david Facebook Like Button is Relationship Marketing Jul 29th, 2010 8:01:08 pm - Subscribe
The 'Like Button' on Facebook is Social Marketing at it's best. I believe the industry call's it Relationship Marketing. Some of us have fallen into that hole more than others. Need a shovel?

    Facebook Like Button

I was looking over all of the Facebook Likes I have, some were suggested to me, others I added based on the fact of a love for the service, idea, or product. Well, I believe this is Facebook's way of marketing to us socially by using relationship marketing.

    So what is Relationship Marketing?
    quote:
Simply, defined as a form of marketing developed from direct response marketing campaigns which emphasizes customer retention and satisfaction, rather than a dominant focus on sales transactions. - Wikipedia

So what does this mean? Well basically it means that you have a love for something, you hence 'like it'. From their others that are in you're social 'like' circle can now influence you, while at the same time Facebook can market to you by using advertisments.

    If then statement states:
If Facebook User Likes X, Send to Group X, Group Content X is available, Advertisers in that niche group can now advertise the X niche product.

    You're thoughts?

david Rackspace Releases OpenStack Open Source Cloud Platform Jul 19th, 2010 12:40:27 pm - Subscribe
Today I received an email from Rackspace regarding a new service they are releasing called OpenStack.

    OpenStack

So what is OpenStack, simply put it's an open source cloud platform designed to foster the emergence of technology standards and cloud interoperability. In short, we will be opening code on our cloud infrastructure for public use.

    Rackspace:
    quote:
The initial components being released through this project include the code that powers our Cloud Files (available today) and Cloud Servers (expected available late 2010). This project will also incorporate technology provided by other open-source projects. We expect to be joined by leaders in the technology industry and others to drive a deployable totally open cloud solution through this project.

Why are we doing this? Historically, most cloud offerings have been built on proprietary or closed platforms that create lock-in and make migration difficult. With OpenStack, any interested party – including our peers, Solution Partners and customers – will be able to collaborate with us to author, improve and expand OpenStack technologies.

What does this mean for our customers and Solution Partners?

    1. No fear of lock-in
    2. Flexibility in deployment for a highly elastic commodity cloud
    3. A bigger, more robust ecosystem for more tools, better capabilities and a stronger platform
    4. Freedom to decide how you want your cloud

    Microsoft states:

Enabling such rights throughout the Windows 7 lifecycle will make it easier for customers as they plan deployments to Windows 7.

So what does this mean to everyone? Well, since XP is supported a user now has the option of Windows 7 or Windows XP. I cannot imagine using XP unless you have hundrends or if not thousands of productions PC's on it that you manage.

david Firefox Running Slow Says Connecting to Advertisements Jul 6th, 2010 6:01:46 pm - Subscribe
Firefox Running Slow Connecting to Advertisements.I figured I would post this question that a friend sent to me, hoping that it would help others on the net with similar issues. The questions that I received was:

User Question July 6 at 3:18pm
I need a professional opinion. Recently my firefox browser has been running slow as s*it while on the net, while I surf from site to site. At the bottom left where it says "connecting to..." it always gets stuck on ads. Ad.click, ad.biz etc... WTH is wrong with my machine? Ive only had it for a couple of months. Ive researched a little bit and it says most ads run off Java script and apparantly thats not good, and it slows down stuff. Is this normal? Are there some good remedies? Holler.

Ok seems simple enough. Here is a break down of what needs to be done so that hopefully this situation can be resolved. Keep in mind that Firefox has become more of a bloated browser ever since 3.0.

    1. Is your version of Firefox up to date?
    2. Have you tried clearing you're temporary history on Firefox?
    3. Are you running addons on Firefox that could be compromising you're browsing experience? Try disabling all Firefox addons temporally, and clearing you're temp files.
    4. Try another browser such as Internet Explorer or my recommendation Google Chrome to compare if they browser rendering speeds are similar.
    5. Virus scan - Try running a virus scan. It's possible that malware has attached it's self to you're core system32 files. (I am assuming you're on Windows). My recommendation is a free web scan be ESET at ESET Online Antivirus Scanner, or install Microsoft Security Essentials
    6. If you have tried 1 -4 and this issue still persists, I would recommend uninstalling Firefox, and reinstalling.
    7. Possible DNS issues, try contacting you're local ISP (Internet Service Providers), and ask if their DNS services have been updated. DNS (Domain Name Servers) work basically like a phone book, it is up to ISP to have these entries updated as frequently as possible.

I am more than sure that the reason Firefox is Running Slow and says connecting to those advertisements is because of the issues above. You were recommended to remove javascript. Give Noscript a javascript killer a try. It basically removes JavaScript, Java and Flash unless you add them to you're trusted sites.

