The Secret to Fast Torrent Downloading
by FrosT

This article is pretty old and outdated. Leaving it up for nostalgia reasons. Comments have been disabled on it, given the dated material.

Introduction
After a recent format of my computer I installed UTorrent a Bit-Torrent software package that is very light weight and works extremely well. I found out that my download speeds were extremely slow. 10KB/sec on average! Well I love to seed after I have downloaded the whole package and this has worked well for me in the past. Now that the computer was formatted and all my settings were wiped out my speeds were crap. I will describe the steps I took to go from a speed of 10KB/sec to a speed of 300KB/sec on average. Remember this is all speculation from what I noticed; I do not have any proof that any statements said here will make your speed increase. It worked for me and logically from that I will make the statements. First things first, make sure your network settings and ports etc are all correct, I will not re-invent the wheel here and tell you how to do that. Google provides lot's of great tutorials on how to setup different Bit-Torrent clients.

Seed, Seed, Seed
The key to getting awesome download speeds is seeding. From the looks of it UTorrent may have an internal credit system. I could be wrong, but from my extensive downloading research it seems as though there is a Credit system internally built into UTorrent. What is a Credit system you ask? Well a Credit system means that there is a record being kept at how much you download to how much you upload. A general rule is for every megabyte you download, you should at least upload 1.5 megabytes. This will get you a ratio of 1.5 which is ideal for most downloader's and uploaders.

Having a good ratio helps boost your speeds dramatically. Remember after a torrent has finished please seed till at least a 1.5 ratio. This will help out the whole Bit-Torrent community. Do not be a jerk.

Downloading the File First, Seeding Later
Back to my scenario, I love to download the file first and seed later. I used to set my upload speeds to 2KB/sec so I could accomplish this. I have a cable connection of 3MBps down and 40KB/sec up. The more upload speed I use the slower I can download. This is probably the case for most people. How do you get around this little mishap? Here is how, when you first start the torrent, make sure your upload speed is above 20KB/sec. Let this setting stay for at least an hour. Once your ratio has reached something above a 1.0, lower your upload to speed to 8KB/sec or above. I recommend 10KB/sec. This will show UTorrent and the tracker that you are a good seeder and from that they will send more bandwidth your way. Give it another hour and check on the torrent, your speeds should have dramatically increased. If not chances are the torrent is either not a very popular torrent, I am completely wrong or my testing was just a spoof.

Seeding Later
Remember to seed after the torrent file has finished. Seeding is how Bit-Torrents are kept alive. You were able to download the torrent because someone else was seeding it for you. Remember that! It is not just a take, but a give take community. You give back 1.5 times what you take. My suggestion is after you downloaded 3 torrent files, open those torrent files up for a single night at your highest upload rate. Once you hit a 1.5 ratio or above stop the torrents and you are finished. Than repeat the process for your next 3 torrent downloads. This way you can have the full file quickly and give back to the community at the same time when your internet connection is generally idle.

Ending Notes
Be a good seeder and leecher. Do not just take. Give back to the torrent community what they give to you. Without that Bit-Torrent will not survive and end up in the gutter. Seeding is the key to using Bit-Torrents. Hopefully the steps outlined here to improve your torrent downloading speed will inspire you to seed more and be known to trackers as a great seeder and be able to get any file you want in no time. I just downloaded a 4.7 GB file in less than 12 hours on a Cable at 3 mbps (note the date on the blog) connection. That is proof enough for me that this works.

Thxgrin.gif i got almost 10 kbs faster downloads with this guide. But what can I do to get downloads who are as fast as my band limit.

my mail is lars.grini@hotmail.com

Posted by frost on October 24th, 2006

The only way is if there are a ton of seeders and hardly any leechers. As long as there are a bunch of leechers on the torrent your DL speeds will be what allocation is allowed.

my speed was 10-20 now are 40 - 60 grin.gif grin.gif grin.gif thnks

Posted by anonymous on December 14th, 2006

4.7 GB movie file in less than 12 hours? ...i hate to break the news to ya, but that is slow, and BTW the client has no control over the speed you get unless you set a Max speed specification, where are you people getting your torrents from? 40-60kbps to me is a slow torrent, fast would be 500+kbps, on one private tracker that i use my average download speed is 700kbps

Posted by frost on December 14th, 2006

Private trackers are a ton different than general torrents. That and the connection speed of the end-user also plays a factor. For the most part all the torrents I download only have a few seeders and getting upto 40KB/sec is a great task. There are more popular public torrents that I download which I do get 700KB/sec.

