Roman Catholicism lost its awesome state power after the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. Napoleon Bonaparte abrogated all Papal States, and the Lateran Treaty of 1929 made the Vatican City the seat of the smallest independent city-state in the world.

Still, the Catholic Church has not competely lost its state influence. As a state, known as the Holy See, it is an observer state in the United Nations. People of Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, Latin America, former Spanish colonies in Asia are dominantly Catholic. A solid 1.2 B population bloc in the world is a political force to reckon with.
