On real human beings.

I just had the most heavenly nap today.. funny enough it was while rushing to catch a train to iiu..

Watched the West Wing with Logan last Tuesday.. (I am so crazy about that show. Such a freak.) and there was a scene where Toby finds out that his brother (who is an astronaut) is stuck in space because of some problem and Toby feels like a pile of dung because he forgot that his brother was up there.

There were also scenes that implied that he wasnt talking to his brother anymore.

Was attacked by a wave of guilt..

I currently have two siblings who I am on non-speaking terms with.

It would be easy if life was a show on tv.. fractured relationships are pieced back together amidst hugs and touching background music.

Its easy for people to tell me to pick up the phone and call them.. but they cannot fathom the amount of pain that I feel even when I hear their names. There is a Malay proverb that says "air dicincang tidak akan putus".. or "water slashed will not be torn apart".. a metaphor of relationships between siblings.

It is supposed to be unbreakable. I have disproved that theory. My question is can you put the pieces back together?

There is this Dove campaign going on right now.. which is real cool. Its about celebrating real beauty, beauty that isnt starved, airbrushed or impossible.

I think its time we boycotted labels that perpetuate this craziness. Its simply sick. Normal looking people are supposed to feel ugly for.. well.. looking normal, while people who look like they have never ever eaten cake in their lives.. are supposed to represent the beauty of humanity.

One day its going to be just impossible to satisfy the "standard of beauty". You will have to be morbidly obese.. with tiny tweety bird ankles.. and a wandering eye.

Lets kill those damned fashion "people" before this happens. Or make them commit suicide by slipping weight gaining powder in their 2% milk lattes.

Or I'll just get a rolled up fashion magazine and whack those skinny bastards to death.

I have to admit.. it is reverse discrimination if you look at it that way. The message that I wanted to get through was that "eating" is something that we should celebrate. Hence chunky woman contrasted with skinny woman.

I dont think that the super skinny woman is the result of her metabolism rate.. its not the case for all models either. Some just DONT EAT.. you can see a lot of celebrities who used to be normal-sized (lindsay lohan, teri hatcher) are now just plain stick-like, they systematically starve themselves.

And I have no problems with a woman who is skinny.. nor do I encourage obesity that can lead to health problems.. but I am against this fad that tells women to hate themselves for being a few kilos overweight.. to constantly judge their self worth by how much they weigh.

Its about trying to set out an image of beauty that is impossible for some.. attainable only by starvation.. The naturally skinny should not be force fed to add weight to them.. Its about celebrating different body shapes.. and understanding that beauty does not only come in one size.

On lobbying to companies.. I dont think that its useless. The "campaign for real beauty" was done because of market demand and "dove" is a company selling beauty products. It might be a marketing fad, yes, but at least its a fad with a healthy message. Companies do listen to their buyers..

When you have "vanity fair" ditching photos of scarlett johansenn because it "was not interesting enough" because she apparently had "flesh".. they are not necessarily doing something because they think people want it.. they are out there in the market to influence people and to set standards.

Women are at fault for being gullible anough to buy into this.. but the ones who arent hypnotized simply cant just sit on our toes and blame them while watching them slowly waste away.

If we cant change the magazines then we can lend our support to magazines and media that do ascribe to a healthy vision of beauty.

Women reject their own bodies and hate themselves for a myriad of reasons.. different between each woman.. its the family.. abuse.. bad relationship experiences.. it comes down to the idea that to be loved i must be beautiful.. and to be beautiful.. I shall look at the beauty magazines and follow their lead.. they seem to know what theyre doing.

We cant reach out to every individual.. and help their problems.. but we can try to neutralize one of the contributing factors of an unhealthy body image.. standards set up by an influential industry.