It all depends on the type of torrents you are trying to get. Almost all of mine are rare.

this realy works! thanks

Posted by anonymous on December 20th, 2006

yea i cant say that this works iv been using utorrent for over a year and on this computer my downloads are well over a terabyte and uploads around 400gigs... i seed on another computer after files are transfered to a external hdd, and i cant say that a poor upload ratio has ever slowed my downloads, unless the tracker capped me, but as for utorrent doing any kind of capping id have to say no, i still max out my download speed everytime i download

Posted by anonymous on January 17th, 2007

works... downloaded same file twice. Once in beginning and again after a one week period of seeding files. increased speed about42 percent!

Posted by anonymous on January 28th, 2007

i dont under stand how you all can d/l so fast my bandwidth is 633kbps=D/L and 233kbps=U/L and all i can get minee to do is 10KB/s at the most. my settings in utorrent are:
global upload: 15kB/s
global max connections: 130
max # of connected peers: 70
max upload slots:10
dht enable, Peer exchange enabled, protocol encryption enabled, and dns report to tracker enabled

Posted by lucky711x on January 28th, 2007

i have the same problem.....my bandwidth is 650kbpsfor download and 241kbps for upload my settings are: global upload: 20kB/s
global max connections: 150
max # of connected peers: 75
max upload slots:4
dht enable, Peer exchange enabled, protocol encryption enabled, and dns report to tracker enabled, and the EvID4226Patch set to 50 half open....i dont know what the problem is ive never have this problem before with utorrent until i reformatted my computer last weekend. the torrents im trying to d/l have like 8000 seeders and 3000leechers a piece and im only getting to connect to like 4 or 5 each and d/ling at like 2kB/s-10kB/s

Posted by anonymous on February 20th, 2007

Same here. From Websites I can get upto 1,500kbps, sometimes faster. Torrents I can only get 5-10kbps lately. A while ago I could get 50kbps and that was ok. I only got 200kbps+ once when the torrent was a very unused torrent. Axxo and such are used alot. If there's a lot of people downloading, does that mean I get less download speed? Thanks.

Posted by anonymous on February 21st, 2007

hello , why can i download files sometimes with 300 kbs and most of the time with an average of 60 kbs ?

Posted by anonymous on February 22nd, 2007

I have 8Mb Broadband and my speed mostly stays at 0.0 now. it dint before. i uninstalled my windows and installed it again which means i had to install utorrent again. and i think somthing went wrong.

Posted by frost on February 22nd, 2007

Probably windows firewall.

--FrosT

Posted by anonymous on March 12th, 2007

when you say xxxkbps, you mean for 1 file? or global speed?

Posted by anonymous on March 30th, 2007

and what if your isp has a stupid rule like this: upload limit: 1 Gb/month or you get thrown on smallband

Posted by frost on April 02nd, 2007

That sounds like you have a personal issue there. Thank goodness I am not limited and not on smallband.

hi,ok,I just started with torrent downloading for the first time after shareaza for 3 years..due to winXP sp2 issue I get errors about my nat.sorry wife needs internet too so..no solo PC setup here.Funny I thought that uTorrent would be slow like shareaza but last night,my 120GB hdd filled up with 160mb free space!I was downloading music samples lib of 27 1.5gb files!Ok..how is that possible??The download was not even completed due to the hdd fill up but it went from 0 sources and infinity time to download to my hdd fillng up and fast! Also it seems that even if a file is not completely donloaded in the utorrent window,it shows up on my hdd fully downloaded and usable. What is the deal with this torrent stuff I ask and why has it taken me so long to catchup?Anyway,I just need to know is this normal? You see the samples library I speak of is a 27 part series of 1.5gb dvds.Ok.. in shareaza I got no sources at all and in utorrent that same but all the sudden from 24hours I got all files but dvd 26(0kb).The rest 1 through 27(skipping 26 for some odd reason)downloaded..hmm nice app I say.BTW my downlad and upload are set to the max the app will allow which is lan card settings..I max it all out on my p2p apps.some stuff is fast others are slow but this experiance has me backing up files like crazy now just to keep up with utorrent!Anything like this happen to anyone else?

