Thanks Duane for doing this. I first ran for council in 1984 when computers were still gigantic and the internet was the stuff of science fiction. The electorate is as engaged now as it was then (one of the things I love about this place) and I'm looking forward to the discussion during and after this campaign. Nancy

It is nice to have someone with Nancy's skill set and knowledge stepping up
Thank you Nancy

I am worried about Nancy’s thinking. How can we have affordability without retail competition? Nancy is clear on her position against London Drugs. I believe that the majority of Whistler residents support London Drugs, and increased retail competition.
I trust the idealistic views of candidates will not trump the will of the majority of Whistler residents.

I was also surprised that Nancy opposed the Olympics. Our fore-fathers built Whistler to host the winter games.

Thanks for your comment but you have mis-stated my position on London Drugs. I love London Drugs and how can any thinking person be opposed to retail competition (!). I do not support big box retail in the Village. Simple as that. If the London Drugs types were about affordability for locals they would locate their big store in Function.

About the Olympics, I was skeptical about them particularly with no guarantee about "financial tools" and boundary expansion. The point is we're hosting them now and we have to ensure that we do a darn good job doing so.

The IGA and Nesters Market are both much bigger than the proposed London Drugs store, yet they are not referred to as big box. Big Box usually refers to stores over 50,000 sq feet. Not 15,000. Our tourists complain about high prices and poor shopping, according to Tourism Whistler surveys. Tourism Whistler is marketing “value” now. Our visitors may well appreciate competitive pricing as much as our residents.

Tourists do not come to Whistler to shop in the Gap and London Drugs, that may be why they complain about the shopping. The uniqueness of the local shops will be lost if we continue to concede to these chains coming in and making it too difficult for small business owners to compete. What about the 'value' of originality?

Thanks nancy, and to a certain extent I agree, especially with a hope that LD could go to function, of course I know there's no reality in that!

Still, Breckenridge here in Colordao has some chain stores that have fit very well into the scene-scape and historical facade. Granted no big box stores though. Telluride is a shining star in the "no chain store land", but they host not even a third of Whistler's visitors. Ultimately I think that retail in Whistler is a much bigger conversation than simply London Drugs. I looked into a small restaurant space and the landlord wanted $8000/mth for less than 1500sq/ft!

Nancy, I think that you are well prepared and wish you the best of luck!

There's a rumour going around that if Ted gets elected and so do I that I will quit. Of course that makes no sense as I declared my candidacy long after Ted did so knew there was a possibility we could be sitting at the same table. Let me be clear - I have worked with 3 different mayors on 3 different councils and can work with anyone. What I did say is that I will not be a member of a council that proposes to do something unethical and if it ever came to that and if I could not dissuade the majority, I would have no choice but to make an issue of it by resigning.

It be wonderful if we got a mayor and a few council members, like Nancy, who come with integrity and intelligence as part of their skill set.

I don't know how many people are still reading this blog but I want to let you know that I appreciate your confidence in me and it is, quite frankly, humbling. The feeling in the room last night at the GLC was absolutely electric. There's a palpable feeling of optomism. So let's keep it going. I want to keep the engagement of the community going over the next three years. And we can do it with regular community meetings, municipal task forces, regular communication with the press. Please, please, please don't hesitate to call me to let me know what you're thinking, what your issues are. Thank you again for your support. Nancy Wilhelm-Morden

Well, we are still highly engaged, congratulations Nancy we elected you because you are smart and community minded. On that note, please do something about employee housing, I'm not talking about building it but managing it. Too many people are buying and renting it out. They see it as a cash cow. Buy a 3 bdr for 270 000 and rent it out for $1800mo. With a 10% down payment it is quite the return. These people then buy property elsewhere and laugh at the whole scenario. It is appaling as are those that have bought E.H. then gone on to the free market and not sold their unit. It is appalling how many of 19 Mile and Spring Creek are rental units. Can something be done retroactively to prevent this abuse. Thank you, good luck

C.J.
