A wide range of free partition software is available. Be very careful when using any software application which writes to the partition table, the MBR (Master Boot Record), or the boot sector.
Always backup your hard drive completely before using any free partition software. If you lose data, you have no one to blame but yourself.

EaseUs Partition Manager
EaseUs Partition Manager is a powerful hard disk partitioning tool.
Partition Manager can create, copy, and resize primary and extended partitions. It includes a command line interface and a simulation mode that works with large files so that you can safely experiment before working on the real hard drive partition tables.
Partition Saving
Partition Saving is an MS-DOS based partition backup and recovery program. Partition Saving can copy a partition to a file.
Partition Saving is intelligent enough to copy only occupied sectors to the file, if the partition is FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS or ext2.
Partition Saving is also able to compress data in the partition and split it into several files. This is especially useful when saving hard drive partitions to CD's or DVD's.
Partition Image
Partition Image is a Linux/Unix utility which saves partitions to an image file. The image file can be compressed to save disk space, and split into multiple files to be copied on removable media.
Partition Image will only copy data from the used portions of the partition. For speed and efficiency, free blocks are not written to the image file.
Partition Image supports ext2fs/ext3fs, ReiserFS, FAT16/32, HPFS, JFS and XFS.
SystemRescueCd
SystemRescueCd is a Linux system on a bootable CD-ROM for repairing your system and your data after a crash.
SystemRescueCd also aims to provide an easy way to carry out administrative tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk.
SystemRescueCd contains a lot of system utilities (parted, partimage, fstools, ...) and basic ones (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It aims to be very easy to use: just boot from the CD-ROM, and you can do everything.
The kernel of the system supports ext2/ext3, ReiserFS, XFS, JFS, VFAT, NTFS, ISO9660, Samba and NFS.
eXtended FDisk
eXtended FDisk, or short XFDisk, is a free DOS FDISK replacement that offers more comfort and comes with a boot manager that allows you to have more than one operating system installed on your hard disk.
With XFDisk you can partition your hard disk or install and configure the boot manager, which will be located in the first 17 sectors of your first hard disk. The boot manager will not occupy a partition, so you can fully use the four available primary partitions per hard disk. If you choose to have an extended partition with logical drives on your hard disk, XFDisk transparently manages the extended partition for you.
XFDisk and the boot manager support more than one hard disk and even booting from logical drives.

Resize partition under windows vista

In Windows Vista, it’s very easy to change the size of the partition or resize partition by using EASEUS Partition Manager, which also provides ability to change drive letters or paths.
Partitions with NTFS, FAT32 or FAT file system can be resized with the Disk Management utility. And unlike Windows XP or Windows 2000, there is no third-party application program such as Partition Magic needed. EASEUS Partition Manager can resize the partitions without any data loss or the need to delete and remove the existing partition and recreate the partition with new size.To resize partition size or change the size of partitions in Windows Vista:
Click on the Start button, and then right click on Computer and select Manage.
In the Computer Management console, click and expand Storage branch, and click on Disk Management to open and access EASEUS Partition Manager.
EASEUS Partition Manager display the details of all available volumes and disk drives in the computer configuration in the right pane.
Right click on any volume or partition that needs to resize or change the size, and select either Expand (to increase the size) or Shrink (to reduce the size) to change the size of the partition.
Enter amount of space to expand or shrink in MB (cannot exceed the size of available expand or shrink space in MB).
Click on Expand or Shrink button when done.
Windows Vista will reduce or extend the size of the partition online immediately, without the risk of data loss.

A utility for hard drive organization from Symantec Corporation, Cupertino, CA www.symantec.com.that allows disk partitions to be changed on the fly without destroying existing data. By making multiple smaller drives out of a large one, their cluster sizes are lowered and waste less space.
Officially called "Norton PartitionMagic," this highly praised product runs in Windows and supports FAT (DOS, Windows 95, 98 and ME), NTFS (Windows NT, 2000, XP) and EXT 2/3 (Linux) File Systems. Without a product like this, the DOS Fdisk utility is used to repartition a hard disk, and all data are lost in the process. PartitionMagic was originally introduced in 1995 by PowerQuest Corporation, Orem, UT, a company acquired by Symantec in 2003. See partition.
PartitionMagic is a computer program for hard disk drive partitioning originally made by the PowerQuest corporation but now owned by Symantec. The program runs on Microsoft Windows operating systems or from a bootable CD-ROM and enables creation and modification of partitions. Existing partitions can be resized without loss of data.
Details
PartitionMagic is capable of resizing NTFS or FAT (16 or 32) partitions without data loss, and can copy and move partitions, including to other disks. It also has various other features, including being able to convert between FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS, modify the cluster size of FAT16/32 and NTFS filesystems, and merge adjacent FAT or NTFS filesystems (all without data loss, though some NTFS-only metadata is lost on conversion to FAT). Additionally, it has somewhat limited support for ext2 and ext3 partitions.
Partition Magic releases through 3 were offered both in OS/2 and Windows versions. Symantec's Partition Magic version 8 only supports Windows.
Future versions
PartitionMagic, while under PowerQuest, was updated regularly, adding new and useful features. Since Symantec purchased the application, there has not yet been a new release, and Symantec has stated that it has no plans on releasing a new version.
Compatibility issues
PartitionMagic is compatible with Windows NT, 98, ME, 2000, and XP desktop editions.
When run on a server edition it displays a dialog box reading "PartitionMagic cannot run on Windows NT/2000/.NET Server.".
It fails to run under Windows Vista. When launched, with a Windows Vista partition present, even from another version of Windows, Partition Magic displays the following error: "Init failed: Error 117. Partition's drive letter cannot be identified."
