Discovered Nag Hammadi Gospels show a great diversity of beliefs about Jesus at the turn of the 1-2,000 CE. These are reflections of Gentile Christians who have embraced the faith in the post-apostolic era.
The Gospel of Mary gives prominence to Mary as a close companion of the religious teacher. The Da Vinci Code suggests an intimate relationship, supported by newly uncovered texts. If I were a preacher, I could dwell on Mary's anointing Jesus' feet with rich perfume, as an archetype of the mystical relations between Jesus and the Church.
But for more radical thinkers, the incident was a wedding ceremony.