Posted by frost on April 06th, 2007

You have your system set to allocate files, this means allocate the space needed before you download. Change that and you are good.

Posted by anonymous on May 05th, 2007

Thx for the hint, worked like a charm for me. Got 100 kbit/s more !

If you are looking for a place with tons of torrents, checkout this site:

sumotorrent.com

Posted by anonymous on May 25th, 2007

Also, your ISP will play a HUGE role in torrent speeds. For example, in Canada, Shaw internet caps and blocks known torrent ports, as well as performing Deep Packet Inspection, seeing what you are sending and recieving, and may pursue discinaplry actions towards you for breaking thier TOS. Always check your service providers TOS to determine the state of your torrent speeds.

Posted by anonymous on May 27th, 2007

ok .. so I downloaded almost 5 gigs and didnt seed much .. now my speeds went from 40 to 5 KB/sec .. i learned my lesson, but now what do i do?

i use BitTorrent and i dont know how to determine the download/upload ratio ..

anyway i can return to my original speed...? it's frustrating!

Posted by anonymous on May 27th, 2007

i hav bout 12 kbs normly 3 if its crap 30 4 gd plz help

Posted by anonymous on May 30th, 2007

OK i have a pretty fast cable connection but I have been used to having my connection go at 10/kbs for months. I read this and did everything (which i apparently had done before, and there was no real chage (maybe another 2/kbs). So, and this hopefully will help the last dude before me that posted, i switched from one torrent site torrentreactor, to boxtorrent). I tried the boxtorrent on bittorrent and it still only went 12kb/s for 2 days. At this point i was about to give up. However, on a whim i switched to utorrent, and I now have averaqe 250 kbs dl AND the same upload speed. I think its partially due to the encryption feature in utorrent. In summary, bittorrent sucks sad.gif

I'm on painkillers but if you can make sense of this I hope this helps!

Hi i am having a problem with Utorrent about 30 minutes ago i was getting download speeds of about 115 kB/s and then it went down to 43 kB/s and now up again to 115 kB/s
Is this normal also I followed a guide to getting good BitTorrent speeds and had my upload speed at 25kB/s and then after 30 mins I changed it to 10kB/s and have left it alone.
Please help me

Posted by anonymous on June 15th, 2007

oh and the speeds were the average

Posted by anonymous on June 21st, 2007

Im am donwnloading with a speed of 1.1 MB/s, haha beat that. I have uploaded 30 gigs and downloaded 9. 4.9 gig movie done in 1 hour.

Posted by anonymous on July 18th, 2007

i was browsing google to asnswer a bittorent question came across this site/comments

thought i'd throw my 2 cents in

i've been using bittorent for years, its great..most of the time

However what i noticed that no one else mentioned here is: trackers

seems you can be downloading mostly the same file, even close to same size and not notice it, b ut 2 files can be hosted on 2 different trackers

trackers point to where the file is essentially, your client picks it up and starts getting others who have similiar pieces

so sometimes your shitty download speeds is because the tracker has gone offline, no longer valid or experiencing issues, sometimes torrent sites clear out old torrents, but you still find the torrent links hosted somewhere on the net, and thus you get a dead tracker, dead torrent

So the way you fix that is just to download the file from somewhere else, you can see the tracker at the bottom of utorrent, it auto-cycles between several every few seconds, if it has multiple trackers attached to your file

and one last thing, when i do my uploading, unless i am using my private torrent sites, i set my upload to 3k, i sometimes seed, but mostly at 3k i get great speeds, or none at all, no seeders, mininova loves to let me start a file at 300k+ for 10 min, then slow to 0.0k for a week, if it ever gets done

also check the availability bar in utorrent , red means bad, pure blue is great, blue and white mixed means pretty good, but each track uttorent switches to, the colors will change, so just keep an eye on it, if it keeps staying the same color, then you can bet its the tracker or not enough seeds.

woo that was a lot of text

later

i just downloaded a 1080p HD movie which was 10GB in under 2 hours grin.gif

now thats what you call success, but it was a private torrent, nothing to do with this

Posted by anonymous on September 29th, 2007

Anyone heard of DC++? If you want fast and free I find this very fast. However i think it's because my universities server is fast. Worth a try, torrent is bs compared to this.

