I would guess that my sunburn is pretty bad, but there hasn't been any blisters that I can tell. For some reason, I bunt on my back and stomach and a little bit of my arms despite lathering up with sunblock. My feet have red sandal bars, and my shins are slightly red. I also burnt my nipples. According to the graphics program, I went from about a hex color #9C8F89 to 956163.

As for pain, about a half hour before getting out of the river, my back stated bothering me, a raw sensation, I thought was due to the tube. After getting out of the water, it was an intense burning feeling, just like... well, getting burnt. Searching for 'pain' on my blog, will bring up the time I burnt my hand on the pizza pan. My back felt like that. Throbbing burning pain. At the time I didn't even realize anything else was burnt. I had nothing to put on it so I just clenched my teeth, and tried to think of 'no pain,' which doesn't really work. I guess eventually I got used to it, or else my mind was taken off it by other things. It still hurt but I started to ignore it. I think the reason it was so much pain is, in addition to sunburn, I also had tube burn. It was raw from rubbing against rubber for 6 hours. But then how did it burn...

Skip to the ride home. I was really tired so I started falling asleep, but my back felt so hot, that I would wake up. It wasn't so much the stinging anymore 2 hours later, just hot. Leaning back against the seat was almost unbearable.

The cold shower felt pretty good, but the water pressure was too much. Towel drying hurt. Now my stomach area was starting to hurt.

Trying to sleep was like trying to sleep on nails. The only comfortable position was sitting cross-legged on the floor. Unfortunately, I can't sleep that way. Applying pressure to the front or back was about as bad as when I first noticed the pain. It was hot, stinging, and like I was on fire. eventually I was so tired, I managed to fall asleep, but I could only sleep a couple hours at a time. For some reason, it didn't occur to me to take an aspirin, which apparently I should have, but I put aloe gel on it which provide about 10 minutes of release.

In the morning I was slightly better or else used to it. My feet really hurt though. Slowly through out the day, the pain gets replaced by itchiness. Though if I scratch, I get a burning sensation again.

I read that I should take a cool but not cold bath, so I did and that helped me feel a lot better, plus I took some aspirin and Tylenol.

Now the weird. Some of the places there are just lines of burnt, less than 1cm wide, some speckles. It looks more like scrapes, but I didn't do anything to get scraped. Also upon inspecting my back, I discovered the mole I had since I was a wee-little-one, no longer looks like a mole. It's bubbled up and red and looks like melanoma. I think I better get that checked out. I'm not sure the burn did it, but it brought it to my attention anyway.

And therein lies the description of the first day of being sunburnt. It's annoying because I hate being sunburt, and made sure to generously apply lotion. Next time, if there is a next time, it's going to be a shirt.

Pain is pretty much gone unless I scrape or scratch it. Mostly now it is itchy. Some places are fading back to my old color, especially on the back. About a 3rd of the area that was red is no longer red on my back, leading me to believe that it is mostly burn from the rubber tube. My mole is turning brown again, but considering that every time a doctor sees it, they say I should in the future check it out, I guess I will. I've been taking aspirin and applying aloe juice on th burns. Last night sleeping wasn't a problem as I fell asleep pretty much when I hit the bed.

So, much less pain, itchy, and less hot sensations.

Itchy, scratchy... Hungry.

If you've played Resident Evil 1, you would get that.

No pain unless I scratch. Then it actually does hurt. Other than that it's just itchy. My back feels a little rough. My mole is brown. Some red is turning to tanned. My stomach now looks more red than my back. I can take a warm but not hot shower. I had a fever last night. 5 blankets and I was still cold. My feet still have red stripes, but I went running tonight without any problems. I didn't even notice it. Vitamin E mixed with pure aloe juice is what I've been using on the burnt areas.

Soon I plan to go to Guadalupe Mountains National Park to do a multi day backpacking trip. I think I've managed to get in shape and I've got everything I need except for food.

Normally I would just pack those, 'just add boiling water meals', but I have to carry all the water and water is heavy. 8lbs a gallon. I'm already planning to carry at least 2.5 gallons for drinking, so it starts to get heavy. I'm thinking about just bringing .75 gallons for every day since when hiking, I have never used more and usually around a half. It's a nice safety net, though, to have the extra.

So I have to find something light that is filling, loaded with calories, and doesn't need water. Tasty is good too. If I leave my stove behind, I can save a pound on it and the gas and I could probably leave behind utensils and cookware, saving some more weight.

Ok and now it is time to test an image from flickr.

I appears to work. It's a picture from Big Bend National Park. It's Casa Grande taken from Casa Grande by me.

wade Where to go? Aug 7th, 2005 7:59:12 am - Subscribe
I can't decide where to go and how. For sure I want to do the Bush Mountain trail to Bush Mountain peak. I would stay the night at that campsite as well. Then I could keep going the next day to the Marcus camp, a place I want to go because of it's unpopularity and isolation. Plus then I can hike to New Mexico. Then I would like to go to Dog Canyon and refill water and continue to the Mescalero camp. Finally go to Hunters peak and down the Bear Canyon Trail. That is the ideal path I want to take. Day 1, 6.2 miles; day 2, 8.3 miles; day 3 , 8.8 miles; and day 4, 9.2 miles. All tough day hikes. And that means carrying 3 gallons of water or 24lbs, which means my pack would be over 50 pounds. So much for lite packing. I'm tempted to ditch the tent and sleep in a bivy made of trash bags. It will most likely rain.

In comparison, Guadalupe Peak is 8.4 miles round trip and difficult. But I've done it twice in poor shape with bad shoes. The next day I feel like not moving.

The alternative would be to go on 2 separate trips and skip the Marcus/Dog Canyon area. Decisions, decisions.

Yeah, I think I figured it out. Skip the stove and gas, half a gallon for cooking, and just bring dried food or non water. That's minus 5 pounds. If I skip the tent, that's another minus 6. That would bring me down probably under 40lbs. I'm really considering it. Trash bags. yeah. But then I have to get a mosquito net. And people are going nuts and are inconsiderate in Walmart for the 'back-to-school' stuff. Too bad there isn't a real sports store in this place.

But I didn't decide where to go