    Good luck and happy browsing.

Looking for a new cell phone? Worried about what provider to get, what phone features there are, and finally the monthly costs? Well use Phone Finder a Search Option by Option Search Tool.

I recently stumbled over a Phone Finder Search Tool, called 'Phone Finder', by Phone Scoop.

Start off by choosing your carrier, global availabity, manufacturer, user rating, technology, weight, form factor, platform / OS, battery life, display resolution, display type, antenna, roaming, flashlight, accessibility, alerts, connectivity, contacts, customization, data & network, input, touch screen, memory, messaging, music, photo & video, productivity, software, and voice. Pheew!

Keep in mind that not all of that information needs to be filled checked if you do not care for it. Many of those options are available in the advanced feature list. So I welcome everyone to give it a try. Let me know what you think.

Are you a Google Apps Account User? Well good news if you are. Google Apps Accounts Users will be getting access to all Google Products very soon.

    As stated by Gina Trapani...

    quote:
Google Apps users who want access to all the same products that regular Google Accounts have won't have to wait much longer. An anonymous tipster tells me a Google Trusted Tester program is underway right now, which "transitions" Google Apps accounts to full access to all GOOG products, including Voice, Reader, Buzz, Analytics, and more. Here's the official Help page which includes a visualization of the transition, in the screenshot here. (Here's a PDF, in case they pull access to the link.)

She does state that her only worry is about Google Voice, mainly due to it's got her primary phone number associated with it, and she does not for see an import / export.

I have been looking forward to this transition for sometime now. I always thought that Google Apps Account were for business, and we would never see certain features like blog, voice, buzz, reader, picasa, youtube, orkut, and even the soon to come Google Me.

Well, I'm looking forward to it. Are you a Google Apps Account User?

david Donate to the JMRI Project May 12th, 2010 10:26:35 pm - Subscribe
Here is a big thank you to Bob Jacobsen for spending his time, money, and energy for 6 years fighting in court for open source licenses.

    JMRI Project Logo

    quote:
A long running case of great significance to the legal underpinnings of free and open source/open source software (F/OSS) has just settled on terms favorable to the F/OSS developer. The settlement follows a recent ruling by a U.S. Federal District Court judge that affirmed several key rights of F/OSS developers under existing law.

The result? F/OSS has achieved a significant victory that will provide comfort to developers that their expectations will be satisfied when they contribute code to a software project. This is particularly significant for projects that adopt so-called "restrictive" licenses, such as the GNU General Public License, which are intended to prevent exploitation of the work of community developers for unauthorized commercial purposes.

All as a result of the determination of one model train buff to protect not only his rights, but those of the F/OSS community as well.

    - consortiuminfo.org

So why is this important? Well these open source communities are the 'hobbyist' of thinkers, developers, and testers that believe in a project and make free software available to all of us. Consider donating to the project to assist in the $30,000 dollars of debt that Jacobsen incurred during these 6 years. He taken not only a second, but a third mortgage. (The third is nearly paid off) But finance is still owed on the second.

This entry explains how to Create a (RDP) Remote Desktop Connection Shortcut on Windows 7, XP, & Server 2003.

Nobody likes to type an IP or network address if you do not have to. At work we have so many IP's it's hard to track, whats what.

I personally like to use mRemote to manage network connections, but here is a simple way just to create a remote desktop connection so that all you have to do is double click an icon for remote access.

How to Create a Remote Desktop Connection Shortcut
    • Go to your desktop
    • Right click on it
    • Create new shortcut
    • In the Type the location of the item enter this
    • mstsc.exe /v:192.168.0.111 /w:800 /h:600
    • Be sure to change the 192.168.0.111 to the IP that you wish to connect to remotely
    • Notice the w:800 & h:600 - This is the width and the height of the remote desktop connection window upon double clicking. You can change these values at any time to suit your window.
    • To go full screen with your remote desktop connection shortcut simply remove w:800 /h:600 and replace it with /f

I hope this helps. If you have any tips or tricks on remote desktop connection shortcuts please leave a comment.

david How to Restrict Access To Network Drives in on Windows Dec 28th, 2009 10:01:04 am - Subscribe
Entry explains How To Restrict Access To Network Drives in on Windows. Do you have a shared or public pc that many users use? If so you can restrict them from external network drives using the local group policy.

