Soundtrack: "(Get A) Grip (On Yourself) by the Stranglers

I'm in a band now. I'm going to be playing "percussion", which they told me is anything I can get my hands on that I can hit. They also told me I'll be screaming a lot, which is fine by me because I need to get the aggression out somehow.
My little friend Steve (who looks like a 19-year old, short, not-as-scruffy Thurston Moore) is in the band, along with two guys who I don't really know. I'll meet them today at our first practice.
"Can you be in a band?" Steve asked me on Sunday night.
"Yeah! I'd love to be in a band!"
"Great."
"Thanks for asking me," I said.
"Oh...by the way, we have a show on the 19th in St. Louis."
"WHAT???!!!!?????"
"Don't worry. We're very avant-garde. All you have to do is hit stuff and scream."
"Oh. Okay." This is going to be interesting.
Today in film class we got our second assignment. We had to pair up with someone from class. Great. A "partner" project. I thought I was done with this shit in high school.
Not that I mind working with other people, becasue I don't. In fact, I think artistic collaboration is a great thing. I have to meet more people on campus anyway, I'm tired of eating lunch by myself and staring at my walls. However, when you're painfully shy like me, asking someone to be your partner is worse than getting a root canal. Especially when the class is filled with guys. Guys who don't think you're a serious film student because you're a girl and you're weird because you wear lots of dark colors and have tattoos.
Enter film partner. We'll just leave his name at that, okay?
Film partner is older than the rest of the kids, like me. Film partner is articulate and literate and has studied philosophy and psychology. Film partner would rather see movies like "Elephant" or "In America" than crap like "Torque".
Film partner is also extremely handsome, and I was secretly hoping that he'd ask me to be his partner. Actually, I had wanted to ask him if he wanted to be my partner, but he beat me to it. I was washing out my coffee cup in the drinking fountain, and he came up to me and asked if I wanted to be his partner for this project.
I tried to contain my excitement and out-of-control hormones as I shrugged my shoulders and said, "yeah, that'd be cool".
Kudos to you, film partner! I won't let you down, I promise.

Soundtrack: "Beat On the Brat" by the Ramones

Last night I went to a punk show. It was my first night out in Carbondale. I saw a friend their from my history of film class, and we watched the Copyrights play. They rocked and knocked my socks off! Loud, hard, fast punk with a Riverdales/Ramones twist to it, and no jibber-jabber in between songs. If they ever come to your town, check them out. In the words of Ferris Bueller, "it is so choice". wink.gif

Snow Day

Soundtrack: "My Noise" by Superchunk

I should have stayed in bed this morning!
Last night it was a bit chilly out (chilly for me is 35 degrees, I'm from Chicago, remember?) and I went to the Steak 'n Shake down the street, where I drank about five pots of coffee and admired the cute indie-rock waiter-boy there as he hustled about. Oh yeah, I also read a chapter in my philosophy book (that's the real reason I went there-lately, I've been having trouble reading and staying awake without the aid of coffee). There wasn't a flake of snow on the ground.
When I woke up this morning and was listening to NPR's "Morning Edition" to get my current event fix for the day, I looked out the window and saw that it had snowed about five inches overnight. Great. Time to break out the mock motorcycle boots.
Snow doesn't really bug me. In fact, I kind of like it. It brings out the kid in me, and it makes me want to sled and throw snowballs at unsuspecting passerby. This was different, however. I had a long walk across a huge campus, a class to get to, and five inches of snow to wade through. I am damn glad that I brought my motorcycle boots, however. Those things came in handy.
When I reached the communications building (after almost falling on my face twice), my Film teacher came into the classroom and announced that there was no class this morning. In fact, the university wasn't officially opening up for business until 9:30. I could have stayed in bed until 10:00 this morning! So now, I'm just sitting around, waiting for my philosophy class to begin. At least it's Thursday, and the weekend is right around the corner.