Posted by anonymous on September 30th, 2007

before my ratio was almost between 3,0 and 5.0 and now it's between 1,0 and 1,5 and the spped it's almost the same, i don't see a diference

Posted by anonymous on October 08th, 2007

Im capped at 24 megabits per second. is there a way i can download anything even close to that on utorrent? the most i hit is around 750kb/s, i get faster uploads than downloads. is there a way to speed my downloads?

Posted by anonymous on October 08th, 2007

I use bit tornado the shadow experiment. My friend set it all up. I seem to be able to download things very fast for the first few minutes but then it will slow down to almost 0kb/sec. If i cancel the download and restart it will be fast again but quickly fade after a few minutes. I use a router and haven't set anything special up. What do I need to do to consistently achieve faster download speeds. Sorry, i'm really new to this. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. I'm using a program called BitRocket. It's on Mac OSX. I was wondering. Would those tips work for BitRocket? I tried limiting the upload to 10kb/s but it goes to 0 and my download slows down heaps. How are you guys getting so fast? The fastest I've ever gone is 300kb/s and I have a pretty fast connection. Broadband test said: 13000kb/s download, 850kb/s upload. Could anyon help? Thanks.

Posted by anonymous on November 25th, 2007

Thanks for the tips, I'll try. Yesterday I decided to use again uTorrent and I didn't change anything in settings except in the Speed Guide, I tried some settings in "Connection type" and I noticed some differences but if I choose a bigger one, let say "xx/10MBit", this offers to me a good download and upload speed.

Download: 200-350 kB/s
Upload: 80-130 kB/s

As I know my bandwich is 128 kBs and the upload speed it seems to not pass over this barriere but is OK because last year it took me a more than 1 week to get 2 GB with a "incredible" download speed of 5-70 kB/s

I'll appreciate very much if anybody tell me how to increase the upload speed, anyway I keep seeding the torrent 1-2 days or more if needed but when is about too many gigs is also about too many space occupied on the HD. I use to burn everything on CDs and DVDs.

Thanks in advanced!

Posted by anonymous on November 29th, 2007

When I 1st installed Utorrent, I had no problems with it at all. I just opened a port on my router and I get speeds anywhere from 70 - 300 kb/s. I have seen it as high as a little over 900kbs. But that is rare. My fastest time for downloading a movie is 45 mins (750 MB) and 15 mins for a TV show (350MB).

Posted by anonymous on November 29th, 2007

(same guy as above)

Also, my download bandwith is 15mb/s (cable).
I used a newsgroup once (usenext) and I was getting download speeds of 2mb/s - 9mb/s. Now that is REALLY fast compared to a torrent. Not much to choose from on some newsgroups though, for movies anyway. A lot of crap.

Posted by anonymous on December 08th, 2007

plese give me a faster torrent...like 500-700* kb

iptorrents is the best private tracker, download a film in 40 mins, also try using port 80 for downloading it has done wonders for me

Posted by anonymous on January 09th, 2008

If you download utorrent it gives you a start up page linking to portforwarding.com. This page tells you how to set up your router and firewall settings to allow portforwarding which helped to increase my speeds from average 40kbps, to average 100kbps on a 760kbps download capable connection. In short download utorrent and follow the instructions.

Posted by anonymous on January 18th, 2008

I installed utorrent and followed the install instructions and I am now regularly hitting 200kps, although I have also increased my seeding

Posted by anonymous on January 29th, 2008

im confused but i guess your rigth cuz every say soo =(

Posted by anonymous on February 05th, 2008

Is seeding the same as uploading?

Posted by anonymous on February 10th, 2008

Well It's is for you to say because you have 3MBs and I have 512 kbs...and it's really hard to seed game that is almost 5 GB, but thanx anyway! Hope that I will once have faster internet! And does port forward help with increasing speed?

Posted by anonymous on February 21st, 2008

Here is a suggestion for most of you. Dump that unstable cable CRAP. I just recently changed over from a 7.1/1.5 DSL line to FIOS 50/15 and my torrents FLY now. I typically seed for quite a while anyway, but this FIOS is SICK!!!!!! LOL @ Cable users!

