorrent are:
global upload: 15kB/s
global max connections: 130
max # of connected peers: 70
max upload slots:10
dht enable, Peer exchange enabled, protocol encryption enabled, and dns report to tracker enabled

on January 28th, 2007
i have the same problem.....my bandwidth is 650kbpsfor download and 241kbps for upload my settings are: global upload: 20kB/s
global max connections: 150
max # of connected peers: 75
max upload slots:4
dht enable, Peer exchange enabled, protocol encryption enabled, and dns report to tracker enabled, and the EvID4226Patch set to 50 half open....i dont know what the problem is ive never have this problem before with utorrent until i reformatted my computer last weekend. the torrents im trying to d/l have like 8000 seeders and 3000leechers a piece and im only getting to connect to like 4 or 5 each and d/ling at like 2kB/s-10kB/s

anonymous
on February 20th, 2007
Same here. From Websites I can get upto 1,500kbps, sometimes faster. Torrents I can only get 5-10kbps lately. A while ago I could get 50kbps and that was ok. I only got 200kbps+ once when the torrent was a very unused torrent. Axxo and such are used alot. If there's a lot of people downloading, does that mean I get less download speed? Thanks.

hi,ok,I just started with torrent downloading for the first time after shareaza for 3 years..due to winXP sp2 issue I get errors about my nat.sorry wife needs internet too so..no solo PC setup here.Funny I thought that uTorrent would be slow like shareaza but last night,my 120GB hdd filled up with 160mb free space!I was downloading music samples lib of 27 1.5gb files!Ok..how is that possible??The download was not even completed due to the hdd fill up but it went from 0 sources and infinity time to download to my hdd fillng up and fast! Also it seems that even if a file is not completely donloaded in the utorrent window,it shows up on my hdd fully downloaded and usable. What is the deal with this torrent stuff I ask and why has it taken me so long to catchup?Anyway,I just need to know is this normal? You see the samples library I speak of is a 27 part series of 1.5gb dvds.Ok.. in shareaza I got no sources at all and in utorrent that same but all the sudden from 24hours I got all files but dvd 26(0kb).The rest 1 through 27(skipping 26 for some odd reason)downloaded..hmm nice app I say.BTW my downlad and upload are set to the max the app will allow which is lan card settings..I max it all out on my p2p apps.some stuff is fast others are slow but this experiance has me backing up files like crazy now just to keep up with utorrent!Anything like this happen to anyone else?

frost
on April 06th, 2007
You have your system set to allocate files, this means allocate the space needed before you download. Change that and you are good.

anonymous

Thx for the hint, worked like a charm for me. Got 100 kbit/s more !

Also, your ISP will play a HUGE role in torrent speeds. For example, in Canada, Shaw internet caps and blocks known torrent ports, as well as performing Deep Packet Inspection, seeing what you are sending and recieving, and may pursue discinaplry actions towards you for breaking thier TOS. Always check your service providers TOS to determine the state of your torrent speeds.

OK i have a pretty fast cable connection but I have been used to having my connection go at 10/kbs for months. I read this and did everything (which i apparently had done before, and there was no real chage (maybe another 2/kbs). So, and this hopefully will help the last dude before me that posted, i switched from one torrent site torrentreactor, to boxtorrent). I tried the boxtorrent on bittorrent and it still only went 12kb/s for 2 days. At this point i was about to give up. However, on a whim i switched to utorrent, and I now have averaqe 250 kbs dl AND the same upload speed. I think its partially due to the encryption feature in utorrent. In summary, bittorrent sucks sad.gif

I'm on painkillers but if you can make sense of this I hope this helps!

Hi i am having a problem with Utorrent about 30 minutes ago i was getting download speeds of about 115 kB/s and then it went down to 43 kB/s and now up again to 115 kB/s
Is this normal also I followed a guide to getting good BitTorrent speeds and had my upload speed at 25kB/s and then after 30 mins I changed it to 10kB/s and have left it alone.

i was browsing google to asnswer a bittorent question came across this site/comments

thought i'd throw my 2 cents in

i've been using bittorent for years, its great..most of the time

However what i noticed that no one else mentioned here is: trackers

seems you can be downloading mostly the same file, even close to same size and not notice it, b ut 2 files can be hosted on 2 different trackers

trackers point to where the file is essentially, your client picks it up and starts getting others who have similiar pieces

so sometimes your shitty download speeds is because the tracker has gone offline, no longer valid or experiencing issues, sometimes torrent sites clear out old torrents, but you still find the torrent links hosted somewhere on the net, and thus you get a dead tracker, dead torrent