    (Windows 7 & Vista only)

How To Restrict Access To Network Drives in on Windows
    1. First type gpedit.msc in the search box of the Start Menu and hit Enter.
    2. Now go to User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Windows Explorer. Then on the right side under Setting, double click on Prevent access to drives from My Computer.
    3. Select Enable then under Options from the drop down menu you can restrict a certain drive, a combination of drives, or restrict them all. The main drive you would probably want to restrict is the C:\ drive or which ever lettered drive Windows is installed on. Restricting all drives means they can’t access the CD or DVD drive, and cannot use a flash drive if they need to get files from it. Note: This setting won’t prevent users from using programs that access the local drives.
    4. The restrictions take effect immediately, no restart is required. When a user opens up My Computer they’ll be able to see which drives are listed, but when they try to access a restricted drive, they’ll get the following error message.
    5. Keep in mind that Local Group Policy allows you to customize several settings for how you want to administer your machine. Restricting access to certain drives in addition to other security and access measures, can help keep a shared computer stable and secure.

david How to Organize Digital Photos Like The Professionals Oct 26th, 2009 6:47:27 pm - Subscribe
So we all have hundreds if not thousands of digital photo's on our internal and external hard drives, but the questions is how do we organize them like the pro's do? Here is how I plan on doing it.

How to Organize Digital Photos Like The Professionals
Right now I have an I:\ drive where I store all of my photo's along with other needful items that I do not plan on listing here. Well one of my directories is:

    Pictures

Inside of my pictures directories I have:
  • Photo's
  • PSD's
  • Wallpaper
  • Web

Photo's is what we are looking at in this entry. Well I figured that the easiest way to organize your pictures is by creating a directory. (which I have) that describes the images stored with in it. eg: Halloween 2008 Inside of my Halloween 2008 folder I have pictures of Milani trick-or-treating (my daughter). Well rather than labeling the directory, 'Halloween 2008'...I plan on listing it as:

2008-10-31 - Halloween Windows will recognize the year 2008 first, the month, and final the day and place them in sequential order.

Once you have placed all your pictures in directories, and properly labeled them by year, month, day. It is now time to use your favorite photo management software. Many of the pro's use expression, but personally I enjoy using Adobe Light Room for meta labeling, and Google Picasa for facial remembrance.

Either path you choose to take, Adobe Light Room, Google Picasa, or another 3rd party program always label the directories of the images that you purge from your camera on to your PC.

Here is a list of my primary directories in my Picture folder. Your are more than welcomed to use this as an outline for your digital photo organization.
    1. Animals
    2. Architecture
    3. Environment
    4. Events
    5. Family
    6. Friends
    7. Home
    8. Objects
    9. Office
    10. Screenshots
    11. Travel
    12. Work

Eventually I plan on revamping / optimizing my primary directories by year, but for now this suites me well. Should you have any recommendations or suggestions I welcome you to comment below. Thanks

david How to Make Windows 7 Upgrade a Full Install Oct 25th, 2009 4:57:04 am - Subscribe
Explain on how to create a complete walkthrough on how to make Windows 7 Upgrade a full install. Paul Thurott and a friend over at the SuperSite Blog have worked out how to perform a clean Windows 7 install using the upgrade disc. Come again?

That's right: save $80 and buy the Windows 7 Upgrade disc, because you can use it to perform a clean, full-featured installation.

How to Make Windows 7 Upgrade a Full Install

    1. Perform a clean installation using the Upgrade disc -- this should work without a hitch.
    2. Make sure there are no Windows Updates pending -- if there's an orange shield icon next to the Shutdown button in the Start Menu, that means you need to reboot before attempting the next steps.
    3. Open 'regedit.exe' from the Start Menu -- just type it in there, where it says: Search programs and files. Accept the User Account Control dialogue that pops up to give yourself Windows 7 superpowers.
    4. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/
    5. Change MediaBootInstall from '1' to '0'
    6. Open the Start Menu again and type 'cmd' -- use ctrl+shift+enter to run it as an elevated-permissions user
    7. Finally, type slmgr /rearm -- and press enter.

Your computer will now reboot and run the Activate Windows utility. Type in your product key and you should be good to go.

Resize software by Peter Bone. I use to use this software back in the day. Excellent image software for batch resizing. I am posting this as an entry becouse Geocities is going down permanently on October 25, 2009. So to pay tribute I am posting this for everyone else to enjoy.

    As stated from the website.
Resize allows you to resize images. Reduction is done by pixel averaging, which gives much better quality than sub-sampling. The program allows you to resize a batch of images and also convert to JPEG. This is useful for creating thumbnails for web pages or resizing the frames for animated gifs.

The resizing algorithm produces high quality images because it uses all available information from the source image. Most other image resizing software only use a small amount of information from the source image.