Posted by anonymous on February 28th, 2008

i thought that if i keep my upload speed lower it will make my download speed faster...i guest i was wrong...at my last torrent the speed went down to 30-40 kbs and i didn't knew why.i've set my upload speed to 1 kbs,i guess that was the reasonhappy.gif.as soon as i set my upload speed higher ,at 35 kbs my download speed increeased at 80 kbs.i'm waiting for my ratio to grow so i can put decrese the upload speed a bit, cause my regular speed for downloading was something about 150-170 kbs.i hope it will be the same again

Posted by anonymous on February 29th, 2008

how to know my ratio number

Posted by anonymous on March 07th, 2008

I have the same problem as one other poster here: when I startup the client (uTorrent) it downloads like mad (>100kbs) for about one minute, then over the next couple of minutes it drops down down down until after that it sits on about 1kbs thereafter. wtf?

Posted by anonymous on March 09th, 2008

Is there anyway to get past the isp upload limit? I changed it in my client to unlimited but it never gets past about 40kbps. I'd like to seed better when I'm not dl'ing.

Posted by anonymous on March 09th, 2008

Wow this realy works! thanks

Posted by anonymous on March 11th, 2008

wha... how u guys kept your speed till 50kb/s?? mine is always 0.1kb/s - 5kb/s... any help??

Posted by anonymous on March 19th, 2008

thanks man my speed use to be 15k to 24k and rarely 30k but now its almost always up 30 and some time it reaches 60k

Posted by anonymous on March 23rd, 2008

This rocked! My speeds went up to 100kbps! Thanks man!

my ratio doesn't go over one. what should i do?

Posted by anonymous on April 03rd, 2008

should in put my upload to 10kb/s even if my ration is around 9.

Posted by anonymous on April 06th, 2008

i have a tip for u make sure there is a japonise seeder one of my japonise seeder was uploadin at 50 kb/s wow and others were like 3 kb/s

Posted by anonymous on April 08th, 2008

WTF LOL, r u people still in the stoneage or sumik, r u all on dial-up??? ive got 20meg virgin, and i max out my d/l speed on 95% torrents, 2.2mbs, even on a new torrent where theres only 5 seeders and 500 leechers still get above 1mbs and i cant remember the last time my speed droped below 1mbs! i get a 360 game, around 6 gigs in less than 40mins!!!

1.7 rateing or for 1 file i even had 2.4 ratio before even finishing to download it and now.. i have a file with 0.024 ratio and 200kb/s download speed and my upload speed is 10kb/s .. i want to finish this damn download and peacfully share it (no limits)

Posted by anonymous on May 13th, 2008

It is worthless.No difference.

Posted by jgooda on May 15th, 2008

excelelnt, thanks. I was wondering why my bit-torrent was so slow. I increased the upload limit and now it's much faster

Posted by anonymous on May 29th, 2008

ok heres how it really works!

yes uploading is the best way in which the sites can increase your download because then you are shareing the file with others who can then share it back to you.

however the real main factors which determin your download speeds are your internet conection speed and the ammount of seed/leechers for the torrent you download!

i am on a 8MB connection and i get anything up to 500 kb/s downloads, i have done nothing special and i havnt seeded much at all! i dont even use the same torrent site every time! all i do is google it! to be comepltely honest with you all you have to do is check the torrent health, most torrent sites let you check this by simply having a torrent health bar next to the torrent, make sure that the health is above half otherwise go somewhere else for the torrent.

you could try adding more trckers for your torrents, you can google "good torrent trackers" and then simply go onto the torrent properties and there should be somewhere for you to put the new trackers.

yes private trackers are amazingly fast BUT there also amazingly rare! simply because the file you are downloading must be old or very new or on a private server so dont brag about how great your connection speed is simply because you found something no one wants or no one knows about or is something no one else can get!

i use BitTorrent and i have never had issues with speed so i really dont think the programs make that much of an issue, you can talk about how programs take up resorces and all that crap but its got nothing to do with the download speed! is all to do with the seeding/leeching ratio, the torrent health and the connection speed!

and one last thing i found the fastest way for me to download something is for me to use both my wireless conection and a cabled connection getting my the 1GB for the cabled connection and the 1GB for the wireless

hope this helps, but if not then get a faster internet connection!!