So the way you fix that is just to download the file from somewhere else, you can see the tracker at the bottom of utorrent, it auto-cycles between several every few seconds, if it has multiple trackers attached to your file

and one last thing, when i do my uploading, unless i am using my private torrent sites, i set my upload to 3k, i sometimes seed, but mostly at 3k i get great speeds, or none at all, no seeders, mininova loves to let me start a file at 300k+ for 10 min, then slow to 0.0k for a week, if it ever gets done

also check the availability bar in utorrent , red means bad, pure blue is great, blue and white mixed means pretty good, but each track uttorent switches to, the colors will change, so just keep an eye on it, if it keeps staying the same color, then you can bet its the tracker or not enough seeds.

woo that was a lot of text

I use bit tornado the shadow experiment. My friend set it all up. I seem to be able to download things very fast for the first few minutes but then it will slow down to almost 0kb/sec. If i cancel the download and restart it will be fast again but quickly fade after a few minutes. I use a router and haven't set anything special up. What do I need to do to consistently achieve faster download speeds. Sorry, i'm really new to this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try. Yesterday I decided to use again uTorrent and I didn't change anything in settings except in the Speed Guide, I tried some settings in "Connection type" and I noticed some differences but if I choose a bigger one, let say "xx/10MBit", this offers to me a good download and upload speed.

Download: 200-350 kB/s
Upload: 80-130 kB/s

As I know my bandwich is 128 kBs and the upload speed it seems to not pass over this barriere but is OK because last year it took me a more than 1 week to get 2 GB with a "incredible" download speed of 5-70 kB/s

I'll appreciate very much if anybody tell me how to increase the upload speed, anyway I keep seeding the torrent 1-2 days or more if needed but when is about too many gigs is also about too many space occupied on the HD. I use to burn everything on CDs and DVDs.

Thanks in advanced!

When I 1st installed Utorrent, I had no problems with it at all. I just opened a port on my router and I get speeds anywhere from 70 - 300 kb/s. I have seen it as high as a little over 900kbs. But that is rare. My fastest time for downloading a movie is 45 mins (750 MB) and 15 mins for a TV show (350MB).

anonymous
on November 29th, 2007
(same guy as above)

Also, my download bandwith is 15mb/s (cable).
I used a newsgroup once (usenext) and I was getting download speeds of 2mb/s - 9mb/s. Now that is REALLY fast compared to a torrent. Not much to choose from on some newsgroups though, for movies anyway. A lot of crap.

If you download utorrent it gives you a start up page linking to portforwarding.com. This page tells you how to set up your router and firewall settings to allow portforwarding which helped to increase my speeds from average 40kbps, to average 100kbps on a 760kbps download capable connection. In short download utorrent and follow the instructions.

ok heres how it really works!

yes uploading is the best way in which the sites can increase your download because then you are shareing the file with others who can then share it back to you.

however the real main factors which determin your download speeds are your internet conection speed and the ammount of seed/leechers for the torrent you download!

i am on a 8MB connection and i get anything up to 500 kb/s downloads, i have done nothing special and i havnt seeded much at all! i dont even use the same torrent site every time! all i do is google it! to be comepltely honest with you all you have to do is check the torrent health, most torrent sites let you check this by simply having a torrent health bar next to the torrent, make sure that the health is above half otherwise go somewhere else for the torrent.

you could try adding more trckers for your torrents, you can google "good torrent trackers" and then simply go onto the torrent properties and there should be somewhere for you to put the new trackers.

yes private trackers are amazingly fast BUT there also amazingly rare! simply because the file you are downloading must be old or very new or on a private server so dont brag about how great your connection speed is simply because you found something no one wants or no one knows about or is something no one else can get!

i use BitTorrent and i have never had issues with speed so i really dont think the programs make that much of an issue, you can talk about how programs take up resorces and all that crap but its got nothing to do with the download speed! is all to do with the seeding/leeching ratio, the torrent health and the connection speed!

and one last thing i found the fastest way for me to download something is for me to use both my wireless conection and a cabled connection getting my the 1GB for the cabled connection and the 1GB for the wireless

hope this helps, but if not then get a faster internet connection!!

Private trackers are where you normally see the 500 plus speeds.Kinda like if you buy a game from Direct2Drive,you get incredible speeds. If you're downloading from say The Pirate Bay,you won't see speeds like that.

That's works. From 12 kB/s become 28 kB/s (reach 50kB/s sometimes).
But my ratio increased very slowly. 0.158 in 1 hour. uTorrent limited upload bandwith to 9 kB/s, unless we set it unlimited...:-D.
