A letter from your officers pt 1 & pt 2

Hey team,

Hope all of you guys who went to the race had a great time. For those of you who did not go, we hope that you guys can join us in our fun adventures next time!

After this race, we are all very excited and look forward to the Long Beach race, a bigger event with stronger competition! We understand that we might not have placed for the sprints races, but that should in no way discourage us, being the UCLA Dboat team that we are. After all, it wasn’t like our two tough weeks of double practices did not pay off. The amount of improvement we've had since that first Sunday practice to this recent weekend is ridiculous. We still represented our team well, we showed our spirit, we competed, we made Julia hella giddy with our great UCLA start, and we made David jizz in his pants with a great race. Even though we did not get medals, our hard work did not go to waste. To see how far this crew has come with just 2 weekends of practice and how well we ran that start on race day is to realize that we are still UCLA Dragon Boat-- one of the top crews with the fastest start-- and nothing less.

Remember how disappointed we were on the Saturday practice before the sprints and compare it to how well we came together on race day. We raced in the open final with the only 7 girls on the lake and we stayed in front with an exploding start. In both the A final and open final, we stayed with the competition and did not settle for less. In the end, we placed where we deserved to be placed. Not getting hardware this time simply means that we need to work harder next time. We definitely have a better understanding of our strengths and weaknesses, and we know better what we need to train. We definitely see a lot of potential in the crew we have right now and have no doubt that this crew can carry the team to great accomplishments, as long as we work together for it.

Even though we are very confident in our ability and our UCLA Dboat-ness, others might not know what to expect from us come next year. This crew will be responsible for showing them that we are still the same team, with the same philosophies, training just as hard as before. We need to prove ourselves worthy of the name “UCLA Dboat,” because we are in no way a rebuilding of the UCLA team. We ARE the UCLA team. We are building off everything the team has gone through, successes and failures, ever since the first day this team was formed by our beloved Godfather. Let's continue that exponential improvement and not let our failures get in the way of our desires. UCLA Dboat has always had the underdog mentality, understanding that no respect can be gained before earned. From Derrick's crew, who had to wait long before tasting the sweetness of a gold medal... to Will's crew, who managed to stay on top for almost an entire year... UCLA Dboat has always been the hungriest team out there. This crew should not be any different. Let’s carry out the UCLA Dboat tradition with pride. Let’s look at this weekend as motivation for the upcoming race. Look at it for the hunger that drives us for more. When we hit that first heat in Long Beach, we'll show them how much we really want it.

US Dragonboat Team- U23 division

Jul 8th, 2009 8:18:27 pm - Subscribe

Here is some more encouragement for anyone on the fence about it from Will Lin, a LARD paddler and UCLA alum. I strongly recommend anyone who can go to go. Some of my friends and UCLA Dboat alumni were on the US team several years ago and they have said it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Some of you have traveled abroad to race as well so maybe you can share your experiences. It would be a shame if they have to cancel this team b/c of not enough commitment. Contact willlin82@gmail.com if you're interested.

"I'm not sure how well the word was spread, but this year the IDBF is introducing a new category of racing along with Junior (under 1cool.gif, Premier (all ages), Senior (40+), Grandmaster (60+). The category will be called U23 (18-23), for paddlers coming out of Junior, but not quite strong enough to contend for a Premier spot. The US is trying to send a team. Right now there are roughly 15 confirmed paddlers.

Here's my take on all this: I've been paddling long enough to realize it gets boring beating up and getting beaten on by the same teams year after year. We all live in a very small paddling world. Only a handful of you and the people you know get the opportunity to paddle beyond the borders of California, fewer out of the US and even fewer to world championship level competitions. But there's a whole world of dragonboat out there and it's a shame that people who want to experience it cant. So this U23 team, it might not be the fastest team, but it is a legit opportunity to see competition at it's finest, meet and mesh with paddlers from different backgrounds, and paddle in the last place you thought you ever thought you'd find yourself. I never took dboat seriously until i went to one of these world races. I'd kill to get on the premier boat just to be part of the race. You guys are the future of dragonboat and this is a golden chance to see it in all it's glory.

If any of you or anyone you know are interested. Please let me know. You can email me (willlin82@gmail.com) or just facebook msg me. we'll probably need 5 more to go. have capacity for maybe 9. I'm having Les, one of the team USA coaches, check to make sure it's not too late. We'll probably need to know full commitment in a week. We're going to need a few stars to align, but it's worth a shot.

Costs:
flight ~ $1000
Jerseys Fees ~ $300
Stay ~ $50/nt ~ $300
food/entertainment ~ $400?

roughly 2K total
...checking to see if we can get a little bit of sponsorship for this. wont be much, but I'm sure anything would help.

Dates:
Practice Aug 23rd - 25th
Race Aug 26th - 30th
Jersey trading and Partying when you're done"
