NETILAT YADAYIM Shacharit Tefillah Shacharit comes from the word: Shachar meaning Morning By Rabbi Aminadav Ben Avraham Hinton Are you aware that Yeshua never spoke against Netilat Yadayim, thou many people think he spoke against it. They are completely incorrect, If they would but read Matthew 15.1-20/ Mark 7.1-23 they would identify that it says: These Pharisees and Saducees came and bothered Yeshua for not washing his hands or teaching his Talmidim to wash there hands before eating Lechem (Bread). What Yeshua was directly speaking against was Mayim Achronim thee Teffilot for washing the hands for meal and eating bread. Netilat Yadayim is thee tefillot upon arising, If Yeshua were able to speak against it, he would then speak against the Torah itself. which states The cohen washed there hands and there feet before entering in Yahs presence. Torah :Ex 30.19-21- Ex 40. 31 Tanakh: Job 9.24-32/ Ps 73.13 The problem i see is, people even some leaders teach incorrectly and cause a people to believe such things as contrary to scripture when in fact it isn't. Now even Mayim Achronim can be observed as long it is not observed as being commandment. If one within themselves seeks to wash there hands before eating bread and a meal and chant the Tefillots with it then fine. then they should do so, but if they teach others to do so as a commandment then it ideally goes against what Yeshua was saying and teaching forth the precepts of man as Law (Torah- Mitzvah). Mayim Achronim is not even as far as i have seen listed once in scripture. But washing hands to go in the presence of YHVH is very much so biblical and the scriptures i have given proves it. To demand a people to observe Talmud as if it is Torah or equal to Torah is heresy. Tradition has it's place as our Traditions, Thus if we would but separate Torah from Tradition we would be a far greater witness to a people who don't know what the Torah actually is saying and to leaders who aren't teaching what it is saying. If one can not search the scriptures and see what it is saying historically & hebraicly then a gander of assumptions and bias opinions will be given for the answer to scripture. SHACHARIT TRANSLTIRATED HEBREW TEFILLAH When a traditionally observant Jew rises in the morning, the first thing he says is. Hasten, show love, For the time has come, and show us grace as in days of old. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE REASON FOR NETILAT YADAYIM (Hand washing) Why do we Jews ritually wash our hands when we awake. Jewish thought says during the night, our souls ascend to the heavenly realms where they recharge, drawing renewed energy, strength, invigoration for the following day. At this time, our bodies remain with only the lowest soul powers- those that control our mechanical functions, such as the digestive and respiratory systems. The spiritual vacuum that ensues allow forces of impurity to cleave to the body. When we awaken in the morning we ritually wash our hands to remove the last remaining vestige of those foreign influences. Realistically we are always unclean and washing our hands is but a type of teshuvah of sin that has taken place in the body outside of our own influences in the intrusiveness of inner level sleep. When our nature is yet alert to the condition of the effects of our humanity, dreams- images-anger-sadness-evil conjured imaginations bring forth patterns of inner spiritual conflict between the kodeshim of the soul. Hashem returns our souls to our bodies every morning. The reason? There is a specific mission we have to accomplish today,We were given another day to serve YHVH-Yeshua. In this way, we are similar to the cohen who is about to serve in the Beit'Ha'Mikdash. Just as the cohen were required to wash their own hands before service to God. So, too- we wash our hands before beginning our days service to work or whatever it is that we must do. The Rabbis say chances are that during the night, that our hands have touched areas of the bodies which are normally covered, or our thoughts and dreams as said were unclean with the bitterness of anger, lust, hatred, vengeance, so we are required to wash our hands before reciting the morning blessings. I say it is the perfect time in the washing to make repentance to Yeshua of sins of commission and omission. The Rabbis say that your table is the Alter. The place where the Netilat Yadayim and basin sits itself. And you are the high priest ( Cohen Ha'Gadol ). That preparation of washing the hands, we are to be sure that they are clean and free of anything that would obstruct the waters from reaching the entire surface of our hands. This is a spiritual experience, water- mayim is foundational to Judaism. Water for the hands, Water for conversion, Water before eating a meal. The Rabbis say you are to remove your rings before entering your hands in the water of Netilat Yadayim unless you never remove them, in which case they are considered part of your hand. As you pour three times the water on both hands make sure the water covers your entire hand until the wrist bone is completely covered. Separate your fingers slightly to allow the water in between them. Rabbi Chisda says: Fill your hands with water and God will fill them with his goodness. After washing, lift your hands chest high and say. Blessed are you, Yah our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us concerning the washing of the hands. The Tefillot in Hebrew has already been given. Say this blessing only if you intent to eat more than two ounces of bread says the Rabbis. Rub your hands together and then dry them. Be careful not to speak or get in anything else. A Hasidic Jew named: Eliezer Wenger says: When one awakens in the morning, one must immediately recognize and appreciate the kindness God has done with them. Not only has Yah returned the soul which has been entrusted to him the night before, He's returned the soul refreshed and rejuvenated, unlike the tired and weary soul which had been given over the previous night. Hence, while still in bed, even before he washes his hands, He says: Modeh Ani- I offer thanks to you... Since the Modeh Ani does not contain God's name, One is permitted to say it before washing their hands. By saying Medeh Ani immediately awakening. He will realize that God- Yah. Is in