My first marathon (3rd & final part)

The prize for finishing the marathon was a T-Shirt, a great feeling of achievement & a cool medal. To win the prizes you have to register and follow the marked course. Naturally, the prize isn't given to everyone who starts the marathon - you have to reach the finish line. My time was 3 hours, 52 minutes, 44 seconds.

The Bible talks about the prize that awaits those who have faith in Jesus Christ. St Paul writes, "And now the prize awaits me - the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing." I urge you to accept Jesus as your Saviour and you will receive the prize of eternal life.

I'm sure my marathon was more successful because I followed good advice. Not having run a marathon before, I bought some books by experienced marathoners. I recommend 'Run Your First Marathon' by Grete Waitz & Gloria Averbuch (Skyhorse Publishing). They told me how to train. I wasn't really fit when I started training in January but because I followed good advice I was able to run 42.195 km!

Life is also more successful when you follow good advice. The best selling book of all time and the book that most people throughout history have turned to for guidance is the Bible. The reason it's so helpful is it was inspired by God. It's an essential guide to a successful life.

My first marathon (part 1)

Mood: encouraged

In August I ran my first marathon. It was the Chevron City to Surf in Perth, Western Australia. In some ways I think life is like a marathon:
>Running a marathon is hard work! I felt really good for the first 10 kilometres. But for the rest of the marathon I had sore legs, especially when the hills began at the halfway point. By the last hill it was a struggle to keep running (in fact I walked for a couple of minutes).
>Life is also hard work. Although life is great a lot of the time, we all face struggles now and then. It's during the hard times that I'm especially glad that God is with me. God makes a fantastic promise to those who put their faith in him: "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5)

>One big reason I that I successfully completed the marathon wast that I ran with hundreds of other people. And there were dozens of other people handing out drinks along the way. (Thanks to all the volunteers and the Chevron City to Surf organisers!)
>Life is also better when it is shared with a group. The biggest - and in my opinion best - group is the family of God. You enter God's family by putting all your trust in God's Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says "God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die." (John 3:16)
>In the marathon I found that simply seeing others running alongside me, encouraged me not to give up but to keep running. Likewise as I share live with other Christians, they encourage me to keep on going when life gets hard. God intended for us to be part of his community, the Church, where we can share life's ups and downs. In the Church we spur each other on to love, good deeds, and towards our ultimate goal of eternal life with God.

What a marvellous win in the Tour de France by Cadel Evans! It's inspiring to see how he narrowed the gap in the final Alps stage - despite some bike trouble. A courageous comeback win!

Next month I will run my first Marathon at the Perth City to Surf. I know Cadel's victory will provide some inspiration for me.

My football team the Busselton Bombers also had a win today. We scored 6.15.51 to beat Bunbury 6.9.45. This means we will be second going into the finals.

DreamHost reviewClaire and I have received new appointements. As of January we will be Corps Officers at Busselton, Western Australia. We are looking forward to this new challenge. We are moving from a Tasmanian beachside town to a Western Australian beachside town. From all reports Busselton is a wonderful place (as is Dodges Ferry).

Twenty years ago I was a 13 year old in country South Australia, preparing to go on a big adventure with my family. My parents had been appointed as Corps Officers at Alice Springs. I loved living in Alice Springs, where we were for 4 years.

As we prepare to move to Busselton, it is also a big adventure. We have never been to Western Australia. We are looking forward to serving Jesus in the Busselton community and corps. We also hope it will be a good place to live for our two sons.

On we march with the Blood & the Fire!
