Ten Tips on How to Live Longer and Happier

Mood: punchy

happy.gif Living a healthy lifestyle does not only mean sweating it out in the treadmill and having salads and tofu for the rest of your life. There are a lot of fun and pleasurable activities that can help you live longer and happier.

1. Drink one or two glasses of red wine a day to help keep your body young. My friend and wine enthusiast, Shaun Olmstead, says that drinking a glass or two of red wine gives him more than just relaxation. He believes that red wine is good medicine. Research shows that red wine is packed with resveratrol, an antioxidant that work to protect your body against the effects of aging.

2. Eat dark chocolates! They contain large amounts of antioxidants that protect your body from aging. Find good quality dark chocolate, learn to appreciate it, and have a bit of it each day. Eating chocolate may lower your blood pressure and cholesterol while providing an energy boost.

3. Start exercising those facial muscles and smile! Smiling is a great way to change your attitude, connect with people and give benefit to your body. Like relaxation, smiling can work to counteract the effects of stress. By forcing ourselves to smile, we "trick" our body into believing that everything is good, thereby reducing stress. Like a switch, smiling can actually change your mood. So put a smile on, even if you don't feel like it, and pretty soon you'll be smiling for real.

4. Have more sex! And don’t raise those eyebrows yet! Sex and touching are found to be essential parts of health. Sex releases an assortment of beneficial chemicals in the body. Sex and touching help us bond with others, strengthen relationships, and increase our own self-worth. Frequent sex may even extend your life by years, I’m not kidding!

5. Relax. Relaxation helps our bodies to rest, heal and function better. By practicing daily relaxation techniques, you can train yourself to turn off your stress and replace it with calm energy. This will improve your blood pressure, heart rate and ability to cope with life's challenges.

6. Make exercise fun. Physical games and sports are a great way to keep both your body and mind healthy. Simple exercise routines are great for maintaining balance, flexibility, endurance and strength. Group games and sports can give your mind a workout as well, as you anticipate other people's actions and how to work together. Find a game and activity that suits your level of physical ability and play often.

7. Get enough sleep. Sleep is an essential body function. Medications, stress, illness and poor sleep habits all can prevent you from getting between 7 and 9 hours a night. The health benefits of sleep include more energy, better immune function, and more.

8. Spend more time with loved ones. Relationships are an important part of health. Not only do strong bonds with other people mean you will have help when you need it, being connected also means protection from loneliness, depression, and mental illness. Spend time cultivating your relationships with friends and family to improve your health and your life.

9. Give your mind a workout by solving puzzles and playing brain games. Mind games are a great way to stay involved and engaged in the world. Games can exercise different parts of your mind and entice your curiosity. If possible, choose social games like chess or bridge that exercise your brain while keeping you connected with others.

10. Have a positive attitude. Research shows that having a positive attitude about aging can add more than seven years to your life. Avoid the cultural push to glorify youth and regret each passing year. Find ways to pleasure in your increasing age and enjoy greater learning, experience, and control in your life.

It is so frustrating when you keep getting sick and can't figure out why. But did you know that the culprit might be your very own hands? There are millions of disease-causing bacteria from hundreds of different species happily residing on your hands!

Hand washing is the single most important step in preventing the spread of diseases. Since your hands come in contact with nearly any bodily fluid that you might have, not to mention other sources of germs, it is extremely important to wash them often. We all use our hands much more frequently than we realize and they come into contact with millions of germs a day.

Knowing how to properly wash your hands is not as easy as many people think. Do you think you wash your hands enough? Are you doing it properly? Below is a step-by-step guide on how to wash your hands effectively so you know that you are minimizing your risk of catching and spreading illnesses.

1. Turn on water, preferably to a warm, comfortable temperature. Hot water is not necessary. You just want to wash away the germs, not necessarily kill them and scald your hands in the process.

2. Use any soap you fancy. Antibacterial soaps have not been proven to be more effective than regular soap.

3. Lather and rub hands together for at least 20 seconds. (My friend, Shaun Olmstead, suggests singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice while lathering to thoroughly get rid of germs).

4. Be sure to wash well between fingers and under nails, you can use a nail brush but it is not necessary.

5. Rinse all soap off your hands.

6. Dry your hands completely using clean hand towels or paper towels. Getting hands completely dry is essential in the hand washing process. Wet hands are more likely than even dirty hands to carry germs.

7. Don’t use your freshly washed hands to turn off the faucet. Remember, you just turned it on with your dirty hands! Use paper towels to turn the faucet off, and then discard the towels in the garbage can.

While a good wash with soap and water is a great idea, remember though that over washing might lead to some unpleasant symptoms, not to mention inflamed and unsightly hands.

Taking care of your ears

Mood: wild

The ear is more than just an organ for hearing. They are in charge of collecting sounds, processing them, and sending sound signals to the brain. It also plays a major role in the sense of balance and body position. Furthermore, the ears also have an effect on facial appearance. Too large, deformed or protruding ears can ruin a beautiful face!

The following are simple tips on how to protect the ears from damage, infection and hearing loss. Unlike other organs, the ears don't ask for much. They don't need to be brushed like teeth or trimmed like toenails. All the ears need is to be washed regularly, so just wash them with soap and water while in the bath or shower. Use a washcloth-covered finger only. Never put anything inside your ear canal, including cotton swabs. Your ear canal is very narrow, and a swab or finger can damage it; they can also cause ear wax to get pushed against the ear drum, which can cause hearing problems.

Avoid blows to the outer ear. If you engage in contact sports like wrestling, boxing or soccer, wear headgear that includes protection for your ears. Repeated blows to the outer ear can result in a condition called cauliflower ear, in which the cartilage of the ear is damaged and the ear becomes deformed. Not even the biggest or most brilliant diamond stud can beautify a deformed earlobe!

Leave ear wax alone. Wax is your ear's way of trapping and eliminating anything foreign that gets into the ear canal. Most people don't need to clean wax out of their ears. If you find you have too much ear wax (it's visible in the ear or it's affecting your hearing), use a few drops of ear wax remover or hydrogen peroxide in the canal. After a few minutes, flush the ear with a rubber bulb and tepid water.

Protect your hearing by avoiding noisy places. My friend Shaun Olmstead didn’t bother to put on earplugs while in a NASCAR racetrack and almost lost his hearing! Other noisy venues to be avoided are firing ranges, rock concerts and construction sites. Any place where you have to shout to be heard should be avoided. If you choose to go anyway, wear earplugs.

See your doctor if you have an earache. Ear infections can damage the ear drum or the bones of the middle ear, causing hearing loss. Your doctor may prescribe medication or order a minor surgical procedure to help you if you suffer from frequent infections.

Be careful with illness and medications. Respiratory illnesses should be treated to avoid their spread to the ears. Certain medications can damage hearing; take only what's prescribed for you and follow the directions carefully. Avoid others who are ill; some illnesses can only be treated with antibiotics that can damage hearing.

Stop smoking. Smokers are more likely to lose their hearing than non-smokers.

See your doctor if you suffer from sudden hearing loss or hear noises in your head (tinnitus). These can be symptoms of a serious illness which needs to be treated.
