Wipe out

I wiped out on my bike yesterday. It was quite strange how it happened so I will describe it.

I had been riding for about an hour over the various trails I normally go on. I had to detour a couple of times due to the rain leftovers, but it wasn't nearly as bad as Friday. I was about to finish up and was almost to the end of my riding time. It was very rocky along this part of the trail, but I've gone here several times. It's actually pretty uncomfortable because of all the bumpiness. Due to the mud though, I was tired and going slower than normal. It was actually extremely slow. I was almost stopped, started to pedal a little harder and all of a sudden I find myself going over the handlebars. I landed on my right arm on a sharp limestone rock.

I got some scrapes there and a cut on the edge of my elbow. My knees are scraped also. But worst I had a nasty looking lump about 4 inches towards my wrist from my elbow. I tested it and it would move back and forth. That's good. I also felt the bone to try to see if I could feel any fractures. It feels whole. I'm pretty sure I didn't hurt anything too bad, but there is an ugly bruise where the lump was. The lump is now gone. My right arm still is sore and hurts when I lean on it.

I am not sure exactly what happened, but I have a theory. As I go regularly through this area, I go pretty fast, so I'm bouncing and bumping along with no problems. It's uncomfortable, but it never occurred to me that i would go head over the handlebars. When I was going very slow, I came upon one of the rocks that stick out about 4-6 inches. Since I was going very slow, when the front wheel came in contact, there was none or very low upward momentum. It was like I just rode into a wall. The front wheel being stopped, but still with forward momentum, the back wheel could only go forward. I did too. The position of the bike at the end was the front wheel facing forward but the rest of the bike facing opposite of where I was going.

This was a first for me. Though, I have wiped out many times since I first learned to ride, I had never gone over the handlebars. It sucks.