his midst and will immediately get out of bed and prepare himself for the service of God. Through work, relationship etc. When saying the Modeh Ani in the morning, one must make sure to make a slight pause between the words: Bechemlah, Within me, and Rabah, Your Faithfulness. Many have the custom not to touch their clothes or walk even four cubits from their bed. To be able to do this, Many prepare including myself on the side of their beds water in the pitcher and basin prior to retiring for the night. Prior to washing ones hands in the morning one should not touch the following with his hands: Mouth- Eyes- Nose- Ears- or any other part of the body which has openings. -Neither should one touch food or drink and clothing. Chabad states: Women in particular must be careful in regard to touching food prior to washing their hands, since they handle most of the food at home. I do not personally believe a woman should be apart of Netilat Yadayim at all, because the scripture grants us with every example that men only could wash there hands. I believe Yeshua performed Netilat Yadayim before breaking challah with his Talmidim for Shabbat. Likewise, one must be very cautious not to dip his fingers inadvertently into the water he will be using for the washing of their hands, because by dipping the unwashed fingers into the water he has made the water unclean and unfit for washing. Rabbi Menachem Posner says: Is it necessary to wash ones hands prior to the daily prayers? And how about before studying Torah? During the course of the day, chances are that our hands have touched area of our bodies that are normally covered. Such as having to use the restroom. After touching such areas, after scratching your hair, we are required to wash our hands, Before we begin to daven we are required to wash our hands. This applies to all three of the daily daven. If one had used the restroom or are aware of the fact that your hand have wandered to any of the afore mentioned areas, then you must wash your hands before prayer. The Rabbis say: If one must find a distance of eighteen minutes to find water, If you have used the bathroom or not since you've last washed your hands and you don't recall touching covered areas or scratching your head, then still wash your hands- but only if water is readily available. if water is unavailable then you should simply wipe your hands on a cloth or any other available substance. Today we have alcohol gels that can be bought at the dollar store to assure out hands are clean if water is unavailable before davening or studying Torah. A Jew named Elisha Greenbaum states under the title: Obsessive Compulsive Netilat Yadaym The First thing in the morning we do is wash our hands, The Netilat Yadayim before prayer theres a quick trip to the tap if one doesn't have a pitcher and basin. Eating bread demands a full production replete with towels and prayers, and after we finish eating we rinse our finger tips for the “ Mayim Achronim” unlike people suffering from full blown neurosis, our passion is for spirituality ,not cleanliness. We read that the cohen were assigned to serve in the Temple were enjoined to wash their hands and feet every single time they would enter the sanctuary or begin a new act of service. True cleanliness is next to G-dliness, but this was an act of holiness, not Hygiene. By this ritual washing the cohanim were simultaneously accomplishing two objectives; they demonstrated the importance with which they viewed the ritual they were about to perform; investing the forth coming act with a sense of ceremony and purpose and they were spiritually cleansing themselves as well. Just as tevilah in a mikvah is an act of rebirth and consecration, so too, to a lesser degree, is the ceremony of washing the hands. In an effort to emulate the cohen and bring holiness into our daily lives,we too wash our hands before engaging in devotion. Rabbi Moshe Ben Nachman under the title: Cleansing the spiritual worlds- Kabbalah version. Kabbalah elevates the supernal worlds. Adapted from Rabbi Dr. Charles Chavels annotated translation of Rambans commentary of the Torah. We do not believe in Kabbalah, Some of the teachings are foundational to Judaism. We do not adhere to the practices of Kabbalah. Just wanted to make that clear! And Aharon and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet from it. (The Laver) Shemot-Exodus 30.19. This washing was out of reverence for him who is on high; for whoever approaches the kings table to serve, or to touch the portion of the kings food and of the wine which he drinks washes his hands, because hands are busy. People touch unclean things automatically. In addition. He prescribed here the washing of feet because the cohen performed the service in the Temple barefooted( Did you no that!). And there are some people who have impurities and dirt on their feet. By way of the truth the mystic teachings of the kabbala state: There parts of the body had to be washed because the extremities of the persons body are his hands and feet, for when the hands are upraised they are higher than the rest of the body, and the feet are the lowest point. They allude in the human form to the ten emanations, with the whole body between them, just as the Rabbis have said in Sefer Yetzira. He made a covenant with him. ( Avraham) between the ten fingers of his hands and the ten fingers of his feet, with the protrusive part of the tongue and with the protrusive part of the nakedness. Therefore the ministers of the one of High were commanded to wash their hands and feet, this washing being for the sake of holiness. Thus Onkelos translated” To wash in the Greek. More importantly translated in Hebrew. L'rochtza in the verse given means: “ To sanctify ( L'Kiddush)” the same as we do,when partaking in Kiddush for Shabbat, All these are types of sanctifying of consecrated matter. It is on the basis of the ideal of this commandment ( Mitzvah) that our Rabbis have instituted the washing of hands before prayer, in order that one should direct ones thoughts to this separation. Just as in the uplifting of hands by the Cohanim when blessing the people. Birkat Kohanim( Aaronic Benediction ) Numbers 6. 24-26 I find it more important that this washing as listed is biblical far more than a granting of the Rabbis.
