Back in the day, we'd get periodic influxes of useless newbies onto Usenet. First, we used to
say "must be September again", because they were mostly students. Then, it was AOL, and it was
relentless. We'd make fun of their tendency to quote an entire thread of text without trimming
it, adding only the phrase "ME TOO!!!!". Many of us ran off to private email lists. (In fact,
on one mailing list I'm on, if someone says AOL, it is taken to mean "...and include me as
well, please.")
Every new group tends to take a big stinky dump on the social mores of the established clique.
Its how they gain turf.
(Ironically, its now the 30-40 year olds scaring the kids off Myspace. Somehow that just
tickles me...)

members on yelp. Perhaps based on number of reviews? Number of USEFUL votes as opposed to
funny or cool which can always go to nonsensical ones?
Jane- Here's what I learned. Write reviews, have your tastes, opinions, writing styles etc, be
known and then make your entrance on to the talk threads, where an established community, that
has inevitably got its own inside jokes, answered certain questions a million times, etc.
exists. It makes the hazing easier, and also lets the yelp world know you aren't a troll. If
that's your concern anyway.

jane, if you are indeed real, you'll have to understand that over the last week (especially)
there have been a number of trolls who have started threads similar to the one you started. it
makes people suspicious. i'd encourage you not to get combatitive, but instead to understand
where it's coming from and give it time, keep writing reviews, participate constructively in
some of the 'useful' threads (if you can find any today). you'll quickly feel at home.

reincarnation of one of the trolls. look through the talk threads over the past week - trolls
(which are EXTREMELY different than genuine new members) have been particularly bad lately.
why don't you take some time to read reviews on the places you like, find some reviewers that
you like and rate their reviews and send them compliments? i'm sure you'll make many more
friends that way and you'll be more warmly embraced into the community.

I think the mistake new people are making is that they jump into Talk without understanding the
tone, culture or mores of the group.
You wouldn't walk up to a group of people at a bar and just start blathering away. If you
wanted to join the conversation, you'd listen for a bit and then comment on the current
conversation with an understanding of 1) what they were talking about, 2) what type of people
they are and 3) how to interact with them in a pleasant way.
Personally, I wrote a few reviews, read the postings on Talk, then posted a couple of
responses, AND then created my own thread. I knew the community b/c I'd been observing it for
a bit, so if someone said something that I found upsetting I was able to determine if they
really were being an ass or if one of us just misinterpreted the intent of the other one's
post.
It takes more time and thought, but in real life that's how things generally work anyway.
Oh and trolls aren't defined by not having a picture or reviews - trolls are people who jump in
and stir shit up just to cause drama and then act like they didn't. It doesn't matter if they
have 50 pictures of themselves, their real name and 5000 reviews.

SF is more of 'everything' than any other city just for the sheer amount of activity. Check
the Talk lists - the threads turn over with new responses almost evey minute.
You gotta take the good with the bad, yeah there will be some trolls and bad ju-ju, but you'll
also get a livelier time w/ SF Talk than other cities.

I generally write my reviews in Word for just such a problem (oh, and b/c it auto-spell checks
which I really, really need). I know it means I'm completely Type A and dorky, but I'm a long
winded and slow reviewer, so it works for me.

It's just the way it works. But please don't think long-standing members are also exempt from

But to be serious for a second....I also totally agree with Hannala. When I first got on Yelp,
I wrote a bunch of reviews, then discovered Talk, lurked for awhile to see what it was about,
decided I liked it, started leaving comments.
Even so...I got into a major public argument about 2 weeks later, basically I said some shit
that was funny to me but offensive to others. It's easy to forget that people don't know you
and your sense of humor yet. Now I'm friends with the people I argued with, and really....it's
just the Internet, it's not that serious. You also realize that you can have a big fight with
someone, and it's all forgotten a couple days later.

cindy made a very good point in the other thread. it seems that yelp has really cracked down on
these fake profiles - that one was only up a couple of hours. and when it started to attract
negative attention, the yelp tech people took notice and did some sort of IP address matching
program (i am making this shit up because i know nothing about technology). and that's why
'she' got deleted so quickly - 'she' was a known troll. i can't see yelp deleting a legitimate
profile so quickly

Also, she does say that she still had a huge disagreement with someone in the beginning. It
