Philosopher Walter Kaufmann says morality should be not based on religion. He argues that for ages religious institutions had widows burned in their husband's funeral pyres, heretics drowned in boiled oil, slaves treated as animals.
In fact, however, morality has been and still is largely based on religion. Morality is social mores defined by particular cultures of a people-- Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, etc. Heritage sites like the pyramids, Bolubudor, old Hispanic churches are seen as cultural legacies, forgetting slave labor which built them.