Posted by anonymous on July 09th, 2008

wow increased 13kb to 57-60kb thanks a lot dude

Posted by anonymous on July 13th, 2008

where or how do you get torrent speeds of 700 kb, mine are around 50-60, but im very interested in finding out how i can reach 700- over 1000, is there a certain program i should use or i think its when you do private downloads, but anywase hows this done (to get downlads at 700kb), PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW J_RAYGADA@HOTMAIL.COM

Posted by anonymous on July 17th, 2008

Private trackers are where you normally see the 500 plus speeds.Kinda like if you buy a game from Direct2Drive,you get incredible speeds. If you're downloading from say The Pirate Bay,you won't see speeds like that.

Posted by anonymous on July 20th, 2008

use the new utorrent and the make the port you use forwarded since utorrent tells you which port it will use thats why i say use utorrent.

Posted by anonymous on July 20th, 2008

Hi there! I really liked this article, and it really helps. But one question... how do you seed? Thanks ahead.

Posted by anonymous on July 28th, 2008

it works
mine speed was 30-50 kbps on a 100% health torrent
now it is shooting upto 145-170 kbps

Posted by anonymous on July 29th, 2008

oh..very good thanks grin.gif..now its 5x time faster then before grin.gif..you really helped me happy.gif

Posted by anonymous on August 01st, 2008

That's works. From 12 kB/s become 28 kB/s (reach 50kB/s sometimes).
But my ratio increased very slowly. 0.158 in 1 hour. uTorrent limited upload bandwith to 9 kB/s, unless we set it unlimited...:-D.

Posted by anonymous on August 03rd, 2008

I have internet with fast 250kb/s but torrent download sometimes 580kb/s:grin.gifDDD it is lol

Posted by anonymous on October 14th, 2008

Just to share my related experience:
I just installed utorrent one week ago, and the first 2 day, with default settings, it constantly downloaded at 300 kbp/s which I found amazing! thats about 1Gb per hour so I was happy with that.
But the third day everything slowwwwed down to 10 or 20 . They were new torrents but similar files. HELP!!

Didn't do anything for a few days asuming the problem would go away, but it didnt...

Today I got it back to +200 kbs, I'll list the variuos things I changed but not sure which one did the trick ... :
- changed com port
- added port in firewall and router forwarding
- limited the number of connections allowed
- lowered the upload speed drasticly

Reasoning behind this, in order:
-ISP have been know to limit traffic on conections the see saturationg there network so you might need to change port once in a while.
-you dont want any of them interfearing
-you router is probably saturated with connections so lower them.
- guess it goes with the previous point.

Its working for me - hope it stays that way . Think the man key was to lower upload speed and limit connections.

cheers

Posted by anonymous on October 20th, 2008

all my torrents locked up i guess bc i had upload at like 1kb/s as soon as i jumped it up to unlimited my download went to 10kb/s guess it works huh

Posted by anonymous on November 01st, 2008

this was helpful but the information from BlazingTorrents was much more informative.

Posted by anonymous on November 08th, 2008

All of my torrents went at about 10 kb/s as well, but then I installed the updates to uTorrent and now I get 200 kb/s! I had version 1.6, while 1.8 was out...

Posted by anonymous on November 09th, 2008

Sometimes, it IS the client that slows down the download. I recommend using Free Download Manager. Just google it. I was getting 3-7 KB/s while using uTorrent. But when I switched to FDM, my download speeds topped off at 34 KB/s. I know that it's slow, but it's a HUGE improvement. My DSL plan is 50 KB/s, so you get the picture.

Posted by anonymous on November 24th, 2008

you guys are nuts if u think that UTorrent limits what u download!

Posted by anonymous on December 03rd, 2008

i cannot got over 10kb/s with anything i try

Posted by anonymous on December 06th, 2008

Excellent, i did it and i got from 20 Kb/s to 215 Kb/s after doing that, its very simple, you get some ratio, that means you upload the torrents at your maximum capacity in my case at 21 Kb/s for a while, after that, i got 100 Kb/s so I limit the upload speed to 10 Kb/s so I could be able to download fast and it increased to 215 Kb/s uploading at 10, and it is a very simple philosophy, give and take, thats all

Posted by anonymous on December 13th, 2008

well, it sounds you dont know the diffrent between MB and Mb, 1MB is around 100Mb, so dont say your speed is 3MB, cuz that would be super speed which companies pay thousands to get it, your welcome for the info

Posted by anonymous on December 19th, 2008

I'm no wizard but i did research where i got my torrents from, find out who uploaded the torrent, find out what there home site is, not the torrent site and download directly from them.
I have done nothing in the way of tweaking and constantly get between 100 and 300 download speed avg around 200. Movie 700Mb ready to watch in around 1 to 2 hours.

