Pique Review:

Council candidate Sonya McCarthy also rallied support from the crowd in a passionate speech that included her long list of community activities.

"I’m up here for Whistler," she said. "I’m running for council because I really care."

Why should you vote for Sonya? Because she understands!

1. Why are you running for council?

I really care what happens to Whistler, it is my home. I know that the people of Whistler want to have their opinions heard by council.

2. What are the biggest issues facing Whistler?

Employee housing and affordability. We are losing our long-term locals to Pemberton and Squamish because it is too expensive to live here.

3. What needs to be done to address those issues?

We have to address these issues or lose our spirit! How I would deal with this is that historically developers paid $6,000 in lieu instead of building an actual employee unit. This practice should be eliminated or the price increased to reflect the actual cost of building an employee unit. If both market and employee housing are both zoned on a site then the developer should be required to finish the employee housing.

Sonya McCarthy gets things done. She's a woman of action and has the gift of consensus building that Whistler so desperately needs right now. Vote for Sonya to bring the fun back to our community. Vote for Sonya to get our house back in order so we can move forward into the Olympic era with our heads held high.

The Question review:

Sonya understands the issues ...

... Sonya McCarthy, candidate for Council, on what she thinks of the cash-in-lieu proviso for developers instead of having them build staff housing: “Cash in lieu is cash down the loo, because it doesn’t allow us to actually build housing.”

An active and participatory Council is overdue ... at a great cost to our community. Vote for Sonya to get things done.

Pique review:
I have lived here for 25 years and have served on the boards of 22 local organizations. I am known as a life long volunteer and an exceptional fundraiser. I was elected to council in 1986. I was voted Citizen of the Year in 1991. I work very hard. I do my homework. I get the job done. I am a good listener and I would like to be the voice of the average citizen at municipal hall. I really care about Whistler. Let’s bring the fun back!

Sonya McCarthy:
As a Representative of the Community and as a council member I must be fair and without prejudice and look at all sides of this Question. If London Drugs wants to occupy this space, they must provide housing for their employees and contribute funds to recreation for recreation.

Sonya's name just keeps coming at me in the last week.
I have researched and have decided to give her one of my 4 council votes.

Sonya McCarthy, in my humble opinion, is by far the best candidate for council. Her extensive local volunteer efforts span every aspect of our community, and total more than all of the other candidates combined! Anyone who earns a CITIZEN OF THE YEAR award, and then chooses to honour our community by running for council will always receive my vote.

Chris Manuel,
Whistler since '89
