| Bus stop trash spot light on these stops this week, Toledo Ohio |
Nov 25th, 2006 10:38:00 pm - Subscribe |
| Well, the trash at the bus stop on Central Ave. just continues to be dumped, week after week after week. Why? No trash can. City's answer to problem, clean up the trash. And the city reports budget problems. So why are we wasting man hours week after week after week to pay someone to go and clean up fast food wrappers when a trash can be placed there and remove the bag once a week and replace the bag. ![]() Another bus stop on Alexis Road is in the spot light now. This is just another reason/example of why we need trash cans at our bus stops. ![]() ![]() Too bad the city leaders don't get it. |

| UGH. Leave them a note saying TRASH CAN NEEDED!!! It would be so simple... when people see a garbage can, they make an effort to put garbage in it. When there's nothing around, it's just more tempting to litter. |

| I appreciate your comment and thoughts and I agree that the solution is such a simple one. For those that are so inclined drop the mayors office an e-mail about the mess at varied bus stops mayor.toledo@toledo.oh.gov |

| The city or the company that places the bus stops there. | ||

| believe me, if the owners of the benches are forced to put trash cans out and empty them, all the benches will disappear. | ||

| So the answer is live with trash at the bus stops? Or do we have pride in where we live and get the city to provide and maintain the cans as the city does now at some selected sites. |

| There are bus stops that should have trash cans, but not every single stop that has a bench or a shelter. Toledo has about 2000 bus stops and a very low percent have a litter problem. Tarta is already short of funds and the bus bench owners do not make a lot of money. Just the repair cost of the benches from spray paint, car accidents, and theft of all the aluminum frames takes a lot of cash. The citys garbage trucks go right by every stop every week. They should empty the few trash cans that are needed. The people of Toledo will be the losers if the city enforces their new law requiring a can at every bench. and that the bench companies empty them. The benches will be gone. Do you think the city will replace them? They don't have the money. | ||

| "The benches will be gone. Do you think the city will replace them? They don't have the money." One problem; the benches are not owned by the city. They are advertising company owned. And we know that the bench owners are not making a lot of money how? |

| People seem to think every biz makes a lot of money. Well they don't. After you subtract city fees and taxes, state taxes, fed taxes, payroll taxes (unemployment workers comp social security medicare )repairs from auto crashes, repairs from kids having a good time destroying things, there is not much left. With about one third of the benches rented out at any one time there is no money to buy the kind of trash cans that would be needed to keep them from being a bigger problem than the litter. About $200.00 to $300.00 each for the cheap ones. Then they would need a truck large enough to carry all the garbage because they are not allowed to use bags. They hold water. They can't use a pick up the garbage will blow all over, and try loading and unloading all that trash by hand. Well I guess we could buy a dump truck (priced those lately?) Oh yea don't forget the dumping fees and higher ins.payments. Have we covered theft yet? The alum. frames and plexiglass are real popular with the thieves. | ||

| So, the answer to trash at the bus stops is no trash cans as they are alleged to be to expensive and the company that advertises on the benches is alleged to be not making a lot of money. What then is the solution? |

| The reason that companies advertise on the benches is that they are affordable for the small biz. The answer to the problem is to get people in to stop littering. You and I both know that will never happen. The bench companie are not doing the littering so why make them pay for it? Why not the carry outs that sell them the stuff they throw on the ground? How about McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys? It came from them. The solution is for the city to put trash cans in the areas that are a problem and they could empty them into the garbage trucks that drive right by them every week. | ||

| "You and I both know that will never happen." I do not agree. There are a vast number of city's, towns, burgh's and so on that have bus stops and the litter is not there. I have traveled quite a bit to different parts of the country and in many there is an effort connect with the people and businesses to help, first cut down the litter and then stop it. "The solution is for the city to put trash cans in the areas that are a problem and they could empty them into the garbage trucks that drive right by them every week." And that is what I have asked over and over and over again and the city refuses to do it. |

| Maybe what is needed is for a small sales tax (1/4%) on carry out food that would be ear marked for litter control. Soft drinks are already taxed but not food. I think that is what San Fran. Ca. does. | ||

| the solution: take care of "your own" trash. that means whoever brought the trash should dispose of it-- properly. Sure seems that people don't have have a problem carrying a heavy load to that distination,(the full bag, the full can of soda, etc.) but surely seem to have a problem disposing of the "light load" the trash,,,hmm... seems as though this could be an attitude problem....what happened to personal responsibility, accountability and shame....that just seemed to have easily disappeared from the equation. Too bad that the trash just doesn't "disappear". I recall very vividly in the early 60's on the way to school, there were ad boards on buildings stating "DON'T BE A LITTERBUG" consequenses--you would be fined) It is quite apparent that City Hall et. al. have much bigger city "trash" problems on the agenda...the trash tax......the ez way to generate "bigger" dollars...the problem from the above pictures, which I am very familiar, i do live in the Deveaux area,,,is that this problem would be difficult to generate $$$. How does the City fine the perpertrators of these actions,,,,conclusion, you don't. This city is beginning to resemble a 3rd world country, how pathetic... |

| lets assume one thing,,,,,,since most of the trash is at the bus stops, assuming that folks are going to ride the bus,,,,how about then, let the rider take the trash aboard the bus,,and disposethe litter on the bus,,,,,a receptacle could be provided on the bus.........case closed......... | ||

| I like the suggestion. Never thought of it. But, would TARTA go along with it. I will put the question to them and see if any answer is forth coming. |

| Interesting enough, the same bus stops, are now a mess that the nice weather is here, sorta like the flowers that bloom in the spring, so does the trash. Newer pictures are in order. |