Posted by anonymous on December 22nd, 2008

i can download fastly without your methods

Posted by anonymous on January 01st, 2009

and I now likes to seed more.

Posted by frost on January 07th, 2009

256kbps is only 25.6KBps

It takes 1000 kilobits to make 1 KiloByte I would say you are about on track.

Posted by david on January 07th, 2009

Good point, I do recommend getting peer guardian myself.

Posted by anonymous on January 13th, 2009

wait.. but how do i put it on the 1.5 ratio??

Posted by anonymous on January 16th, 2009

Hi, I have 2MB of download speed on my DSL yet I'm only downloading at less than 10KB and I don't know why. I'm using utorrent 1.8.1 and limewire pro but no change. I could use some advicehappy.gif.

Posted by anonymous on January 19th, 2009

I'm guessing alot of people on the comments page (not all but alot) don't have their ports open. Go to portforward.com and they will walk you through it. Second if you use to dl faster than you are now after a format or you reinstalled utorrent, yes your ports are still open but utorrent changes what port it uses when its reinstalled to just change the port either on your router or just do it on utorrent. anyway hope that helps I'm by no means an expert lol

Posted by anonymous on January 19th, 2009

WOW!!!! I just posted the above comment, and I went just to give the uploading thing a try, and oh my god,I set upload to like 200 or something and my dl went from 100 to 600 instantly on one file, with similar increases on all the others. lol I didn't think it mattered thanks friend

I am downloading a torrent, there are 233 seeders, I am connected to none (I got upto 30). Why is this? I am just left seeding (although I have only completed 20%).

It is very slow (average 2kb/s - at 4B/s now), and sometimes just don't move. I have a ratio of 1.185, I am on Azureus.

How can I get these seeders to seed to me?

Posted by anonymous on May 19th, 2009

Seriously, just try this guys method first, I really does work.

Posted by anonymous on May 23rd, 2009

thanks!! i didn't even know how to seed to other people, i'm gonna start doing that! lol

Posted by anonymous on June 04th, 2009

this works. i have downloaded several times and have seeded them for a few hours.

on my 512Kbps DSL, i got from 800KBps to 3.3MB/s download speed! neat :-)

Hey vik_james
you need to follow the instructions above as is,

of course, you should have seeders seeding it. Make sure you have good connection too.

just make sure your ratio is 1.5 and then decrease the upload speed to 10KBs, then your download speed will improve at least 50Kbps

Posted by anonymous on December 01st, 2009

I get around 382kbp/s and with your method I jumped to about 600 kbp/s so thank you so much I will direct anything like this to your website it helped a lot.

btw i use utorrent on mac

Posted by anonymous on March 30th, 2010

WOW. Before this I didn't even know what seeding was. 0.021 ratio !!!

Posted by anonymous on April 05th, 2010

I NEVER seed. I have no need to. I'm sorry.

I live in China and trackers cannot enforce upload/download ratios here as the GFW of China blocked their nosy probing.

All my torrents run at max download speed even though my upload is disabled !
My Utorrent Ratio is even more offensive to you than this message.

I guess it is a small bonus for living under an internet repressive Government.

Posted by anonymous on April 09th, 2010

^^ pissed my pants laughing ^^

Posted by anonymous on April 12th, 2010

uTorrent does not keep track of ratios. However, the faster you upload, the faster you will download as is managed by the trackers. Be careful, though... do not set your upload speed to max, or your connection will get "choked." Set it to 5-10 k below your effective upload speed (not your ISP's stated upload speed. Go to speedtest to see your true upload speed. Your ratios may be tracked by the trackers who can block your IP if you don't seed enough, but that depends o their policy. Whatever, easy enough to change your IP. BUT, seeding is a good thing. Helps keep the community alive. Beware of the legal issues, though. Your ISP can track what you are uploading, and your IP is transparent in BitTorrent to any movie / record execs that want to pursue a lawsuit.

