Has there even been talk of building curling sheets anywhere in Whistler? It seems like a logical addition to me and I wondered whether it's ever been explored. If it hasn't, surely it should be considered for the new arena?? It would add an attraction for tourists and would also provide a place for locals to have a fun, inexpensive night out in the dead season. Lastly I think it would add some true canadian culture... you can't curl in Vail, that's for sure!

What do other bloggers think of this idea?

Now that is a useful idea, how about making sure our new arena has suitable ice? Might then actually be a little less of a white ice elephant.

Meadow Paks was set up for curling one spring. Never caught on.

'One Spring:'
It would take more than that. and not competing for 5.20am ice time too.

I haven't curled since high school. I'd be into it. Not on a powder day, of course, but I think it would be a nice alternative to playing squash or going to a bar.

Put the curling rink in the Larco space.

Curling Ice would not give payback for years, not until we could get tournaments, and for that you need seats. Probably not possible in the Larco space. On the other hand, in time, and given enough effort, it will pay back in visitors, publicity etc. At the very least, if we build the paralympic arena it should be capable of containing international curling Ice. Only makes sense, dunnit?

In 1988 APC reviewed a proposal by a developer to build a curling rink on what is now known as the Kerfoot property. I was not supported because it didn't make sense (in our minds at the time) to place an amenity like an ice sheet on waterfront land. Ironic.
