A Man's China Trip 2009/10/10-18 Beijing - Emperor's House This was and is an emperor' house of China, used to be lived by 24 emperors in the history and latter occupied by god-like Mao, and dominated by the communist party today. without a doubt, I saw royalty, bureaucrat and privilege everywhere in this capital of China tour. The Forbidden City right in middle of the city is the best symbol. Golden roof color and rose red wall color always remind of political games, Golden - being powerful and rich when one in a favored position, while Red meaning something else, painful bleeding when he got lost. I spent 1 whole week searching the city, and my tour guide Gary from Free In China Tour Service became my best friend there. During those days, Gary was never tired of my stupid questions and glad to share his knowledge and passion with me. Without him my week-long sightseeing would be worthless. Thank god, I did a customized tour, otherwise I could never have seen so much. 2009/10/18-21 Xian - Tomb of History This is a dusty city, where thousand year old treasures are covered by thousand year thick dust. Candy, my tour guide told me you can call xian either a city of history and culture or a city of tombs and secrets. I began to feel sorry for chinese students. I can't imagine how big their history books are for containing 5-thousand-year-long history? So happy to be an American! The world-known terra-cotta soldiers and horses museum was absolute a highlight during my China travel. The largest-scaled underground army were standing at their attention right in front of my eyes. Their faces are different, uniforms are different, hairstyles are different, their expressions and even fingernails are different. Each vivid detail is telling a story. You do need a guide, a Good guide tour, and don't hesitate to ask questions, otherwise you will be at a loss when you walk out the museum. Ye, special thanks to the driver, I forget his chinese name though. It was not at all easy in that dusty place to have a shining car everyday. I didn't rent a car and drive by myself because I didn't know how to drive in the "hell". Car fare was a great deal through free-in-china.cn, 100 Dollars for a whole day use with driver service. 2009/10/21-24 Guilin - A scroll of chinese painting "Many don't believe those beautiful but strange shaped landscapes on the chinese paintings truly exist until they travel to Guilin. " said Vivian, the prettiest guide during my stay in china sent by Free In China. She pointed at the picture printed on a Chinese 20 yuan note with pride. The Li river scenery is on it. Famous for it's clear water, numerous hills, fantastic caves and strange rocks, Li river claims the No.1 in China. But I loved fishing birds and water buffaloes playing in the river better. The pace in Guilin was slow and relaxing. A paradise for China vacation. I indulged myself in the picturesque hills and rivers, and in the evenings Vivian took me to the food street for all kinds of local snacks. I still recalled the snakes in the wine bottles. After that we checked out many popular pubs. To my surprise, pubs there were totally different with these here in the States. Tips: The hotel I stayed has a waterfall show every night. Millions tons of water pouring down from the top the hotel washed the entire wall of glass windows. 2009/10/24-28 Shanghai - The second "Big Apple" New yorkers say: "If you love someone, bring him to New York, if you hate someone, bring him to New York too." Now you have an new alternative, to bring him to shanghai! Shanghai was utterly beyond my understanding of a "Socialism Country". It has everything you can find in a "Capitalism Country". Then I hated I was still a student who didn't have enough money in the pocket. Bred was the driver and guide contracted by freeinchina. He drove me around the city, and uncovered all faces of his city. This city is full of strong contrasts, shining tall skyscrapers and dusty mega construction sites, extremely expensive condos and classic Art Deco architectures, overwhelming advertisement and overhead hanging laundries, first-class name brands' shops and dirty street side pink-neoned massage rooms... The traffic was screwed and painstaking because there were over 200 constructions going on at same time for a better city image before the next world EXPO. What a Paradise and Hell for adventurers! |