Damn how can u be so stu[id and other 50 people , no , uTorrent dose not have anything , what uTorrent does it has a very large potency to cache hdd , that why utorrent has the best download speed , But This comes whit a defect also , if u use windos 7 or vista ur pc WILL WORK VERY SLOW , becouse of this ,i have quad core 1,6 9800 gt ,4 G of ram geil ultra ddr2 and a wester sata 2 on a gigabyte , and belive me if i use uTorrent my pc is very slow , this dose not happen whit any other programs, the best choise is bitcomet very useful not very huge speed , i download whit max 4000 kb/s , 4 me its more that wnought , :d

Posted by anonymous on April 18th, 2010

How Do I SEed? I have downloaded an 8GB file but how do i seed it??The Computer can be on overnight.

Posted by anonymous on April 29th, 2010

@apr 17 post: Are you a moron? We're talking about download speeds. Not the speed of your lame computer.

@apr 18 post: Just open the torrent and it will seed automatically (will show as 100% complete)

Posted by anonymous on May 04th, 2010

I don't know what these fruit loops are talking about, I think what you had to say is BRILLIANT! I had my upload speed set to 3 kb/s and my download speed set at 0 (unlimited) almost everything I download, downloads relatively fast. I ran in to a speed bump tonight and had a torrent that was downloading at 20-40 kb/s and some times less than that. I'm honestly used to 750 kb/s to 1.5 mb/s. So I decided, just for the hell of it, I'll set my upload speed to 0...And guess what...1.3 mb/s and 4 minutes later, my torrent is downloaded and I'm off to watch my show....thanks!

Posted by anonymous on May 05th, 2010

that's so great.it works well.thanks for accurate explanation.

Posted by anonymous on May 08th, 2010

@ april 30th : way to flame his computer. that's just so rising above it.

anyway, i'm gettin a bit frustrated, i'm only gettin downloads off people with like 0.8% of my damn file, and there's tons on with 100%, but it's not selecting them to download from.
i'm not requesting, i know why and i'll explain it incase some1 else comes with the same problem. sadly those 100% are well over 500 miles away probably and the ping is most likely awefull. it happens. he point of this thread was more morality. share, it's how torrents started. you share more, so will other people, and chances are gonna be higher that the guy next door has the film you want. it's simple internet physics, there's no magic or exclusive rules for torrents, it's p2p. share the wealth.

Posted by anonymous on May 25th, 2010

please dude say me the real trick to increase utorrent download speed plsss send to my email id nikhilreddy9394@gmail.com thanksssssss in advance

Posted by anonymous on June 03rd, 2010

Internal log ? i doubt it. Most of the IP's are not static but dynamic. The more seeders, the faster your torrent download will be. 300kbyte/sec is low.
Good guide in general.
Get a rapidshare premium account and a fast ISP and you will download between 2.5Megabyte and 25Megabyte per sec. Yes megabyte and not megabit.

Posted by anonymous on June 09th, 2010

hey thanks this has made my download a little faster. peace

Posted by anonymous on June 14th, 2010

I agree about Rapidshare. Rapidshare SHITS on Torrents!! For Rapidshare, you don't have to even worry about seeders for your download speed! I download files at like 1mb a sec. The article maker is talking about download a 4gb file in less than 12 hours? lmao I could download that in like 30 mins. Torrents are the past, file sharing sites are the future.

Posted by anonymous on June 21st, 2010

Anyone pls help me my speed is 192kb/s it coming 20kb/s
my email address is srohith29@yaho..com

Posted by anonymous on June 24th, 2010

in response to the guy who was gloating about downloading at 1.1 mbps, hear this: I download at 10 mbps. Average comes to about 4 mbps on a bad day, 12 on a good day. So, stop being an asshole. Slow download speeds affect a lot of people, so there's no need for you to boast. Remember this: There's always a bigger badass.

Posted by anonymous on July 18th, 2010

Thanks for the article. Where do you all get your torrents from? I like SUMOTorrent.com - it's fast & reliable since 2007.

Posted by anonymous on July 23rd, 2010

i get a 5.2 mb/s download
yea
