It was a little treacherous early in the day since the mud had turned to ice over night. I would highly recommend crampons if you go earlier in the day. They recommended 1/3 the time for hte descent and 2/3 of the time for the ascent, but it didn't take us as long to go up, since some of the ice had melted. It was quite steep though and I was quite out of shape.

Very interesting views of the desert and lots of petrified wood. There were some short trails that could be taken through out the forest and nice scenic stops for the desert. I would recommend starting from the dessert side and catch it in the bright sunshine. It was becoming overcast by the time we reached the desert side and the colors didn't quite pop. |
