Mars Was Wet

Dec 6th, 2004 6:48:31 am - Subscribe

From the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's website:

The most dramatic findings so far from NASA's twin Mars rovers [Spirit and Opportunity] -- telltale evidence for a wet and possibly habitable environment in the arid planet's past -- passed rigorous scientific scrutiny for publication in a major research journal.

Although the findings do not mean that Mars was covered with liquid water like Earth, it does mean that there might have been enough water to support life.

Also, the article states that the rovers are still in great shape, going far and beyond the original goals of the mission.

Lycans on the Moon
A movie based upon Joe Casey's graphic novel Full Moon Fever is getting under way. The film will be produced Adrian Askarieh and Daniel Alter.

The graphic novel tackles this scenario: what happens when you put werewolves on the moon? They are always in their lycan form, of course.

Genesis Update

Oct 5th, 2004 3:52:43 am - Subscribe

When Genesis slammed into the Utah ground on September 8th, there wasn't a lot of optimism about the state of the samples the probe brought back. However, by September 23rd, the first scientific samples from Genesis were shipped from a specially constructed "cleanroom" at the U.S. Army Proving Ground in Dugway, Utah.

As of now, the Genesis team is showing a great deal of optimism about the recovery of samples. In a press release, Genesis Project Manager Don Sweetnam said, "If you had told me September 8 that we would be ready to move Genesis samples to Houston within the month I would have replied, 'no way.' But here we are, with an opportunity to fulfill our major science objectives. It is a great day for Genesis, and I expect many more to come."

Recovered from the wreckage:
Four separate segments of the concentrator target used to measure the isotopic ratios of oxygen and nitrogen. They contain the most important samples of the Genesis mission.

The gold foil collector, which is expected to contain almost a million billion atoms of solar wind. According to a September 30th press realease, it "was considered the number two priority for science recovery."
