Let's see. I'm 31 as of about a week ago. And I have Wilson's Disease, which has taken away about the last seven years of my life. It's a genetic disorder in which the body can't rid itself of copper. It builds up in the liver and bloodstream and, eventually, poisons the brain. The symptoms mimic depression, schizophrenia, and parkinson's disease all rolled into one, but it's all reversible. Right now, I'm down to just having shaky hands and being a little nuts. I'm currently taking half the minimum therapeutic dose of an antipsychotic, which seems to be enough to keep me sane. I have to lower it three more times to be off it completely, which I hope will happen by the start of 2008. After that, it's back to school to finish up my degree and maybe move on to graduate school. |
